INTRODUCTION
This manual provides information on installation and operation of the DVN 100-NET video
codec. The DVN 100-NET is a standalone, non-PC based, fully embedded video codec
capable of encoding and decoding video and audio from an analog video/audio source in real
time. It is compatible with any analog camera and incorporates a fully integrated, stereo
audio channel and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) control (RS 485). The DVN 100-NET can also be
combined with the powerful DVN 5000 Series platform for video/audio recording and
playback, alarm and auxiliary handling, and intelligent motion detection.

The DVN 100-NET uses MPEG4 compression technology implemented in the hardware to
provide up to 30 IPS (images per second) for the ultimate in crisp, clear, high resolution,
full-frame images. Image resolution consists of 720x576 pixels (PAL) or 720x480 pixels
(NTSC), and both image compression and image resolution can be adjusted.

PTZ controls, fully-integrated in DVN 100-NET, are exceptionally responsive with virtually
no latency, regardless of the available bandwidth. PTZ-capable cameras can be controlled
from any network-connected workstation. Easy, intuitive control of movement is available
with the PTZ graphic control panel.

The DVN 100-NET also includes an alarm input and auxiliary relay output. The alarm input
can be connected to an input device such as a motion detector or passive infrared detector
(PIR), and can be monitored using the VisionPocket and SiteManager client software
applications. When the input device triggers an alarm, VisionPocket and SiteManager can
detect it in real-time, notify the user, and respond accordingly (trigger an auxiliary relay
output, such as sounding an alarm or turning on a light).

NOTE
The faceplate of some DVN 100-NET units may display AUDIO ports labeling
that is different from the one described in this manual. However, regardless of
the labeling, functionality of those ports is as specified in this document.

Table 3-6: Encoder Setup Options

Setting Description
Name Descriptive name of the encoder (e.g. LAN High Resolution).
Algorithm Hardware compression of video footage for the selected
camera – affects the relative image quality and bandwidth.
Video/audio compression codec reference:
 MPEG4 CBR (Constant Bit Rate) – Encoder uses a
constant amount of bandwidth, according to the
bandwidth setting.
 MPEG4 ABR (Adaptive/Available Bit Rate) – The
encoder will dynamically adjust bandwidth to maintain
video quality, but will only use the amount of bandwidth
necessary for current motion level. However, it will not
exceed the maximum bit rate specified. When the
maximum is reached, it will sacrifice quality to avoid
exceeding the maximum.
 MPEG4 VBR (Variable Bit Rate) – Same as ABR, but
with no limit. Will adjust to use all available bandwidth, if
necessary, to achieve quality and current motion levels.
The Quality, IPS and Resolution settings will change
according to the compression method you select. However,
you may change these settings, if desired. The default
settings are:
MPEG4 CBR and MPEG4 ABR
 Quality: 4096 kbps
 IPS: 30
 Resolution: Full D1
MPEG4 VBR
 Quality: Lowest
 IPS: 30
 Resolution: Full D1
MPEG4 Adaptive
 Quality: Lowest
 IPS: 30
 Resolution: QCIF
Quality The highest quality and therefore the highest amount of
required bandwidth occurs with MPEG4 VBR. The lowest
quality and therefore the lowest amount of required
bandwidth occurs with MPEG4 CBR.
IPS Number of images processed per second. The smoothness
of video footage is directly related to the number of images
per second. Images will be smoother at higher IPS rates.

DVN 100-NET Quad View Spot Monitor Feature

The DVN 100-NET Quad View feature enables any DVN 100-NET in decoder
mode to display a view of up to four MPEG4 cameras from a DVN 5000 or other
DVN 100-NET server (in encoder mode) on a single spot monitor.
A spot monitor configured for quad view mode displays four equal quadrants, with
each quadrant displaying a particular camera view. See Figure 3-2.

Figure 3-2: Quad View Architecture with DVN 100-NET Decoder

NOTES
 Video sources are not limited to cameras connected to a DVN 5000, as
shown in Figure 3-2. A DVN 100-NET in encoder mode can also be used as a
video source.
 The Quad View feature can also be configured using the SiteManager client
software. Refer to the VisionPocket and SiteManager Software User Manual
for more information.
 The Quad View feature does not support audio, on screen display text, and
camera cycling on a spot monitor. However, these features are supported in
single view mode.

