Management information system
Management Information System (MIS) sometimes
referred to as Information Management and Systems

 is the discipline covering the application of

people, technologies, and procedures collectively
called information systems

 To solving business problems.

e.g., Decision Support Systems, Expert systems,
and Executive information systems.

Background:
In their infancy, business computers were used
for the practical business of computing the payroll and
keeping track of accounts payable and receivable.

Today, the term is used broadly in a number of

contexts and includes (but is not limited to): decision
support systems, resource and people management
applications, project management, and database
retrieval application

Before one can explain management information
systems, the terms systems, information, and
management must briefly be defined:

 System includes an orderly arrangement

according to some common principles or rules
 Information includes knowledge acquired by
some means.
 Management is usually defined as planning,
organizing, directing, and controlling the business
operation.

Definitions of MIS:

 Management Information System An

information system that integrates data from all
the departments it serves and provides
operations and management with the information
they require.

 Accounting Dictionary: MIS Computer-based or

manual system that transforms data into
information useful in the support of decision
making.

4
Features of MIS:

 Input and output

 For tactical managers

 Draw from all departments

 Produce several kinds of reports

Functions of MIS:

MIS can be classified as performing three functions:

1. To generate reports-for example,

• financial statements, or inventory status

reports,

• Performance reports needed for routine or

non- purpose

5
2. To support decision making. This type of
MIS is appropriately called Decision Support
System.

Goals of an MIS:

 Provide managers with information

 Regular, routine operations

 Control, organize and plan better

In this figure it shows how management information

systems obtain their data from the organization’s

TPS. In the system illustrated by this diagram, three
TPS supply summarized transaction data at the end
of the time period to the MIS reporting system.
Managers gain access to the organizational data
through the MIS, which provides them with the
appropriate reports.
Uses:

 All major airlines to facilitate day-to-day

operations and short- and long term planning.

 As pervasive in hospital (patient accounting,

point-of-care processing, and so on).

 Insurance (claims processing systems,

policy administration, actuarial statistics, and so
on).

 Other organizations that use computers both

for information processing and to gather
information for decision making (include digital
firms and so on).

Summary:

8
 In nut shell, we can say that management
Information System consist of people, equipment
and procedure to gather the information needed
by the management in the process of decision
making and help them to achieve the
organizational goals with effectiveness and
efficiency.
