Doctoral Dissertations on TA
1963 - 1980

Abstract
Analyzed 124 doctoral dissertations re-
lated to TA and reported during the period
1963-1980 from universities primarily in
the United States. Dissertations were
categorized by topic (as indicated by the
title), by geographic area, by type of degree
granted, and by the writer's gender. Effec-
tiveness of transactional analysis was the
most frequent research topic, and "theory"
the second most reported topic. "Ego
states" were the most frequent theoretical
concept considered.
The Appendix is included for further
research.
What has happened to the science of TA
in the ten years since the death of Eric
Berne and the beginning of the Transac-
tional Analysis Journal? One index of the
research on TA is the growing list of
doctoral dissertations related to TA
accepted by American universities.
This study reviews doctoral disser-
tations relating to TA. Factors studied
were: time periods, frequency by topic and
date, frequency of concepts of TA theory,
geographical region and date, frequency
of type of degree and frequency by sex.
The review of the dissertations covers
the period from 1963 through November
1980. Only dissertations done for a degree
granted in the United States were included
in the research except for three disserta-
tions done at the University of Alberta in
Canada. Trends, changes and general para-
meters were investigated.
Method
A review was done of all TA research
studies which have appeared in the Disser-

tation Abstracts International (DAI) up to
December 1, 1980. One hundred and
twenty-four dissertations have been written
on TA up to this date. No attempt was
made to examine the actual dissertations.
Data were obtained through a computer-
ized search of the literature (AIRES).
The listings give the order number, title
number of pages in the manuscript, author,
date of degree, university where authors
degree was completed, location of the
abstract in DAI and the type of degree the
author was granted.
Reviewof the Literature
The first dissertation entitled Prediction
oj Interpersonal Behavior by Berne's Ego
State Psychology was written in 1963 by
Albert Hall at the University of Portland.
Three other dissertations appeared before
Berne's death; one each in the years 1968,
1969, and 1970. Since Berne's death and
the beginning of the Journal, one hundred
twenty more dissertations on TA have been
written. This compares to two hundred
dissertations which have been written on
hypnosis during the same time period.
The greatest number of dissertations in
one year was twenty-three written in 1975.
Also 1976-1978 were productive
years. After the surge from 1975-1978,
there seems to be a leveling off of the
number of dissertations written in 1979
with only eleven appearing during this
year. The majority of the dissertations
written in 1980 will not appear in the DAI
until after January 1981, so no descriptive
data are yet available for 1980.
Frequency by Topic and Date
One hundred twenty-four dissertations
were selected for this study. The titles of

each of these dissertations were categorized
in thirteen topics using a somewhat ex-
panded version of topics used by
McClenaghan in her study of TA research
(1978, p. 60-65). The title of each disser-
tation was then coded according to its topic
and date the dissertation was written as can
be seen on Table 2.
The most popular topic written about
from 1963-1980 was "effectiveness" with
a total of forty-one dissertations written
in this area. The second most important
topic was in the area of "theory" which
accounted for twenty-nine dissertations.
Coming in third in popularity were the
topics of "test development" and "edu-
cation" with eleven dissertations each. The
rest of the topics were fairly equally dis-
tributed varying from one to six disserta-
tions in each of these areas.
Frequency of Specific Concepts of
TATheory
Only twenty-seven percent of the disser-
tations written on TA investigated specific
concepts of TA theory. The majority of
the dissertation research reported the
application of transactional analysis to
specific areas. Of the specific concepts that
have been investigated the most frequent
one studied has been ego states. As can
be seen on Table 3, twenty-two disserta-
tions have been written on ego states. The

next most popular topic has been "life
script" with four dissertations written in

Many of these dissertations on specific
19 concepts involved the development of
19 reliable and valid operational measures of
23 the TA theoretical concepts. This appears
10 to be a very favorable trend, since "most

3 of the evidence of the validity of the TA
4 theory itself has been culled from clinical
1 observation" (McClenaghan, 1978, p. 48).

continued validation of TA theory and its
effectiveness.
Frequency by Geographical Region
and Date
The next step in reviewing the disserta-
tions for trends and changes was to corre-
late the dates of the dissertations with the
locations in which they were written. The
university settings of the dissertations were
divided into the seven main geographic
regions as follows: (1) Middle Atlantic
States; (2) Midwestern States; (3) New
England States; (4) Pacific Coast States;
(5) Rocky Mountain States; (6) Southern
States and (7) Southwestern States. Table
4 shows the region into which each state
falls.
Regions in which dissertations originated
were then correlated with the time-frame
of the dissertations as shown in Table 5.
Not surprisingly, the first dissertation
was a 1963 project in the Pacific Coast
States. However, another dissertation was
not produced in this region again until 1973
and only six more after that. It is sur-
prising that only nine dissertations have
come from the Pacific Coast States, since
this region has appeared to be the strong-
hold for TA since its beginnings.
The Southern States have produced the
largest number of dissertations (N = 40).
In 1975 alone there were nine disserta-
tions in this region compared to nine in
the Pacific Coast States for the total
period studied as can be seen in Figure 1.

The second largest producer of disser-
tations on TAwas the Mid-Western States
with a total of twenty-nine.
The Middle Atlantic, Rocky Mountain,
and Southwestern States have been some-
what productive with totals of eleven,
thirteen, and fifteen, respectively. The
least productive region has been the New
England States with a total of four disserta-
tions.
Frequency by Degree and Sex
The most popular degree awarded to
people writing dissertations on TAwas that
of a Doctor of Philosophy with a total of
eighty-four of these degrees. Thirty-three

Summary and Conclusions

Geographic Regions ofthe United States The findings of this review of TA dis-
sertation research show the general trends
('4\ and changes in these areas of research.
The ways of analyzing this material is by no
means exhausted. The study provides an
indication of the trends and kinds of dis-
sertations done on transactional analysis.
Some specific findings of this study are:
1. Dissertations on TA have increased
since 1971 with the greatest number appear-
ing in 1975.
2. Approximately 124 dissertations on
TA have been written since the first one in
Figure 1 1963.They can be divided as follows:
