Το Πάριο Χρονικό βρέθηκε τον 16ο αι. μ.Χ. πάνω σε μια κολοβωμένη
στήλη στη νήσο Πάρο (από όπου και το όνομά του)· μεταφέρθηκε στη
Σμύρνη από τον κόμη του Arundel το 1627 και κατόπι στο Λονδίνο,
όπου τοποθετήθηκε πρώτα στους κήπους του Henry Howard, συγγενή
του Arundel. Η στήλη έγινε γνωστή ως το Μάρμαρο Άρουντελ· το 1667
προσφέρθηκε στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης, όπου μεταφέρθηκε
τελικά. Δημοσιεύτηκε πρώτα στο Λονδίνο από τον John Selden το 1628
(Marmora Arundelliana· Johannes Seldenus, σχ. 4ο).

Η επιγραφή αύτη είναι γεγραμμένη Αττικους γράμμασιν έπι τμημάτων
δύο πλακός, λίθου Πεντελησίου, Ευρέθη το 1852 Απριλίου 22 εις τας προς
το Δυτικών των προπυλαίων Αρχαιολογικάς ανασκαφάς τού αγαθου
Γάλλου Κυρίου Βεύλε (Beulé, τά γράμματα εισί γεγραμμένα στοιχηδόν.
Το ύψος της μιας πλακος της μεγαλητέρας είναι 3200, το πλάτος 180 Ο
και το πάχος 220 0. Αμφότερα δε εισιν άκρωτηριασμένα έκτε του άνω
μέρους αυτών, εκ των πλαγίων, και του κάτω μέρους, Εκ του σωζομένου
μέρους της επιγραφής εξάγεται, ότι είναι Ψήφισμα του Δήμου των
Αθηναίων, αποβλέπει δε εισπραξιν χρημάτων δημοσίων. Εις την δευτέραν
αναγνώσκεται και ο πολέμαρχος Καλλίας είναι τάχα ούτος ο Καλλίας ό
Καλλιάδου όστρα τηγός των Αθηναίων, όστις έφονεύθη έντή ές
Ποτίδαιανμάχη; Εάν τούτο υποθέσωμεν, τότε εικάζομεν, ότι ή επιγραφή
αύτη αναφέρεται εις τάς κατά την Πύδναν και Ποτίδαιαν εκστρατείας
τών Αθηναίων, και τάς δι'αυτάς δαπάνας. Κ. Κ. Πιττάκης.
Εις την 35 γραμμην την λέξιν ΔΙΑΙ άνεπλήρωσα εις (έν Δία, ήτοι εις την
σειράν ταύτην ήσαν αναγε. γραμμένοι οι πεσόντες έντή Δία υπέρ
Πατρίδος. Το όνομα Δία θηλυκώς αναφέρεται και επί γυναικών και επί
πόλεως. Δία εκαλείτο ή Νάξος, Στεφ. Ευσταθ.] και πόλις Θεσσαλίας, και
έτέρα Θράκης, κατά τον Αθω, και Ευβοίας, και Πελοποννήσου νήσος, και
πόλις περί το Σκύλλαιον, και Λυσιτανίας περί τον Ωκεανών, και Ιταλίας

Frequentissimi erano in Grecia questi sepolcri, decorati da bassirilievi che
alludevano a magnanime imprese, da epigrafi che perpetuavano i nomi dei
defunli, e da patetiche elegie che esprimevano Г ammirazioné e il
compianto délia patria per la morte onorata dei valorosi. Demostene ci ha
conservato Г epicedio che fu posto agli Ateniesi periti a Cherofiea
difendendo la liberta della Grecia (1); Visconti ha illustrate quello pei
guerrieri morti sotto le mura di Potidea (2), e Pausania afferma che a
Figalia eravi il cimiterio comune degli scelti Orestasii, e che lor faceansi
ogni anno de'funerali come ad Eroi (3). Non dubitiamo che sopra taluno di
questi tumuli non fosse ancora il nostro bassorilievo, appartenente ad un
monumento insigne eretto nei migliori tempi dell' arti greche. Il marmo è
pentelico, bassissimo il rilievo, e alquanto sparuto e consunto. Ma lo stile
