CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. About the Novel


Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book in J. K.
Rowling's Harry Potter book series. It was one of the most widely-anticipated books
of the series, since there was a wait of three years between it and the previous
book, Goblet of Fire. At 38 chapters, it is also the longest book in the series, having
jokingly been labelled as heavier than a refrigerator (by Stephen Fry at the Royal Albert
Hall event) and used as a benchmark for the size of the next two books.

B. Synopsis
Harry is in his fifth year at Hogwarts School as the adventures continue. There is a
door at the end of a silent corridor. And it's haunting Harry Potter's dreams. Why else
would he be waking in the middle of the night, screaming in terror? Harry has a lot on
his mind for this, his fifth year at Hogwarts: a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher
with a personality like poisoned honey; a big surprise on the Gryffindor Quidditch
team; and the looming terror of the Ordinary Wizarding Level exams. But all these
things pale next to the growing threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, one that
neither the magical government nor the authorities at Hogwarts can stop. As the grasp
of darkness tightens, Harry must discover the true depth and strength of his friends, the
importance of boundless loyalty, and the shocking price of unbearable sacrifice. His
fate depends on them all. The book that took the world by storm. In his fifth year at
Hogwarts, Harry faces challenges at every turn, from the dark threat of He-Who-Must-
Not-Be-Named and the unreliability of the government of the magical world to the rise
of Ron Weasley as the Keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Along the way he
learns about the strength of his friends, the fierceness of his enemies, and the meaning
of sacrifice.
CHAPTER II
ANALYSIS

1. Plot
a) Structure of Plot
 Exposition
Harry and his cousin attacked by hooded figure that gliding smoothly toward
him. The figure is the prison guards of Azkaban that is Dementors, when they were
running in the alley. Because it was forced by situation, Harry violating school rules
that using magic under age “Expecto Patronum!” and using the magic in front of
Muggle (not witch).

 Rising action / complication


Harry received a letter from Department of Mysteries contains he is expelled
from Hogwarts because of his actions using under age magic in outside of school.
Harry prosecuted at The Departemen of Mistery. After the incident, Harry Potter
shunned friends at school and considered mad by almost all readers of the
newspaper “Daily Prophet” published by Ministry of Magic. Almost every night,
Lord Voldemort began pervaded his mind, and make the head of Harry felt hurt at
any moment because of the scars throb and feels very hot when Voldemort
possessed his mind. At school, Prof. Umbridge Jane Dolores visit Hogwarts as the
new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He arrived with the new regulations.
He does not teach magic exercise for the students, but he teaches theory. Since the
ministry of magic interfered all about school without the approval of the headmaster
and made a lot of new regulation one of them is all student organization is banded,
any student in noncompliance will be expelled. Harry and friend feels tortured
during Prof. Umbridge work at school with everything her regulation but, Ron,
Hermione and Harry Potter stayed to forming a secret group of defense, call
themselves "Dumbledore's Army". Eventually, they arrested by a team of
investigators made by Prof. Umbridge with introgate one of Dumbledores’ Army
is Cho chang.

 Climax / turning of point


Harry has a vision of his godfather, Sirius Black, being tortured by Lord
Voldemort, Harry and members of Dumbledore's Army (Hermione, Ron Weasly,
Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley) decided to fly to London
by way Thestral (winged horse magical creatures) to the Department of Mysteries
to save Sirius Black. When Harry Potter and friends arrived they entered in
Departement of ministry but there was no Sirius Black. Harry took a forecast that
made for him, but the Death Eaters, including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix
Lestrange try to grab it. Finally, Harry Potter and his friends fight with the Death
Eaters. However, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Neville, and Ginny catched by the Death
Eaters when Harry give a forecast, Sirius Black and The Order of the Phoenix
appears, they attacking Lucius Malfoy and then a forecast fell and broke. The Order
of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters are still attacking each other. Finally Bellatrix
Lestrange was succeed to kill Sirius Black. Harry Potter really angry and chased
Bellatrix Lestrange. Suddenly, Voldemort appears. He was ready to kill Harry but
Dumbledore turned to face the battle against Voldemort. Suddenly, Voldemort
disappeared and obsessed with Harry and remembering images from his past, his
family and his friends.

 Falling action

After Voldemort pervaded Harry Potter, he throw out from Harry body’s.
because Harry Potter states that he is stronger than Voldemort. And Voldemort
never knows how love and friendship.
 Denoument / resolution

Finally, all the witches believes to Harry Potter that Voldemort has returned.
And Dumbledore explains that he has been trying to distance himself from Harry
Potter through out the year, hoping it will reduce the risk of Voldemort finds and
uses the relationship between the two.

b) Technique of plot

Technique of plot from this novel is Chronological.

2. Character and characterization


1) Major Character
 Harry Potter is protagonist character. He has proportionate body, wears glasses,
and injury on his forehead. Harry Potter had white skin, brown hair. The
character have spoken the same way as other youth because they put their own
selfish, brave, obedient to the rules, and sometimes grumpy.
 Hermione Granger is protagonist character. She has the characteristic of long
curly hair and brownish blond, sharp nose and white skin. The character have
polite when she spoke, she likes read a book and her mind like a scientist. She
is understanding, diligent, obedient, do not want to find the problem, and
sometimes stubborn if squarrel opinions.
 Ronald Weasley is protagonist character. He has the characteristic short straight
red hair, split side hair, sharp nose, and high. He is not brave to express his
opinion, afraid to talk to others, shy, timid, insecure, careless, easy drop mental
actually, he is brave in this chapter.
 Lord Voldemort is antagonist character. The character is the enemy of Harry
Potter. Her bald head, flat nose. He did not have compassion, and do not feel
pity to anyone. He is very smart in planning something.
2) Minor character
 Albus Dumbledor is The headmaster of Hogwarts School. Dumbledore is an
old and powerful wizard and He prepresents wisdom, strength, and integrity.
