“Light”

______________________________________________________________________

Central Focus/Big Idea:

Forms of Energy

Subject of this lesson:

Light travels in a straight line.

Grade Level:
4th Grade

NC Essential Standard(s):
4.P.3.2 Recognize that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels
from one medium to another, and that light can be reflected, refracted, and
absorbed.

21st Century Skills:

They are using collaboration and leadership/responsibility. The reason I chose these is
because they are having to work together to describe what is happening to the light
when it is being shined in the hole. They will be taking their findings and discussing it
with other students within the class. They are also having to use some leadership in the
group to keep the activity moving and making sure every student is getting a chance to
try out the activity.

The reason I picked describe is because the students will be describing what is
happening when they shine their flashlights in the hole of the index cards.

• Scientific Vocabulary:
Light, shadows, straight line, reflected, refracted, and
absorbed.

Instructional Objective:
Students will work in a group to describe how light travels. The students will need to
receive a 7 to 8 points to receive mastery.

Prior Knowledge (student):

Students should be able to describe how light travels.

Content Knowledge (teacher):

The teacher should already know how light travels. They should also know what causes
shadows.

Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group):

The teacher will provide the ELL students with worksheets that have more pictures.
They can also place a advanced student in a group with the ELL student for extra help.
A advanced learner will also be placed with any other students that might need extra
help. The advanced learner can also be the “leader” of the group.

Materials and Technology requirements:

Index cards (15 total- 3 for each group), ruler(5- one for each group), pencil(27- One for
each person), flashlight (5- one for each group), single-hole punch (5- one for each
group)

Total Estimated Time:

45 minutes

Source of lesson:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm__GAlrBuQ

Safety considerations:
The teacher will help the students punch their holes in the index cards. Students will be
told the rules to having a flashlight (no hitting people with it, or shinning it into anyone's
eyes.)

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

Engage:
The teacher will start by reading the book “Bear Shadows by Frank Asch” to the
students.
Here is the link to a read aloud of this book:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwseOYoqeog

The teacher will ask the students:

- “How does the sun affect our daily life?”
- “What causes shadows?”

Explore:
“ Today we will learn about how light travels.”
● The teacher will break the class up into groups. Each group will get three index
cards, one flashlight, 3 balls of play doh.
● Students will stand the cards up in the balls of play doh, spacing them about 15
cm apart, one behind the other so they can see straight through the holes.
● One at a time the students will take turn shining the light into the hole in the three
cards they will record what they notice on a sheet of paper.
● Next, the students will try to shine the light from an angle into the holes and see
what happens.
● Last, the students will take the black paper and put it between the cards. This
paper has no holes in it. They will then shine the light though the first hole and
see what happens.

While the students are working on this, the teacher will walk around and ask these
questions:
- “What are you observing?”
- “What happens if you shine the light in an angle?”
- What happens when the light hits the black paper?”

Explanation:
- At this time everyone will come back together. The teacher will engage the class
in a discussion on their findings.
- The teacher will discuss how light moves in a straight line. The teacher will talk
about how light can not bend to go around the object that is in its path.
Some questions the teacher can use is:
● “What changed when you moved the cards?”
● “How did you make the light travel through the holes in all three cards at the
same time?”
● “What did you find out about light?”
Elaborate:
During this time the class will watch a video about light.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm__GAlrBuQ

With the teacher stopping the video and asking the students questions, they will be able
to apply what was learned during this lesson with what is happening in the video.

If time allows, the student will have time to work on the “Light” worksheet.

Evaluate:
+Formative assessment: The questions that were asked during the whole lesson to the
students.

+For their Summative assessment the students will be given a exit ticket. This exit ticket
will have 4 questions.
1. What does the light do when you shine it straight into the first hole?
2. What does the light do when you shine it from the side into the hole?
3. Draw a picture of the three index cards and the light.
4. Draw a picture of the three index cards with the black paper and the light.

Rubric:
2 point for each correct answer- they can receive a total of 8 points

To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate

Assessment Results of all objectives/skills:

After looking over the student exit ticket and walking around the room asking the
students questions, more than 90% of the students got the full 8 points on the exit ticket.
I would do a quick review and move on to the next lesson, the next day.
