Sri Maharshi’s reply to question
Ask yourself “to whom do these doubts, fears and worries occur? And they will
vanish. Cease to pay attention to them. Pay attention to the Self within. Fears etc
can only arise when there are two or when anybody else exists apart from or outside
you. If you turn the mind inwards towards the Self, fears etc will disappear. If you try
to remove a doubt or fear, another doubt or fear will arise. There will be no end of it.
The best method to annihilate them is to ask “to whom do they occur/” and they will
disappear. Destroying a tree by plucking its leaves one by one is impossible, other
leaves will grow by the time you pluck a few Remove the root of the tree – the ego
and the whole tree with its leaves and branches will be destroyed. Prevention is
better than cure.
First find out whether the ego exists, who is depressed by these thoughts. Find out
how you got the idea of the body. Solve this problem for your ego then see if
anything remains to be solved.
You may read whichever book you like. Self (Atma) is the real book. You can look
into it whenever you like. Nobody can take it away. It is always at hand to be read.
Hold on to your self in your spare time also and then you can read any book.
Suggestive replies such as Shivoham etc to the enquiry are not to be given to the
mind during meditation. The true answer will come by itself. Any answer the ego may
give cannot be correct. These affirmation or autosuggestions may be of help to those
who follow other methods but not in this method of enquiry. If you go on asking the
reply will come. The method of enquiry is Dhyana and effortless state is Jnana.

Life is short and way too long
Be ye Traveler quick and smart
Keep your aim quite fresh in heart
And the way will itself become short
Mishaps and troubles His blessings best
Take them all with hope and joy
He is all Love and mercy great
Waiting to meet all at the gate
Pack up Pack up with haste in mind
And speed on like a mad man friend
Looking neither hither nor thither
To lay thee thyself at His feet
With blessings from a sincere one
Do I remain ever all yours
A Seeker of Him who dwells in Cave
Purush and Uttam who feels for all

have left me naked to mine enemies

Swami Purushottamananda
Tulasi Maharaj, the light of my light , the life of my life and without whom I am not
only zero but minus something else to such a Lord of mine all I had some 15 years
ago had the audacity to write in clear words like this “ all false , I shall not rest
satisfied unless and until I come face to face with the Truth and what is Truth ?
It is that which exists always, which has neither beginning nor end, which is always
on the same state without the decrease or increase and which cannot admit of
anything else with it or in other words which is one without a second.
We can think of one thing only at one time. Numberless objects come to our mind
and likewise vanish. These are not truth because they are coming and going. They
are unreal.
There cannot be any image or picture without a solid wall behind , so these thought
forms call it real or unreal as you like for the time being cannot appear of themselves
without something quite stable at the back. This stability at the back we know if we
use our intelligence,- has no change at all, is ever existing, is never affected by time,

2

place or causation and is the witness of all our daily routines. It sees what we are
doing when we are wide awake , it sees what we are doing in the dream and it
unfailingly records the state of our sleep also.

Our creation begins with a fresh morning and we preserve it until we fall asleep only
to annihilate all these and these. These are our so called creations, preservations
and destruction. These states we know are changing but we have come to know that
there is one thing besides it which is the witness and so not subject to any change.
So much our own individuality this is true as regards the vast universe too, for what
is true of the qualities of one drop of water is rue of the expansive ocean as well. We
are the Pindadam, microcosm and the universe is the bramanandam, the
macrocosm.

And what do we see here in this great universe appearing lasting for some time and
then disappearing or in other words birth, death and preservation.
We are bound to believe in something stable and unchangeable which must be at
the back of all the phenomena. It is this thing that we are going to term as Truth. And
there cannot be two truths. In that case Truth being limited which sounds absurd.
How can be the un-limitable be limited

What I want to bring before your mind is this, that the Truth that runs in and through
all these mental as well as physical phenomena can be one and one only without a
break. (permanent)
This Truth Rishis of old- the great seers have named Sat, Atman, Brahman and the
like.

If the world is running after material objects and wanted to hug them always to their
breast it only goes to prove their ignorance and incompetency to know and judge
things rightly and properly. Nobody will be so foolish as to seek a bride to his son
who is in death bed going to breathe his last in a few minutes

I say the whole universe is on its death bed without considering this fact , how foolish
we are to be so eager and longing to hug everything of it to our dear bosom. But
once we begin to keep the fact written in golden letters always before our eyes, I say
mental eyes, our thirst and hunger for these worthless things begin to decrease and
decrease until we totally discard and boy-cot everything material.
Spiritual life dawns with the aversion of the secular life and reaches its zenith with
the cent percent aversion or discard.

By aversion I am not meaning that we have to hate anything and everything – far
from it- know hate begets hate and this will lead you total mins. (?) Love, Love; but
with prudence and discretion. Give everything its due place , neither more nor less.

