1.0 Introduction
During the night on February 16th to 17th, 2018 intense rains were registered in the
region of Barcarena, PA (231mm in 10 hours), which resulted in an overflow of the Rain
Water Storage Basin (SUMP 45). The rain water from this part of the Refinery is
considered clean without any contact with the Refinery Production Areas, where caustic
soda is the main contaminant. The website climate-data.org indicates that the average
volume of rainfall for the entire month of February is approximately 365mm. As a
consequence of this overflow, the rain water was directed to the piping next to the
vegetation of the Murucupi river. On the morning of February 19th, 2018, HYDRO
ALUNORTE conducted an evaluation of the environmental conditions of the
downstream areas of SUMP 45 until the Murucupi river, using internal resources, to
determine whether there has been any environmental impact associated with this
incident. More specifically, this internal assessment was performed in order to:
Assess whether the reddish color effluent reached the vegetation and
subsequently the Murucupi River;
Investigate the quality of the soil along the path of preferential flow of water between
the pipe and the Murucupi river;
To evaluate the quality of surface waters of the Murucupi river (pH, electrical
conductivity and temperature);

Through the observations and the results recorded in the field, HYDRO ALUNORTE
concludes that, "the vegetation has not suffered change or contamination due to
effluent from the SUMP 45 area piping. In addition, there was no evidence of
contamination or alteration in the color of the water of the Murucupi River. However,
with the circulation of false information in communities around the refinery, HYDRO
ALUNORTE decided to hire Enviro-TEC to perform this Environmental Investigation
to confirm the conditions of the area downstream of the SUMP 45 and the Murucupi
River."
The sampling plan of this preliminary investigation was based on the information of the
incident supplied by HYDRO ALUNORTE and remarks made by the Enviro-TEC
professional during a visit in the area on February 20th, 2018. During this visit, a small
area in the vicinity of the piping outlet with evidence of red dust characteristic of water
flow with mud (Figure 1- 3). A hole was observed in this area (Temporary Basin - Figure
1-4) which was excavated by HYDRO ALUNORTE soon after the event of the incident
with the objective to capture and return the drainage water to the Refinery rainwater
management system. Then, the Enviro-TEC Environmental Engineer followed the
preferred path of drainage of runoff waters of this area, controlled by the topographic
gradient, until the Murucupi River. Along the path, the environmental conditions of
natural vegetation and points of sampling conducted by HYDRO ALUNORTE the
previous day were observed . Pictures of these points and natural conditions observed
are shown in Figures 1-5 to 1-8. Evidences of the passage of muddy water were not
identified along that path, in addition to the area already indicated earlier around the
piping outlet. At the arrival point of the Murucupi River, the river water was transparent,
and even a little whitish color characteristic of natural soils of the area.

This line must be oriented perpendicular to the direction of potential flow for
drainage with the center of the line in point 2. These soil samples must be
analyzed for pH.
Collect 5 samples in line (0.0-0.1m) in point 3 (Figure 1 from the HYDRO report).
This line must be oriented perpendicular to the direction of potential flow for
drainage with the center of the line in point 3. These soil samples must be

Collect 5 samples in line (0.0-0.1m) in point 4 (Figure 1 from the HYDRO report).
This line must be oriented perpendicular to the direction of potential flow for
drainage with the center of the line in point 4. These soil samples must be
analyzed for pH.
Collect 5 samples in line (0.0-0.1m) in point 5 (Figure 1 from the HYDRO report).
This line must be oriented perpendicular to the direction of potential flow for
drainage with the center of the line in point 5. These soil samples must be
analyzed for pH.
Collect 3 samples of surface water and sediments from the Murucupi River, including
1 set aligned with point 5, 1 whole directed approximately 20m upstream of Point 5
and 1 guided set to about 20m downstream of Point 5. Each sample of surface water
must be analyzed for pH, conductivity, turbidity, salinity, temperature, Eh and total
dissolved solids, and each sample of sediment must be analyzed for pH.
This sampling program is focused on the characterization of the potential impacts after
the piping outlet and only along the surface that has the greatest risk to be impacted, and
does not represent a characterization of the potential impacts between SUMP 45 and the
piping. If signs of contamination in this portion of the study (particularly in the area
impacted visibly at the piping outlet) could not be identified, we can consider that the
conditions between SUMP 45 and the piping are similar. All these analyzes must be
carried out in the field with Enviro-TEC instruments, duly calibrated. In the event of
identification of pH values > 9.0, Enviro-TEC recommends the collection of samples for
laboratory analyzes (metals, sulfate and alkalinity).

