How To Help Speedup Web Browsing with Google’s Public DNS

DNS (Domain Name System) translates website IP addresses

to names that are easy to remember. Behind
every “anywebsite.com” there is an IP number associated with
it. Chances are you’re using your Internet Service Provider’s
DNS server, and sometimes they can be slow at translating the
IP addresses, thus making pages load slow.
We’ll be taking a look at other DNS alternatives, then wrap it
up by showing you how to test the speeds of them versus your
ISPs and find out which works fastest for you. To start, here
we take a look at adding Google Public DNS to your system.

For this tutorial we’ll take a look at setting it up using a Cisco

Linksys E2000 Wireless Router and in Windows 7 TCP/IP
Settings. If you own a different router the interface will be
different, but the steps are essentially the same.
Add Google Public DNS to a Router
1. First we’ll take a look at adding Google Public DNS to a
Linksys router. Open your default browser and enter your
router’s IP address in the address bar. For most Cisco Linksys
routers the IP is 192.168.1.1 – if you have a different router
consult the documentation or check the manufacturer’s
website to find out what it is.
2. Then you’ll be prompted to enter in the User Name and
Password for the router and click OK. If you’re not sure what
the password is…again turn to it’s documentation.

3. Then under the Basic settings under Network Setup and the
DHCP Server Settings section enter the following into the
Static DNS 1&2 fields.

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4
It doesn’t matter which order you enter them in, just make
sure you’re using the correct numbers. Then at the bottom of
the screen make sure to click Save Settings.
4. Then a new page will come up verifying the configuration
changes have been set…click Continue.

5. Now click on the Status Tab and under Internet Connection

You’ll see the DNS settings have been successfully changed.
Add Google Public DNS to Windows
If you’re not using a router, you can add Google Public DNS to
Your Windows 7 PC in the TCP/IP Settings.

1. Click Start and type network and sharing into the Search
box then select Network and Sharing Center under Control
Panel.
2. When the center opens, click on the Change adapter
settings link in the left panel.
3. Then right-click Local Area Connection and then
Properties.

4. The Local Area Connection Properties window opens…click

on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to high light it,
then click Properties.
5. In the next window click the radio button next to Use the
following DNS server addresses and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
in the Preferred and Alternate DNS Server – again in either
order. If you want you can also check the box next to Validate
settings upon exit then click OK.
6. If you entered in the DNS server settings properly,
Windows Network Diagnostics Troubleshooting won’t find a
problem. Just close out of the Window.
7. Now you can use the Command Prompt to verify the
settings took. Click Start and type cmdinto the search box and
hit Enter.

8. When the Command Prompt opens type in the following

command:

ipconfig /all
9. Scroll down in the results and look for DNS Servers and you
should see the Google DNS numbers you typed in above.

After changing the DNS Server, you might notice the pages
load faster, or you might not notice any difference – or even
worse slower performance. If you do notice websites loading
slower after making the change, just go back into the settings
and change them back. Your results will vary…so make sure to
check back as we take a look at setting up OpenDNS, then how
to test them all to find out which is the fastest.

Configure your network settings to use Google Public DNS

When you use Google Public DNS, you are changing your DNS "switchboard" operator from
your ISP to Google Public DNS.

In most cases, the IP addresses used by your ISP's domain name servers are automatically set by
your ISP via the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). To use Google Public DNS,
you need to explicitly change the DNS settings in your operating system or device to use the
Google Public DNS IP addresses. The procedure for changing your DNS settings varies
according to operating system and version (Windows, Mac or Linux) or the device (computer,
phone, or router). We give general procedures here that might not apply for your OS or device;
please consult your vendor documentation for authoritative information.

Caution: We recommend that only users who are proficient with configuring operating system settings
make these changes.

Important: Before you start

Before you change your DNS settings to use Google Public DNS, be sure to write down the
current server addresses or settings on a piece of paper. It is very important that you keep these
numbers for backup purposes, in case you need to revert to them at any time.

We also recommend that you print this page, in the event that you encounter a problem and need
to refer to these instructions.

