INTRODUCTION

There are nearly 104 Million senior citizens (aged 60 years and above) in
India, out which 51 Million are Male and 53 Million are female. Although, the
population of the elderly are growing day by day, there is very less
information about their lifestyle. Everyone wants to help them, but lack the
basic knowledge of knowing what the senior citizens want. They don’t know
about the emotions they go through, how it impacts their life, how they cope
with them, what they do think and so on.

Hence, my research is based on the lifestyle of the elderly.

TOPIC- Late Adulthood and its Challenges.

OBJECTIVE-
To understand the period of late adulthood in the lives of the senior citizens
and know more about the challenges faced by them.

Aim-
To collect quantitative and qualitative data through close ended questions
and open-ended questions. Hence, scope of questions is focused on their
Physical issues and Mental coping.

HYPOTHESIS

relevant combinations of variables, was formed.

METHODS

This section includes the process of research and its methodologies.

Questionnaire

The research was initiated through brainstorming all the words related to
‘old age’. Few words were selected and a desk research was conducted. The
desk research included the blogs about their lives written by a few senior
citizens and a few research papers based on the social life, education, etc. of
the elderly population.
Through the desk research, an objective (as stated in Introduction) was
formed and was used to create a questionnaire.
The questionnaire included demographics, open ended and close ended
questions, multiple choice type answers, etc. which was made in Google
Forms and circulated around.

Sample

Using the inclusion/exclusion criteria, the participants were chosen based
on their Age. Only participants aged 60 years and above (senior citizens)
and living on their own/with family (not those living in an old age home)
were targeted.
The reasons for the above criteria being:
1) Age- according to the law, people aged 60years and above are considered
senior citizens.
2) Living conditions- people living on their own/ with family, exercise more
exposure and thus would be able to provide more information for the
study.

A sample size of 52 was taken and the data was collected. (F-13, M-39)

Test

Using the data, several tests were conducted to analyze it. The tests were
conducted on the SPSS software (SPSS_v23.0_MAC_OS).

As, all the data collected didn’t have a normal distribution, non-parametric
tests were conducted.

1) For difference, a Mann Whitney U Test, was conducted. (as there wasn’t
scope for a paired data)

A Mann Whitney U Test is done when:
a) Variables are discontinuous (discrete/ categorical)
b) The data is not normal
c) It’s a test of difference

2) For correlation/ association, a Chi Square Test was conducted.

A Chi Square Test is done when:
a) Variables are discontinuous (discrete/ categorical)
b) The data is not normal
c) It’s a test for association

RESULTS

Below are the results of the test conducted using Chi Square Test and Mann Whitney
U Test. It also includes results for the tests of normality, along with type of variables
and graphs showing the relevance of the hypothesis.

CONCLUSION

From the above results (graphs), we can conclude that 32.7% elders face the
challenge of fatigueness.
The major effect of this health issue is, helplessness (36.5%), however, they
are able to cope with it, through spending time with the families( 51.9%)
and meditating (46.2%).
No one (0%) visits the counselor incase of an issue, and tries to handle it by
themselves.

From the interpretations, we can conclude that there are 3 interesting
findings-
1) the elders find the need to prove their capabilities as they start growing
older.
2) there is a weak but significant correlation between financial statuses and
making friends easily, which shows that, income matters to fit into a society.
3) female wish to stay with their children more than men, in the period of
their late adulthood.

To lead an independent life
Income helps in providing financial security and carrying out
activities of interest which require major funds like tourism, housing

This income helps me to lead a very happy life free of any financial
worries and lead a very good and satisfied life.
To be self reliant and financially independent.
As it helps me in leading a decent life.
If you have your own income, you can live the life you want to.

WHY DO/DON’T YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF SENIOR CITIZENS?

Age
Enjoy being called Uncle
Satisfied with my age.
Nearing 75 years
I consider all citizens past the age of 70 years as senior citizens
I am a senior citizen as defined by age by the Govt. of India.
As I am a retired senior citizen from got job. Mentally I do not feel
as a senior citizen.
The term 'senior citizen' means availing benefits without working
even though one is healthy and capable enough to earn.
Being quite normal by health and still fully able bodied,
As I get tired quickly while doing household duties.
As I am working, with same potential like any other.
As defined by Indian law
Age and experience
Because I am past 70
I am interacting with youngsters
Due to age
This thinking makes me feel better
Because I am above 60 years of age.
Because of age which is of course just a number.
No problem
My physical activities cannot match with working citizens & also the
topic of discussions.
Should be younger by thoughts
Health is deteriorating
Due to health reasons
Age is 72
By definition.
Still feel dynamic and young
Do not find any difference in my life
I am still young
Yet to get admitted in a hospital
Age beyond 60 yrs.
It is a fact and it gives me respect
Due respect from people
I can lead independent life
Acceptance as senior citizen depends not solely on age.
Accepted
I don't have any health problems and I can independently move
around
I am 60 plus
I am seventy
Because everyone say
Cannot deny
At this age, we are surely senior citizen, Govt. pays pension based
on that.
Because of age
Age factor
Health issues

WHY HAS THE IMPORTANCE OF GOD INCREASED/ DECREASED IN
YOUR LIFE?

Same
No change
Remained same
Due to My faith
My experience
No impact
I have more free time. Prefer going to temple instead of a club
With advanced age you start realizing that you cannot put all the
efforts and your health issue multiply, this is the time you start
remembering God.
As I want to spend my time in a positive way.
Now I have ample time to devote for this cause too.
Always a God fearing but not superstitious person
It is good way to use spare time and pray for the betterment of the
family and others.
Increased
Belief
In late adulthood blessings from God is most important
Self is the God
That is a necessity
It gives me internal satisfaction
Always spiritual bent of mind.
I have always been spiritual.
No difference
Faith in God is more
Most of the achievements and failures are not our making.
I feel connected with God
Some time yes
I feel it's futile
By reading Geeta
Belief and faith
After going through the ups and downs in life.
Helped a lot
It is almost same as in my young age
Remains same
God has assigned a job to me. I have done my best and still doing
fine.
It wasn't important any time
He was always like that in my life
Unexplained super power
It remains same
Neutral
No change in my perception towards god
Prayer gives mental peace
Not applicable
Slightly increased. May be due to old age
Stayed the same.
It gives solace
It’s important from early stage of life
Realization
At this age, you feel any thing happening is due to GOD's grace.
We are always God worshiper
No change
Almost remaining same
