World History (Horn/Ohl-Shaw)

A Socratic seminar is a discussion based

on a text that promotes collective critical
thinking within the classroom.
Participants listen intently to the
comments and ideas of their peers,
reflect on that discussion, and then share
their own thoughts and ideas that build
off of those of their peers. In regard to
Bloom’s Taxonomy, a Socratic seminar
targets the top half of the pyramid of
thinking and learning.

Guidelines for a Socratic Seminar

1. Talk to each other, not just the teacher.
2. Refer to evidence from your texts to support your ideas.
3. Ask questions if you do not understand what someone has said, or you can paraphrase what another
student has said for clarification (“I think you said this; is that right?)
4. Be accountable for your partner and
5. You do not need to raise your hand to speak, but please pay attention to how much you have spoken
in relation to other students.
6. Do not interrupt.
7. Don’t put down the ideas of another student. Without judging the student you disagree with, state
your alternate interpretation or ask a follow-up questions to help clarify the idea.
8. Use the fire seat!

Guiding Questions to Consider
 Is revolution worth it?

 From whose point of view are we measuring worth?

 Are political matters in these countries better or worse after their revolutions?

 Were different strategies of these revolutions more or less effective than others? In which ways?

 Has government changed overall in these countries since their revolutions?

 What made these revolutions “revolutionary”?