Google Public DNS IP addresses

The Google Public DNS IP addresses (IPv4) are as follows:

 8.8.8.8

 8.8.4.4
The Google Public DNS IPv6 addresses are as follows:

 2001:4860:4860::8888

 2001:4860:4860::8844

You can use either address as your primary or secondary DNS server. You can specify both
addresses, but do not specify one address as both primary and secondary.

You can configure Google Public DNS addresses for either IPv4 or IPv6 connections, or both.

Change your DNS servers settings

Because the instructions differ between different versions/releases of each operating system, we
only give one version as an example. If you need specific instructions for your operating
system/version, please consult your vendor's documentation. You may also find answers on
our user group.

Many systems allow you to specify multiple DNS servers, to be contacted in a priority order. In
the following instructions, we provide steps to specify only the Google Public DNS servers as
the primary and secondary servers, to ensure that your setup will correctly use Google Public
DNS in all cases.

Note: Depending on your network setup, you may need administrator/root privileges to change these
settings.

Windows

DNS settings are specified in the TCP/IP Properties window for the selected network
connection.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Windows 7

1. Go to the Control Panel.

2. Click Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

3. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
 To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection > Properties.

 To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection >Properties.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
4. Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet
Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then
click Properties.

5. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them
down for future reference, and remove them from this window.

6. Click OK.

7. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred
DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.

8. Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers:

 For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

 For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.

9. Restart the connection you selected in step 3.

10. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

11. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.

Mac OS

DNS settings are specified in the Network window.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Mac OS 10.5

1. Click Apple > System Preferences > Network.

2. If the lock icon in the lower left-hand corner of the window is locked, click the icon to make changes, and
when prompted to authenticate, enter your password.

3. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:

 To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, select Built-In Ethernet, and click Advanced.

 To change the settings for a wireless connection, select Airport, and click Advanced.
4. Select the DNS tab.

5. Click + to replace any listed addresses with, or add, the Google IP addresses at the top of the list:

 For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

 For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.

6. Click Apply > OK.

7. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

8. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.

Linux

In most modern Linux distributions, DNS settings are configured through Network Manager.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Ubuntu

1. Click System > Preferences > Network Connections.

2. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:

 To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, select the Wired tab, then select your network
interface in the list. It is usually called eth0.

 To change the settings for a wireless connection, select the Wireless tab, then select the appropriate
wireless network.

3. Click Edit, and in the window that appears, select the IPv4 Settings or IPv6 Settings tab.

4. If the selected method is Automatic (DHCP), open the dropdown and select Automatic (DHCP)
addresses only instead. If the method is set to something else, do not change it.

5. In the DNS servers field, enter the Google Public DNS IP addresses, separated by a space:

 For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

 For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.

6. Click Apply to save the change. If you are prompted for a password or confirmation, type the password or
provide confirmation.

7. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

8. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.
If your distribution doesn't use Network Manager, your DNS settings are specified in
/etc/resolv.conf.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on a Debian server

1. Edit /etc/resolv.conf:

sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf

2. If any nameserver lines appear, write down the IP addresses for future reference.
3. Replace the nameserver lines with, or add, the following lines:

For IPv4:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

For IPv6:

nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8888
nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8844

4. Save and exit.

5. Restart any Internet clients you are using.

6. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

Additionally, if you are using DHCP client software that overwrites the settings in
/etc/resolv.conf, you will need to set up the client accordingly by editing the client's
configuration file.

Example: Configuring DHCP client sofware on a Debian server

1. Back up /etc/resolv.conf:

sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.auto

2. Edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf:
sudo vi /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

3. If there is a line containing domain-name-servers, write down the IP addresses for future
reference.
4. Replace that line with, or add, the following line:

For IPv4:

prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4;

For IPv6:

prepend domain-name-servers 2001:4860:4860::8888, 2001:4860:4860::8844;

5. Save and exit.

6. Restart any Internet clients you are using.

7. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

Routers

Every router uses a different user interface for configuring DNS server settings; we provide only
a generic procedure below. For more information, please consult your router documentation.

Note: Some ISPs hard-code their DNS servers into the equipment they provide; if you are using such a
device, you will not be able to configure it to use Google Public DNS. Instead, you can configure each of
the computers connected to the router, as described above.