2.0 Procedure for surveys and the collection of samples
Prior to the commencement of the drilling activities in each location, a rigorous process
of excavation liberation was performed along with the Authorized Professional from
HYDRO ALUNORTE. The objective of this liberation process is to confirm that each
marked point is free of obstacles and dangers, from air on the surface and underground.
Thus, representatives from each HYDRO ALUNORTE department responsible for the
process lines and piping; lines and main drainage piping (rain water, sanitary water and
effluents);, septic tanks and reservoirs; and the networks of air, gas, power and
telecommunications were involved in evaluating and releasing of each point before its
implementation.
The gauge Hanna Phem soil HI99121, used to measure the pH directly on soils, and
the Horiba U-52 meter, used for the measurements of pH, electrical conductivity,
turbidity, temperature, salinity, Eh and total dissolved solids in the water, were duly
calibrated with original calibration solutions of manufacturers of these instruments
immediately before the commencement of the sampling activities.

of diameter, constructed of stainless steel, and properly cleaned. The soil was removed
from the auger using a clean spoon, also made of stainless steel, and placed in a clean
stainless steel bowl, where the pH measurement of the soil in the sample was
performed with the instrument Hanna Phem, duly calibrated. All the information of
measures, including the results were recorded in the field book, as shown in Table 2-
1. All equipment have been properly cleaned/decontaminated with distilled water
between the samples. The location of each of these soil samples is presented in Figures
2-1A and 2- 1B.
A review of data obtained indicated that the higher pH value detected was associated
to the sample SO-01 (7.82) of the surface soil collected at the piping outlet. The
concentrations of pH in the soil around the reddish area presented values between 4,79-
6.50 and concentrations of pH in soils collected along the outer perimeter, not reddish,
presented values between 4,94-6,40, indicating no difference in the quality of the soil
inside and outside the reddish area. The concentrations of pH in soils collected in the
downstream lines vary between 4,80-7,33, also, without evidence of environmental
impact.
These results indicate that the rain water overflow from SUMP 45 and discharged to
the forest downstream area of SUMP 45 were not contaminated by the HYDRO
ALUNORTE industrial process and did not cause any negative impact in the quality
of the soil which were in contact with the rain water.
Supporting the rainwater effluent quality assessment which originated from the reddish
area, ENVIRO-TEC collected a sample from the Temporary Basin (Sample SW-01) and
measured the following parameters using the Horiba U-52 instrument, duly calibrated:
pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygem, turbidity, salinity, temperature, Eh and
total dissolved solids. The results of these analyzes are presented below:
These results are consistent with rain water without evidence of chemical
contamination.
In support of the evaluation of the quality of Murucupi River, and to determine whether
there is evidence of impact on the water quality and/or sediments in the river associated
with industrial activities of HYDRO ALUNORTE, Enviro-TEC has collected 3 sets of
samples of surface water and sediments along the course of the river, including a

Sample at the point where the preferred path of drainage has intersected the river; a
sample located approximately 20m upstream from this point; and a sample located about
20m downstream of the same point.
To maximize the representativeness of the samples, the sampling program was started at
the furthest point downstream of the river and continued in the direction of flow to the
point further upstream. The same way, the samples of surface water were always
collected before the collection of the sample of sediments. The water quality of the
Murucupi River was measured directly, with the placement of the Horiba probe straight
into the river. A summary of the measurements recorded in the three points is presented
below:
These results of the river water do not present any evidence of negative impact on their
quality. The only parameter that drew attention are the low values of dissolved oxygen.
However, these low values of dissolved oxygen are highly consistent with the
groundwater flush.
The collection of sediments at each point of the river was performed with the manual
auger and the pH of sediment analyzes used the same process of measures from the
soil. The pH results of these sediments are presented in Table 2-1 and indicated the
same range of variation of soils with concentrations of 4,55-6,42.

3.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
On days 16th to 17th of February 2018, an out of the ordinary heavy rain event occurred.
As a consequence, the HYDRO ALUNORTE rainwater capture system limit was
overcome, causing an overflow on SUMP 45. These effluents overflowed from SUMP
45 originated in areas of low risk of contact with process liquor and did not have the
characteristics of the process liqueurs or bauxite waste.
The characterization of the overflow of the downstream area from the piping outlet to
the Murucupi River, was investigated by Enviro-TEC on February 22nd, 2018, and
there was no evidence of significant environmental impact associated with this
overflow event. A small reddish area, with mud visually present on the surface, was
the only evidence found of the flow of effluents from rain water. A series of multi-level
samples were collected within the reddish area; along the outer perimeter of the reddish
area; and along the preferred path of drainage from this area to the Murucupi River,
and all these 41 soil samples showed the same range of pH, without differentiation of
areas - including the reddish area.
In addition to assess potential impacts on soil quality between SUMP 45 and the
Murucupi River, Enviro-TEC also evaluated the quality of the waters and sediments
from Murucupi River. In this case, 3 sets of samples of surface water and sediments
along the course of the river were collected, including a sample at the point where the
preferred path of drainage has intersected the river; a sample located approximately
20m upstream of this point; and a sample located about 20m downstream of the same
point.
The results of the river water quality do not present any evidence of negative impact
on the quality. The only parameter that drew attention are low values of dissolved
oxygen. However, these low values of dissolved oxygen are highly consistent with the
groundwater flush. The results of the analyzes of pH of sediments indicated the same
range identified in the soils investigated, with concentrations of pH between 4,55-
6,42.
9
Must expand the capacity of SUMP 45 and conduct a general review of the capacity of
the rainwater management system.
