Using the SEL-3094 as an EIA-422 Channel

Simulator for Bench Testing the SEL-311L
Ken Fodero and Kevin Leech

INTRODUCTION
To perform bench testing of Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) with synchronous EIA-422
interfaces, an external clock signal is required. A communications multiplexer or a channel
simulation device can provide this clock signal. This application guide describes how to use two
SEL-3094 Interface Converters to provide a clock source for bench testing SEL-311L relays or
other devices with a synchronous EIA-422 interface.

DESCRIPTION
The EIA-422 standard is not well suited for back-to-back connections because an external clock
must always be supplied. Normally, the digital multiplexer that the SEL-311L uses as its
connection onto the digital network supplies this clock. When performing bench testing on a pair
of SEL-311L relays equipped with EIA-422 interfaces, it is not always possible to have a digital
multiplexer connection. Therefore, some type of channel simulation equipment is required.
Figure 1 shows a back-to-back SEL-311L test connection using a pair of SEL-3094s as the
external clock source. Note that, in this application, the SEL-3094 provides a 64-kilobit clock to
the SEL-311L relays under test.

RELAY SETTINGS
For this test application, we show the SEL-311L settings for a relay with an EIA-422 interface on
Channel X. Note that the channel address feature is enabled in this example. Figure 2 and
Figure 3 show the settings for Channel X for each SEL-311L relay, while Table 1 shows the
SEL-3094 settings.
