Name at least three goals that you want to accomplish through the course of your project.
Understand the process for making an electric power generator that is powered by hand power.

Provide electric power not in the form of electric outlets to people who are either interested or can
make use of it

Understand the feasibility of renewable energy (to a small extent) and how much of it can be made
compared to electric outlet energy

How will you demonstrate/what will show that you’ve accomplished these goals?
We will have a complete procedure for making an electric generator and have an electric generator

We will be able to distribute generators to those who want them

We will calculate the amount of energy we can generate or the rate, or at least get close to a percentage
of electrical outlet energy that we can generate

Who will benefit from your project? (This could be a person or a group or a category.)
People who need the electricity from handheld generators, or people who are interested in handheld
generators

Potential Concerns and How You Plan to Address Them

Concern Plan of Attack
Funding (for parts) Use materials that cost less, and get minor funds
from people close to us
Utility (will the generator be useful?) Give the generators) to those without access to
electricity, who have no other option
Time (for effectiveness) Once we finish creating the generator, find ways
to increase productivity
Time(building) Create a timesheet to determine the optimal time
to build when everyone and the supervisor is
available
Gathering the Materials Find materials at home first, and then if still
missing research online to determine which stores
to purchase from.

If there is/are one or more culminating event(s), where and when will it/they take place?

Bike marathon Between September and December 2016

Does your project require reservation of any facility, property, or equipment owned by Bellevue School

Does your project involve any type of fundraising or fund management?

If your project involves fundraising on any Bellevue School District property or using Interlake High
School or Bellevue School District's name, who on your team is taking responsibility for compliance with
Washington State, Bellevue School District, and Interlake High School rules and laws?
Richard Dong
See the State Activity Coordinator's Guide for Associated Study Body under IB CAS Reporting
Resources.

Note: Conducting any type of fundraiser as part of your CAS project will require
reading and applying the State Activity Coordinators' Guide and reviewing the
guidelines with your supervisor, and consulting with the Athletic Director, if your
project falls within the purview of BSD or Interlake ASB.

Research how to build electric generators Everyone (primarily

9/1/16 Richard Dong)

Build at least one electric generator Richard Dong

9/1/16
What progress have you made on your three goals?
Only one group member (Richard Dong) who made the first electric generator has currently
understood the process of making a hand powered electric generator.

Regarding the goal to provide electrical energy to people, we modified it so that we will provide
electrical energy to people who are interested in generating it while biking. We are working on
making an electrical generator work with bikes.

Regarding the feasibility of electric energy from hand power or other basic mechanical sources,
there is very little feasibility. The amount of electric current and voltage generated from the first
generator that was made was very small (6 volts and less than 100 milliamperes).

What issues/concerns have come up and how you’ve addressed them?

Issues/Concern How You’ve Handled Them

It appears that electric generators can be built

Funding for electric parts with relatively inexpensive parts, making
funding not a very significant issue

We recognized at this point that the utility

Utility (usefulness of the generator) will be very limited (low voltage and current
generated) so the generators will likely not be
used to power anything, but instead they will
just be powered when people are biking and
power a device that can take a video of the
biking.

Gathering the Materials The materials for the first generator were not
difficult to gather, but it might still be difficult
to gather materials for more generators,
especially if we want the other generators to
produce more electric power.

Time for the group to meet and build the The group has not decided on times to build
generator more generators

Productivity of the Generator The generator is not very productive so unless

the other generators built are much more
productive, the generator will likely not be
used to power anything major.

If there is/are one or more culminating event(s), where and when will it/they take place?
Where When

If this event is to be held on BSD property or is an official BSD-approved activity, what BSD employee will
be present?
Don’t forget to refer to the State Activity Coordinator's Guide for Associated Study Body under IB CAS
Reporting Resources.