To change your settings on a router:

1. In your browser, enter the IP address to access the router's administration console.

2. When prompted, enter the password to access network settings.

3. Find the screen in which DNS server settings are specified.

4. If there are IP addresses specified in the fields for the primary and seconday DNS servers, write them
down for future reference.

5. Replace those addresses with the Google IP addresses:

 For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

 For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.

6. Save and exit.

7. Restart your browser.

8. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

Mobile or other devices

DNS servers are typically specified under advanced wi-fi settings. However, as every mobile
device uses a different user interface for configuring DNS server settings, we provide only a
generic procedure below. For more information, please consult your mobile provider's
documentation.

To change your settings on a mobile device:

1. Go to the screen in which wi-fi settings are specified.

2. Find the screen in which DNS server settings are specified.

3. If there are IP addresses specified in the fields for the primary and seconday DNS servers, write them
down for future reference.

4. Replace those addresses with the Google IP addresses:

 For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

 For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.

5. Save and exit.

6. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Test your new settings below.

Test your new settings

To test that the Google DNS resolver is working:

1. From your browser, type in a hostname (such as http://www.google.com/). If it resolves

correctly, bookmark the page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If both of these tests work,
everything is working correctly. If not, go to step 2.
2. From your browser, type in a fixed IP address. You can use http://18.62.0.96/ (which points
to the website http://www.eecs.mit.edu/) as the URL.1 If this works correctly, bookmark the
page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If these tests work (but step 1 fails), then there is a
problem with your DNS configuration; check the steps above to make sure you have configured
everything correctly. If these tests do not work, go to step 3.

3. Roll back the DNS changes you made and run the tests again. If the tests still do not work, then there is a
problem with your network settings; contact your ISP or network administrator for assistance.

1
Google thanks MIT for granting permission to use this URL for the purposes of testing web
connectivity.

If you encounter any problems after setting Google Public DNS as your resolver, please run
the diagnostic procedure.

Switch back to your old DNS settings

If you had not previously configured any customized DNS servers, to switch back to your old
settings, in the window in which you specified the Google IP addresses, select the option to
enable obtaining DNS server addresses automatically, and/or delete the Google IP addresses.
This will revert your settings to using your ISP's default servers.

If you need to manually specify any addresses, use the procedures above to specify the old IP
addresses.

If necessary, restart your system.

Why does DNS matter?

The Domain Name System (DNS) protocol is an important part of the web's infrastructure, serving as the
Internet's phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex
pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be
performing hundreds of lookups a day.

Try it out
 Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers.
 Or, read our configuration instructions (IPv6 addresses supported too).
If you decide to try Google Public DNS, your client programs will perform all DNS lookups
using Google Public DNS.
Looking for Cloud DNS?
Public DNS is only a name resolver. If you are looking for a high-volume, programmable, authoritative
name server using Google's infrastructure, try Google's Cloud DNS.

Why should you try Google Public DNS?

How To Find a Faster DNS Service with Namebench

by MYSTI CGEEK on MARCH 1, 2011

 3

 3.56k

We previously looked at how to add Google Public DNS to

your home network, and also how to setup OpenDNS on your
Router. Today we’re going to test them and a few others to
help determine which is fastest.
1. Download and run Namebench from the Google Code
site…no installation is required. The cool thing about
Namebench is it’s cross-platform and will run on Windows,
Mac, and Linux.
2. When you first kick off Namebench, you’ll see OpenDNS,
option to include Google Public DNS, and your local IP DNS
server addresses. According to the developers, the default
options should be fine for most users. Just click on Start
benchmark.

Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure you or anyone

on your home network isn’t downloading large files,
watching Netflix, or using a torrent client before running the
test.
3. Wait while the scans take place…about 5 minutes in our
tests. After it’s done your default browser opens up with the
results.
4. There are charts and graphs that include detailed
information on different tests that were run.
5. If you run Namebench consecutively there will undoubtedly
be different results. The developers advise to go with the first
test you run. The more times you run it, you’re repeating the
queries and will skew the results to the name server that is
closest to your location.

