Cinco de Mayo is a celebration on May 5. The date celebrates the
probable Mexican Army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.[1][2]
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo celebration has a different
significance. The date is associated with the celebration of Mexican- American culture, especially in areas with large Mexican-American populations. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle is more ceremonial, including military parades.
Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music
performances and street festivals. But, for a lot of Mexicans, May 5 is not a special day: It is not a federal holiday, so offices, banks and stores are open. Many people believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, but this event is celebrated on September 16th.
In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their
classrooms and cook some simple Mexican food.