What is that you want my friend? If you want to enjoy heavenly bliss then be off from
Hell fire. When you are in the midst of ell fire weeping and crying due to its burning
pain how can you expect to enjoy the Heavenly bliss which is al cooling and pleasant
? Peace i.e Shanti is Heaven and Ashanti is Hell . Hankering for women and gold ,
name and fame – this is Hell . Keeping away from these , not having the least
attachment whatsoever . This is Heaven. Now choose whatever you want. Only
through discrimination we can hope to get something good and substantial . So use
your intellect nicely. If you begin to exercise your intellect in the least manner
possible you are only beginning to see things clearly as they are. Adopting this
process wisely and steadily you are only eliminating all what is material and gaining
more and more hold upon your own Self and nothing in the Universe can check your
victorious march to the kingdom of Heaven which is already in you and all, namely
the Atman.
Know your own Self and you have known all you have come to know Ram, Krishna,
Buddha, Christ, Nanak or Mohamed. You may take them as Avataras still they are
not bodies my friend. They are spirit of the Atma absolute. You too are just the same
thing. Even to know your own Guruji, you have to know yourself first. Guruji, he is not
flesh and bones unless and until you know your Guruji fully well. What right, have
you, to preach the divinity of the Guruji your own self.

Yes, discard Hell and welcome Heaven , if you want to attain the Truth. This is the
initial state. At last what is to discard and what to welcome. You have become the
whole. You have realized your Guru Deva. Now we can sing honestly from our heart
“ Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnuh , Gurur Devo Maheshvarah, Gurureva Param
Brahma , Tasmai Sri Gurave Namaha “ ((Gurur Sakshat) Param Brahma , Tasmai
Sri Gurave Namaha “)
Guru is Brahma, guru is Vishnu, Guru is Siva Himself. Verily Guru is no other than
the highest Brahman. Salutations to the Guru “
Guru is all in all. He is the only object running in the whole universe and helps its
manifestation. Prostration to thee.
May Sri Guru Maharaj who is my own Self. This is perfect Knowledge and it will lead
to everlasting peace and Bliss. While taking Him as separate entity leads to sects
and sectarianism fights and quarrels , unrest and misery , all Hell life. Is it not? The
essential thing required for attainment of Truth is sincerity. Be sincere in your
manners and dealings. You may gain or lose, the world may praise or blame. Care
not. Be sincere.
It is the business of the worldly minded to adopt policy and cunningness , not ours.
We are not to laugh in sleeves, (?) fear not , March on and on and your Sri Guru
Maharaj will take you to goal sure and certain. When the mind becomes quite pure
and entirely purged of all the impurities, the Sacred feet of the Lord shines forth in
your mind and you become free and free without much delay.
You have known the Truth. You have become one with Itself for ever and ever

Talks by Srimat Swami Yatiswaranandaji Maharaj to the devotees Place Math Dated
6-3-59

Swamiji read a few pages from the Eternal Companion

How to practice Japam and Meditation

Inferiority complex of any sort is a great enemy to spiritual progress. The Spiritual
aspirant has to fight against many odds and unless he possesses strength born of
intense consciousness of his noble heritage and supreme destiny he cannot make
much head-away . While pride must be avoided on the one hand because it makes
us rather tipsy and clouds our Vision, a feeling of helplessness and despair , a sense
of smallness and unimportance must also be kept afar. The spiritual aspirant is a
rare man and the consciousness of his being out of the ordinary and the common
place of his being poised high above the trivialities and the narrowness of the every -
day world will give him great Vigour and energy in his march towards the goal. Sri
Krishna says One perchance in thousands of men.

My dear -----,
Glad to receive your letter. If one simply makes the Japa and if the mind cannot
follow it, it will be only a physical business. This does not come under the category of
ordinary mantras. The Pranava is the loftiest of all the mantras. I hope you know the
meaning of “ Om “ It indicates ------------- And the Eternal Truth pervading all these
states is being experienced in the Turiya State as the Witness.
The devotee is taken above all these 3 states where Self alone exists , none else,
none else.

To practice this kind of meditation one must have some qualification. All on a sudden
one cannot get the degree . Begin from he infant class. Meditation is strength,
Meditation is intelligence and Wisdom and the meditation is the best medicine for the
ills of both mind and body. There are three kinds of Tapasya – manasika, Kayika and
Vachika. You can know these from Gita. Do all these things. Work, work for the
purification of the heart- it will give you strength also if done in good spirit. It is all the
mind that matters. You can stand or sit or lie or walk or run. You can go on with your
Japa. This also needs practice. Slow and Steady wins the race. Take Gayatri now
seriously and earnestly. You have seen that book , I suppose. Be regular in your
Japa. Daily have Haven also for 1 / 10 number of what you do Japa. This is very
simple thing and at the same time whole purifying and taking to the light Eternal.