6. One way to work around this is to change between the Alexa

and your favorite browser history source.

7. After switching to the Alexa dataset from browsing history,

we got a result that was more comparable to the first time we
ran it.
8. Namebench also includes a feature to export the results to a
comma separated Values (CSV).
If you’ve been experimenting with different DNS
services, Namebench is a helpful utility for finding the fastest
one. There are other free DNS speed testing utilities out there
and we’ll be taking a look at them in future articles.

How To Add Watermarks to Word Documents in 2007 & 2010

Sometimes when you create a document in Microsoft Word
you need to add a watermark that shows in the background to
identify the document’s status. Here we show you how easy it
is to add and customize them.

1. With your Word document open click on the Page layout tab
on the Ribbon.

2. Then click Watermark in the Page Background section.

3. Here you can choose one from the gallery that fits the needs
of your document.

4. Click on the one you want to use and it will show up in the
background like in this example where we selected
Confidential.
5. If you need to remove the watermark, at the bottom of the
same menu click on Remove Watermark and the document
will go back to normal with no background.

6. Another thing you might want to do is create a custom

watermark such as your company logo or other image. If that
is the case, select Custom Watermark.
7. In the Printed Watermark screen click Picture Watermark,
then click the Select Picture button.

8. Browse to the picture you want to use and double-click on

it. In this example I’m using a Windows logo, but of course
you want to select the one you want.
9. Here is the result of the image I picked…it seems a bit too
light. This might happen to you as well so you just need to
experiment a bit.
10. One way to make the watermark show up better is to go
back into the Custom Watermark settings and uncheck
Washout, maybe change the Scale percentage, then click OK.
11. Here is the result after the changes we made…and in this
case it’s a bit too pronounced in the background…like I said,
experimentation is key.
12. You can change the default text watermarks in the settings
as well. Click Text watermark and you can change the
Language, Font, Size, Color, and Layout between either
Diagonal or Horizontal…again experimentation is the key.
13. Here is an example of creating a custom watermark.
If you need to add Watermarks to your documents, this
basically covers it. Just be careful with when using images as
you can make a document really unreadable and
unprofessional looking. Remember, the boss won’t be happy is
you flub up your TPS reports!

How to delete your Flash cache
by ROSS MCKI LLOP on SEPTEMBER 16, 2010

 577
 3
 1

As you almost certainly know, Flash is a huge part of the web.

Nearly every streaming video site uses it. Facebook uses it.
Many of the ads you see on the web are actually Flash videos.

What you may not know, is that when you clear your browsers
history, cache, passwords etc – you’re still leaving behind
traces of your browsing history – in the form of the “Flash
cache”. This tutorial will show you how to delete that cache –
or just individual sites from it.
While this process used to be a bit more complicated, Adobe
(the folks who develop Flash) have made it considerably more
easy in one of the more recent versions of Flash.

1. To get started, simply visit this page. This will take you to
the Settings Manager for the Flash Player. It should also
take you directly to the Website Storage
Settings section. If it doesn’t, simply click the Website
Storage Settings button (see screenshot below) to bring
that section up.
2. Towards the bottom of that window, you’ll see a section
with a list of all the sites that have leftsome piece of Flash
on your computer. To delete just one of the sites in the list,
select it by clicking on it once, and then click the Delete
website button.

3. You’ll be prompted to confirm that you wish to delete that

site – click the Confirm button.
4. If you want to delete all of the sites that Flash has saved
(the history/site-name itself, and often some Flash content)
– click the Delete all sites button.

5. Again, you’ll be prompted to confirm this action.

Click Confirm.

6. And now your computer is free of the history of sites that

you have visted with Flash content.
7. That’s it! It is of course important to note that the next time
you visit a site that you had previously deleted, it will re-
appear in you Flash history list.