 When using the Quad View feature, we strongly recommend limiting each
camera to CIF resolution at 30 Frames Per Second (FPS) (or 4CIF resolution
at a maximum of 10 FPS). Increasing the resolution and/or FPS will overload
the DVN 100-NET CPU, which will delay the time it takes to display the video.
When viewing a single video stream, you may use 4CIF at a higher FPS.
 Camera video compressed with Wavelet or Enpacta codecs are not
supported in quad view mode – only video compressed with the MPEG4
codec can be viewed in this mode. If you add a video source that uses
Wavelet or Enpacta compression to a quad view quadrant, the spot monitor
will display only a black background.

 To configure the DVN 100-NET Quad View feature:

1. Access the Client Setup page. See “Client (Decoder Mode)” on page 3-17.
2. In the Decoders drop-down list, select 4 and click Apply.
3. Configure each AutoConnect Setup page for each camera that will be
displayed on the spot monitor connected to the DVN 100-NET decoder. See
“Autoconnection” on page 3-18.
4. Click Apply to save your changes on each AutoConnect Setup page you
configure.
The Autoconnection list (from top to bottom) determines the quadrants to
which the cameras will be assigned. On the spot monitor, quadrants are
numbered as follows:

1 2
3 4

For example, the camera assigned to the first Autoconnection configuration

item in the list will be assigned to quadrant 1, the camera assigned to the
second Autoconnection configuration item in the list will be assigned to
quadrant 2, and so on.
5. Click Save and apply to save your changes.

Configuration DVN 100-NET Installation and Operation Manual

Before configuring the date and time settings of the DVN 100-NET, determine
whether you will synchronize the DVN’s clock with an NTP server or manually
configure the date and time settings. If you synchronize the DVN’s clock with an
NTP server, you do not have to manually set the current date and time, assign a time
zone, or configure the DST settings, since the DVN’s clock settings will be
configured according to the date and time settings of the NTP server.
To manually configure the DVN 100-NET’s clock settings, set the 
DVN 100-NET’s current date and time (see “Manual setting” on page 3-24), set the
time zone (see “Timezone and DST” on page 3-26), and set the DST settings, if
applicable (see “Timezone and DST” on page 3-26).
To synchronize the DVN’s clock with an NTP server, enter the NTP server
information according to “NTP Client” on page 3-25.
To view the current date and time configuration settings, click Date and time.

NTP Client
NTP, or Network Time Protocol, enables the clocks of two or more DVN units to
stay synchronized, which is important when transmitting real-time video and audio
data across a network. Units can be synchronized by querying a server on the
network. Because they base their clocks on the same source, they remain
synchronized.
The NTP Client setup section allows you to synchronize the DVN 100-NET unit
with a server on the network simply by entering the server’s IP address and port.

USING THE PTZ FUNCTIONS

Pan/Tilt/Zoom
When a DVN 100-NET unit is connected to a PTZ capable camera, you can use the
VisionWeb software to control the camera position and zoom level.
The PTZ function is accessed simply by using the PTZ and zoom controls on the
Main window. In addition, you can adjust the camera focus and the amount of light
entering the camera (iris) to optimize the picture quality.

 To use the PTZ function:

1. Pan or tilt the camera by clicking the appropriate PTZ control arrows in
order to achieve the required camera position.

2. Zoom in and out by using the Zoom control + and - buttons respectively.
3. Adjust the camera focus if required by using the focus control + and -
buttons.
4. Adjust the amount of light entering through the cameras lens by using the iris
control + and - buttons, as required.

Using Presets and Tours

VisionWeb can be used to move the camera to a pre-set position or tour via the
preset and tours selection pads respectively.
 A preset (1-8) results in the camera moving to the pre-defined position that
corresponds to the selected preset.
 A tour (1 - 4) results in the camera shifting between the pre-defined camera
preset sequences.
Presets and tours do not apply to fixed cameras.

USING AUDIO
The DVN 100-NET provides up to two audio channels, allowing you to listen to encoded
audio signals using VisionWeb. Listening to audio with VisionWeb requires the following:
 An audio input device connected to the DVN 100-NET unit’s audio port (see “Cable
Connections” on page 2-2).
 DVN 100-NET configured as an encoder (see “Server (Encoder Mode)” on
page 3-10).
 Channels 1 and/or 2 enabled on the Audio setup page (see “Audio (Encoder Mode)”
on page 3-16).
 PC-compatible speakers properly connected to the workstation running VisionWeb.

To listen to audio via VisionWeb, click an audio channel number. An orange light appears in
the upper-left corner of the button to indicate that the audio channel is enabled. For stereo
sound (if supported by the audio input device), enable both audio channels.

Use your speaker’s volume controls to adjust the volume of all audio channels
simultaneously.