Yes. I love you all. So it is my duty to show you the way most suited to you- you
need not be afraid. Lord is there. Tell Sri that this is my realization.

My dear --------
Your P.C Glad. Yes, Forget , Forget all things else, to merge and merge in Self all
bliss. Be pure and pure. Purity gives you strength and wisdom. Resist and resist all
sorts of temptations material. This all the Spiritual Sadhana one has to practice
With all love
Affly yours
Pursuhottamananda (sign)

--- What is your duty now ? You have say fallen into a deep ditch full of maltles and
thorns . Some how or other you want to get out of it. Is it not? Here all are suffering
because of ignorance only, not knowing their divine nature and heritage . Know
thyself and be free.

When you come to know about the Truth by the grace of Lord you can immediately
solve all the great problems, why He creates this Universe and the like. When you
are in the light where is the darkness ? All darkness gone. So when you are in the
light of Knowledge, all darkness i.e , ignorance vanishes

Try, try and you can get at the Truth. You must have faith and Sradha, Devotion and
Contemplation and control of senses. Only those can reach the Truth, none elese,
none else. Purity, Blessedness, Peace. Lead a very pure life. Lord bless you
Your affly

Love
By Swami Yatiswarananda Maharaj of Sri Ramakrishna Math ( not sure, not
mentioned here, only guessed from the first page of diary, to be confirmed)
Blessed are those that can love. For love is divine and it will sooner or later take him
to the very fountain of love, the Lord
Really speaking there is one and one Love alone and no multifold loves. If we closely
watch the nature of Love without hesitation we can declare that all sorts of love
though appear different as maternal, paternal and fraternal etc come under the head
of Love Divine.
The husband loves the wife. It is for the sake of wife that the husband loves her or
for his own sake. As long as the wife is of some service to him he loves her. But if
she turns against him he not only ceases to love her but also wants to see her in
danger and misfortune. This clearly shows that his love is directed to himself only.

6
copied from diary with red cover

Now you may say that he is loving her body. No, No. he cares a straw for his body.
Have you not seen soldiers gladly plunge into battle and sacrifice their bodies if need
be . Is it not at the risk of their lives that the coaters work in coal mines and enlist
themselves in works of utmost danger. They do all these things in the hope that they
can remain happy with the object that they are in search of. So in reality what they
love is not person or other objects . But it is the enjoyments what is at their “ Heart”
(s). Happiness is the goal of every one and happiness is the true form of Self. So
now you have seen that all the love is directed to the Self only.
Fools are we to waste all our love in wives and children , wealth and dignity and all
things material in the thought that through these only we can be happy. The stream
of water though mighty and full it be if taken through thousands of canals will never
be able to reach the Ocean. So in the case of us also. If our love is scattered in
several objects it can never approach the Ocean of love- the Self
To reach the Self there are several paths. The path of Knowledge or known as
Janana, Karma Yoga and the Path of devotion- love. As the tastes and
temperaments vary in each soul so the paths too are different. The path of love-
they say - of all the paths the easiest. Love is a common factor in every path. Be it
either Yoga or Jnana . But without love it is all dry and they will not be able to take
anyone to the Self.
A boy has no taste (love) in mathematics. If mathematics be his subject he is sure to
fail. Whatever is done with no love is futile indeed. Ashradhdhaya II.
Whatever oblation gift japa or abstinence done with lack of faith and love is of no use
either here and hereafter. So love is all in all. Hence the Superiority of love to every
other path. And love is perfect in itself. It is independent. It wants not the aid of
anything else. On the contrary Yoga and Jnana will be very eager to court her
friendship.
A true devotee will indeed be a Yogi as well as a Jnani.
Moreover almost all the great men of the present day too have realized God mostly
through Bhakthi for example Shankara, Ramanuja, Tulasidas, Kabir, Nanak,
Chaitanya, Rama Tirth etc
And what is the Bhakthi . It is extreme love towards God. Even from the very
beginning it gives some happiness to us just as with every morsel of food we eat. We
feel happy and satisfied. If you ask me what is the most beautiful thing in this world ,
I shall be telling you that love , it is what is most beautiful. Love makes one forget all
the defects of the object it loves and it makes the lover one with the beloved. He
forgets everything else and is possessed of his beloved only.
Everywhere he sees her only and she sees him only. This is only one example to
show the nature of Love. This Love when directed to God is called Bhakti.
Why should we love God. Because we want to become free once for al. As I have
already told you love is our own nature and nobody can remain without loving this
thing or other. But if once the love is spirutualized it can never be false. We shall be
all love and here will be no place in our heart for hate and jealousy. All our
hankerings after material objects cease forever. For through the Love Divine we are
near and near approaching the fountain of bliss the Atman and what need have we
7