Dependency Walker
Dependency Walker is a free utility that scans any 32-bit or
64-bit Windows module (exe, dll, ocx, sys, etc.) and builds a
hierarchical tree diagram of all dependent modules. For each
module found, it lists all the functions that are exported by
that module, and which of those functions are actually being
called by other modules. Another view displays the minimum
set of required files, along with detailed information about
each file including a full path to the file, base address, version
numbers, machine type, debug information, and more.
Dependency Walker is also very useful for troubleshooting
system errors related to loading and executing modules.
Dependency Walker detects many common application
problems such as missing modules, invalid modules,
import/export mismatches, circular dependency errors,
mismatched machine types of modules, and module
initialization failures.

or

You might be bored of setting your homepage again and again when someone changes
it in a net cafe or on your PC. But now you can stop all those and make your home

1. Right click on the Internet Explorer/Mozilla Firefox shortcut icon on
your desktop and select Properties
2. In the target field you will see somewhat like
“C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE” for Internet Explorer &
“C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” for Mozilla Firefox, which is
nothing but the path of the executable file on you PC.
3. Now to the end of it you have to add the URL of the website(say orkut)you want
to make as your Home page, so that it changes as
“C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE” www.orkut.com

How To Fix Major USB Problems
Tanmay Last Updated On: Feb 9th, 2015 Problems And Solutions 21 Comments

USB is one of the most useful accessories for a computer (Desktop or

Laptop). If you use it frequently, you should face various type of problems
with your USB stick. The most common problems are “USB Device Not
Recognized”, “Windows was unable to complete the format”, “The device
cannot start. [code 10]”, “Problem ejecting the USB mass storage device”
etc.

However, the problems with your USB drive can arise in various forms. Here
we have tried to solve the common problems with USB drives which people
generally face.

How to Fix “USB Device Not Recognized” in Windows

One of the common and annoying problem with USB drive in Windows is the
“USB Device Not Recognized” popup message when you plug in the device
into your USB port. Here are several methods to fix this problem so that you
can try another one if any fix does not work for you.
Method 1: Turn Off Your Computer

The first and simple fix of the problem “USB Device Not Recognized” is
shutting down your desktop or laptop for about fifteen minutes and then
turn you computer on and insert the USB device. This some time fix the
problem automatically. But it is not always possible to turn off your
computer whenever you get the error with your device. Therefore, continue
to the next methods and fix the problem permanently.

Method 2: Scan for Hardware Changes

If you still face the same problem after restarting computer, you can try this
method by performing a quick scan for hardware changes. This sometime
automatically fix the issues with the USB drives if they are not recognized by
your system. You can do it from the device manages section of your
Windows system.

Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager. In the device manager
window, right-click on “Computer” and select “Scan for hardware changes”.
This action will try to automatically fix the issue when your USB device gets
flagged as an unknown device.

However, if still this method does not work for you, you can try the next
method.

Method 3: Update USB Device Drive

One of the common way by which the problem “USB Device Not Recognized”
gets fixed is updating device driver. Open the device manager and expand
“Other devices”. The unknown devices are listed there. Find out the
“Universal Serial Bus Controller” entry, right-click on it and select
“Properties” – the “Properties” window opens up.

Now head to the “Driver” tab and click the “Update Driver” button.

This will update the device driver automatically. Check that whether your
USB drive is recognized by your system or not. If not, follow the registry
tweak below.

Method 4: Registry Tweak to Fix “USB Device Not Recognized” Issue

If none of the above methods works for you, try the last and most reliable
way to fix the issue – the registry tweak method.

Open Windows registry editor (Press Windows Key + R and type “regedit”
without the quotes into the Run command box and hit the Enter) and
navigate to the following path.
HKEY_LOCAL_Machine > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > USB

If the USB key does not exist into the list then create a new key USB under
“Services”. Now create a new DWORD value under the key that you’ve just
created.

Keep the “USB” key selected and right-click on the blank space at the right
pane, choose “New > DWORD value from the context menu.

Rename this newly created DWORD value as “DisableSelectiveSuspend”.

Now, right-click on “DisableSelectiveSuspend” and select “Modify”. Put 1 in
“Value data” field and click OK.

Reboot your computer and re-insert your USB device into the port. This
should fix the issue.

Method 5: Fix Damaged Hardware

If none of the above works then it is issue with your hardware. Check your
USB device to another computer and another USB stick to your current
computer and decide which one is damaged. Repair or replace that one and
continue the using of USB devices at your desktop or laptop.

How to Fix “Windows was Unable to Complete the Format” Problem

Generally we format USB drive by right-clicking on the removable disk drive

from the Windows Explorer. All we need to format the disk is to select the
“Format” option from the context menu. But in many cases Windows can’t
format the USB disk and returns a message like “Windows was unable to
complete the format”. This error happens when your computer is infected by
virus generally. It is embarrassing when you really need to format your USB
stick.

However, there is way to format USB drive in command prompt and hence
you can fix the issue. Here is how to format USB device from command
prompt in Windows operating systems.

Open command prompt and type the following command.

Format <USB drive letter> /FS:<File System>

Replace <USB drive letter> with your USB drive letter and <File System>
with your desired file system e.g FAT32 or NTFS

The above command will format the USB stick thoroughly. If you want to
perform a quick format then run the following command.
Format <USB drive letter> /FS:<File System> /q

Now, insert the USB stick to your computer and hit Enter. The status will be
shown in the command prompt screen.

How to Fix “The device Cannot Start. [code 10]” Error

Another issue with USB devices is often faced in Windows system is error
code 10. When you plug in the USB device in Windows XP computer it shows
an error message like “This device cannot start. [Code 10]“. To fix this
problem follow the steps which are listed below.

1. Go to Start > Run and type“Devmgmt.msc” without the quotes into the Run command
box and click OK.
2. The “Device Manager” dialog box will appear. Expand the “Universal Serial Bus
Controllers” from the left side.
3. Right-click on “USB Mass Storage Device” and select “Properties”.
4. Under the “General” tab, you will see the “Device status” (make sure that your USB
device is connected).
5. If the device status says that there is “This device cannot start. [Code 10]” error or
something like that then you have to uninstall all of your USB Controller.

6. To uninstall the USB controller, right-click on each of the USB controller under “Universal
Serial Bus Controllers” and click on “Uninstall”.
7. Restart your computer. The USB controllers will be automatically re-installed.

The above method should fix the Code 10 error issue.

How to Safely Remove USB Device Without Any Error

Generally, it happens with you so often that you want to remove your USB
by clicking on “”afely Remove Hardware” option from the system tray and it
gives an error message like “The Device Generic volume cannot be stopped
right now. Try stopping the device later”. If you ignore this error message
and remove USB drive, your USB drive may get damaged. To fix this
problem you can use a free application Unlocker which helps you remove the
USB drive safely.

Download Unlocker 1.8.7 and install it on your system. Now, right-click on

the USB drive from the Windows Explorer and select “Unlocker”. An
“Unlocker” window will appear. Click on “Unlock All” to stop all running
programs which are related to the USB device.
Now safely remove USB device by click on “Safely Remove Hardware” option
from the system tray.

Clone Your Existing Operating

System Into Virtual Machine
Tanmay Last Updated On: Jan 16th, 2015 Windows Leave A Comment

Being a simple computer user or a web developer, you need to play with
your computer several times. But making experiments with your computer
may cause a poor performance. In that case, having another instance would
be better for experiment purpose only to keep your original OS fresh and
clean. It is possible to keep different operating systems into one computer
but switching between them is a tedious job. But with virtualization, you can
clone your existing operating system into a virtual machines.

Virtualization is a simple and interesting technology that allows you run

multiple Operating Systems on the same computer (you might also like to
read how to Change Default Operating System in Windows Boot Menu). Let’s
say that you are running Windows XP on your computer. But you can run
multiple Operating systems like Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Mandriva
Linux into the virtual machine just like other Windows applications.

There are several applications like Windows Virtual PC, Virtual Box, VMware
Workstation which creates a virtual machine within your current operating
system. Every application has their own method to create the virtual
environment and to install several operating systems into that. But what I’ll
discuss in this article is that you can create an exact copy of your existing
operating system and use it into your favorite virtualization software.

Installing Virtual Machine into Windows

What need to do at first is to create a virtual environment at your running
operating system (Windows). You can download and install from anyone of
these: Windows Virtual PC, Virtual Box, VMware Workstation. Once you’re
done follow the next step to prepare the virtual copy of your current
operating system

Clone Your Current Operating System for Virtual Machines

By cloning your existing operating system you can reuse it into your virtual
machines as same as you do at your current one. You don’t need to re-
install your favorite applications.

Here is how to create a copy of your current operating system to use it into
the virtual machine.

Turn your Existing Computer into Virtual Machine

Once, the process of converting an existing hard drive into a virtual hard
drive was an expensive task. But now, there is a free and simple utility
released by Microsoft to clone an existing operating system for Virtual
Machine.

A tiny utility Disk2vhd, developed by the Microsoft engineers, allows your

convert an existing drive to the virtual hard drive (VHD). You can download
it from here. This software does not even need any installation. Just extract
the zipped file and double click on the executive file to get started with it.

Cloning Hard Drive Using Disk2VHD

After double-clicking on the exe file, it immediately shows all the drives from
your computer which can be converted into VHD. Select the drive you wish
and then click on “Create”. It will start converting your drive in a VHD file,
even if it is being used by any other applications.

Once completed, you can run it into any free desktop applications like
Windows Virtual Machine,Virtual Box or VMware Workstation. If you are
running with Windows 7 then you can also mount the converted file as a
hard drive (read how to mount any folder as virtual drive).

Conclusion:
The proper utilization of Disk2vhd has filled the expectation and reduced the
complexity and time of virtualization. You can enjoy the benefits of
virtualization with this tool.

How to Install Android 4.4 KitKat as a Virtual Machine in Your Computer?
Posted by Neeraj RawatLabels: Android, Linux, Microsoft, Operating System, Softwares

If you have been in touch with us via our official Facebook page then you must have noticed my Virtual
Android Screen and now I got the time to finally write a detailed tutorial for you. At times for such long
installation tutorials, I plan to switch to Video Blogging to save more time. Don't get surprised if
anytime, you get a post where you will get to know about a new version launch of Experts Galaxy in
video mode.

Anyhow lets get back to the installation of Android OS as a virtual machine in your Linux or PC. If you
are regular here then by now, you should be familiar with the procedure of installing an Operating
System in a virtual environment using VirtualBox. Now, I am sharing the procedure to install a Virtual
OS using VMware product with an example installation of Android.

Download the free VMware Player software using the link below:

Click Here to See the Complete Download List of VMware Products

Install the software as we install any software in our OS be it Windows or your favorite Linux distro.
Now we need to install the Android OS but for that we need an ISO image for the same. Please
download the latest or your desired Android installation from the link provided below:

Click Here to Download the Android 4.4 ISO

Or

Click Here to Download different versions of Android ISO

I will be using Android 4.4 RC 2 for this tutorial and now lets begin with it.

1) After installing VMware Player, please click on Player>> File>> New Virtual Machine as shown below:

2) New Virtual Machine Wizard screen will be there, simply browse the downloaded ISO and click next.
3) Now name your new virtual machine and it can be anything. After that click on next

4) Specify the disk capacity of your new virtual machine. I use the first option for better performance
and you can also change the size of the disk while installing any other virtual OS.
5) On the next screen, you can customize the hardware for your virtual machine like increasing the
memory or changing the type of Network Adapter.

6) Once you click on finish then the virtual machine will start with the Android's boot screen. Select the
install Android to hard disk option and press enter.
7) You will see, please select a partition screen and let it be as shown below.

8) On the next screen, please select the new option using the arrow keys on the keyboard as we need
to partition our virtual hard disk and press enter.
9) Now we need to decide if we wish to make a primary or logical partition. I will use primary
partitioning scheme in this tutorial, treating it as an MBR disk. Do remember that a hard disk with MBR
type of partitioning can have either "4 primary partitions" or "3 primary and one extended partition".
You may search for MBR vs GPT partitioning scheme in Google to know more.

10) Please specify the new partition size, simply start typing the numbers to specify the size without
using backspace or delete key to delete the size displayed on the screen
11) It will ask you for the partition location, please select the beginning of the disk

12) On the next screen, you will see the created partition. It will already be selected along with the
bootable option at the bottom. Simply press enter to mark the partition as bootable.
13) Now, please select the free space and then repeat the procedure (Don't mark other partitions as
bootable)New>> Primary>> Beginning>> Free Space>> Until you create 4 primary partitions this way
though one bootable partition is enough to install it. Android is a Linux based OS however here its
installation is different than a normal Linux Installation.

14) Once all the partitions are created then please select the write option and press enter. It will ask
you to confirm it by typing yes, so please follow the instructions.

15) Once you see the message "Wrote partition table on the disk", you may select the print option to
check it and then select the quit option to come back to installation screen.
16) Once you will be back on the blue screen then please select a partition to install Android. Let it be
sda1 as we made it the boot partition.

17) Please select a filesystem for sda1. Let it be ext3 as its a file system for Linux, the way we have
NTFS for Windows.
18) Select yes on the next screen as we are sure that we need to format the selected partition.

19) It will ask you if you wish to install GRUB or not which is a bootloader for Linux. Please select yes.
20) Please select yes as it says making /system be read-write is easier for debugging. Select no if you
know what are you doing.

21) It will start installing Android OS as desired.

22) Congratulations, your Android installation is complete. You should reboot your virtual machine to
configure your new Android which you have installed as Virtual Machine.

23) Here is the Android screen after installation.

24) Select a language for configuration

25) If it detects your net connection then well and good, else skip it.

26) I hope, you have switched to Gmail by now

27) Use your Google credentials to sign in

28) Do some basic configuration and then give a name to your virtual tablet
29) Next you see the welcome message

Finally, you configured the new Android installation as well

Now you can use and test the Android installation here. In this long post, you learnt to install a Virtual
Operating System in VMware Player which is a free software for non-commercial use. You could have
used any other virtualization software to install Android as guest OS. If you need to install
Linux or Windows as virtual machine then we have all the tutorials for the installation, just browser the
respective categories at the right hand side.

Let me share my setup for this post. I have used a Linux machine with VirtualBox, then a Windows 8.1
Enterprise version installed in VirtualBox. In Windows 8.1, I installed the free version of VMware Player
6.0 and then installed Android in it. This is the power of Virtualization and there are many companies
competing for the top position, VMware being the leader for now. I hope you enjoyed the installation
of your new Virtual Machine.

Posted by Neeraj RawatLabels: Computer Tips, Linux, Microsoft, Operating System
One of my friend has to give the semester practical for his Linux paper and he was asking how to install

a guest OS in his computer using virtualization software so that he can practice few commands as he

doesn`t want to dual boot his Windows system with Linux.

Well, incase of Linux you can simply run the distro using live cds but incase you need to install any

other OS inside your real operating system you can do that as well like Windows 7 inside XP. There are

many softwares and the most widely used are Virtual Box,VMware & Microsoft Virtual PC. Here I will

show you how to install a guest OS using virtual box, first of all install the latest version of Virtual Box

from the link below for your computer architecture

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Once you install the software, open it and follow the screen shots with instructions as shown below

First of all click on the new button

Then click next on the welcome screen

Type the OS name you are going to

install & select the appropriate choice from the options as it will help you in future to recognize

from multiple virtual OS installations

Select the RAM you would like to assign to the virtual OS

Select the boot hard disk here whether you would like to create a new virtual drive or would be

using the existing virtual drives incase you created earlier but as this is the first install select

create new hard disk & click next

After clicking next you will see the file type selection screen for the virtual disk, simply click next

without changing anything and after that in the hard disk storage type select dynamically

expanding storage reason is explained on the screen itself.

Now here select the virtual disk size for the guest OS
Click finish on the summary screen

Now on the left side select the OS

just now you configured & click start

Click next on the first run screen

Here select the optical drive for your main OS or if you are installing from an ISO click the yellow

icon to locate the file on your computer and click next.

On the new screen click add and select the ISO image you would like to install
Select the ISO name which got listed here

Now click next once we have finalised the installation media

Now click finish on the summary screen.

You have successfully configured

your virtual machine now the installation will start once you click finish and you can proceed like
you normally do any installation, incase you need to see how to install different OS you can see

using below links
