Lesson Plan 9 – The Purple Children

Motivational Set
- Video on British/Cyprus rebellion

- Discuss how this history will relate to the short story

Activities
1.1 – Edith Pargeter – Pre-reading
- Explain Edith’s background: born in 1913 died in 1995, born in England and was a
translator of English to Czech, received British Empire Medal in WWII for her work, had
a passion for writing historical fiction
- Have students discuss how her background may affect her writing and/or the content of
her writing
- This will be done in brainstorming form (teacher writing ideas on the board)

1.2 - Plot Graph


- Draw plot graph on the board and review expectations and elements of a plot graph
- Exposition: Setting and characters, Rising Action: elements of the story that contribute
to suspense or add complication to the story, Climax: At what point the conflict comes
to a head, Falling Action: The events following the climax, Resolution: the commencing
of the story and the resolution of the conflict in the story (if there is one)
- This activity will be completed as the story is read to the class, students will use their
own agency to complete the plot graph
- Results of the plot graph will be discussed following the end of the story

1.3 – Instagram Profile


- Provide students with the Instagram profile worksheet
- Explain their task of creating a character profile for either the guard OR the 15-year-old
captive and have them illustrate 6 images that character would have on their social
media as well as their number of followers, number they are following and the
character’s personalized username
- Provide the students the remainder of the class time to finish their worksheet
- If not completed, assign the worksheet for homework, due March 20
