Civics and Culture – Grade 4
SY 2017 - 2018

I. Objective: At the end of a 50 minute period, the learners should be able


to:
1. discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the location of the
country;
2. show praparedness and readiness during calamities by conducting
an earthquake drill; and
3. suggest ways on how to avoid negative effects of calamities.

II. Topic: Geographical Challenges Faced by the Country


Materials: PowerPoint Presentation
Video Presentation
Textbook: The Filipino Odyssey, Ailene Baisa-Julian, Nestor S. Lontoc

III. Procedure
A. Motivation

The teacher will show a pictures of the effects of Typhoon Yolanda to the
Philippines.
a. How do you feel after seeing the pictures?
b. Have you experienced a similar calamity?
c. Why do you think our country has been experiencing such calamities?

B. Presentation of Objectives, EQ and new lesson.

The teacher will relate the picture to the topic about the geographocal
challenges faced the by the country.

C. Discussion

1. Effects of geography
- Positive and negative effects of the location of the Philippines
2. Geographical challenges in our country
- Earthquake
- Volcanic Eruption
- Typhoon
3. The teacher will show the learners a video clip of the different geographical
Challenges

4. Perform earthquake drill (duck, cover, hold)

a. Does our country’s location affect the people’s lives? What are the positive
and negative effects?
b. Can you cite a recent event related to our country facing a geographical
challenge? What happened?
c. What should be the proper attitude of people in facing these calamaties?
D. Application
Group Work/Discussion

Each growth community will go to their gesignated area to discuss the effects
of typhoon, flood, earthquake and landslide, and fire by completing the idea
organizer. They will list down suggestions on how to be ready in facing these
calamities.