with the things mundane however great they may appear in the minds of materialists.
No desire of whatever sort, no anger , no covetousness or avarice , no egoism, no
delusion and no jealousy. The mind is full of love and love divine. No room for
anything else. It is full of brilliant light. Darkness cannot even make a peep into it. All
the differentiations fade away. Radha is within the firm clasp of Krishna. All bodily
ideas vanquish. Neither Radha or Krishna. Bliss and Bliss alone.
Is not a man ‘s walking in truth always that a succession of falls? Tell the truth but
not that which is unpleasant. Tell the pleasant but not that which is untrue (Manu)
Perhaps this Gurus attachment is needed to wash away other attachments. Human
psychology demands it.
True belief is a fact that if one states the Truth, no one can help believing what he
says if only he makes himself understood. Since that which exists is One, It is absurd
to suppose an ultimate contradiction between the human reason and the universe.
Not withdrawn but the transfigured life radiant with power and energy triumphant in
its selflessness is religion.
To your own self be true. Yes but is not the Self of others. (their feelings) Your own
Self
The Self within is the Self without. Yes but the real Self and not the false self induced
by sense slavery, You have not to be true to the false self because it is not true to
itself. It is not logical but psychological accuracy that convinces. It is not the Age of
Reason but the Sage of Faith that carries the day. Logic is simply the surface show.
We cannot know a religion , science , art o person unless we love. Strong ideas
expel weaker ones from the mind. One without a second. It is to this state of Sat Chit
Ananda that the divine love does take a devotee slowly and steadily all along with
ease and comfort. But how to create this divine love in us? This is a hard problem.
Associate with the blessed and pure, hear from them about the beauties of Bhakti,
serve them. Yearn for it and pray for it to the Almighty Lord to give us Bhakti pure. As
one desires he gets. God is not cruel being. He is mercy incarnate. He knows what
we are in search after. Once He comes to know that we are really in search after this
love, unhesitatingly He will supply our demands to our hearts content. The fault is
ours. We are only talking about Bhakti and Mukhti. All false and invain. Not from the
heart. Impurity is the stumbling block on our way. So let us without partial eyes find
out all our weak points, exert ourselves to eradicate them one by one and pray unto
Him to give us Bhakti pure and noble and to make our mind the seat of Him alone
and nothing else.

God is what resists your desires and leads you as well as the whole universe without
being resisted
(P738 RamI in Vedanta ?)

We are eternally in contact with problems. Man is an obscure being, he knows little
of the world and of himself least of all ( Goethe)

Religion is a constitutional necessity of the human mind.
We see therefore that if one religion is true, all others must be true. There are
differences in non-essentials but in essentials they are all one. Your body will meet
death but your soul never.
Religion does not consist in doctrines and dogmas
Books never make religions but religions make books. No book ever created God but
God inspired all the great books
Love and Charity for the whole human race that is the test of true righteousness
It is good to be born in a church , but it is bad to die there. It is good to be born a
child but bad to serman a child.

He who studies books only for religion reminds one of the fable of the ass which
carried a heavy load of sugar on its back but did not know the greatness of it.
The only way to realize the Light above you is to strike the Spiritual Light within you
and the darkness of sin and impurity will flee away. Think of your higher Self and not
of your lower.
We have to take what appeals to our inner Spirit. (Sakshi, The Witness)

Swami Brahmananda
One thing is indeed a hard task, but not an impossibility. Men have crossed it before
and you too can cross it. Strive on, success is at hand. “Knock and it shall be opened
unto you”. The world will stand transformed to these very eyes of yours.
What is the distinction between the true vision of God and hallucination.? How to
distinguish and a very serious thing I must tell you. First choose your ideal and then
struggle to realize it. The ideal must never be lowered. God is the only ideal- God
who is smaller than an atom and bigger than the solar system; He who shines forth
everywhere, at all times and in all beings, in you and in me, differing only in
manifestation greater and smaller . He is the Paramatman that pervades the entire
universe. Nothing is superior to Him, Make Him your ideal, Him and Him alone. Try a
little and you will realize what an inexhaustible fount of Joy He is ! The world - you
have had enough experience of it ! Now try the other side- seek God. The veil of
maya hangs before you obstructing your vision of God. Tear it off and lo, He is there
! To cross maya’s bounds them?
From the true vision of God results a lasting bliss. One’s own mind knows it
instinctively.
If you get a glimpse of God , you will have infinite bliss and sensuous pleasures will
loose all charms for you. When you have once come to God, why should you be
fearful or anxious ? Give up all things of the world and dwell on Him and Him alone.

He is born in vain, who having attained the human birth , so difficult to get,
does not attempt to realize God in this very life

- Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna
