working individually. I will remind them to not work with a partner and to keep their eyes on
their own paper.
Engagement/Focus: Good morning class! Has anyone ever heard of Mad Libs? (Hold up none
book/ paper) It is a book full of different stories but there are some blanks, these blanks are
supposed to be filled in by the person reading! I am going to read one that I made on my own
(Read part of Mad Lib) Did you hear the big words that I used? Even though most of the
words I wrote did not make sense they still made the story fun! Today we are going to be
learning about those words that make stories fun. These words are called adjectives!

Explanation/Procedures: I will give Edna the worksheet ahead

1. We are going to start off the day by doing our very own Mad Lib today! But first, we of time so she understands what to

words are called adjectives. Adjectives are words that are used to describe nouns. Can
someone tell me what the definition of a noun is? When going over the lecture, I will
2. Hold up picture of a cheetah. What are some different words we can use to describe point to one of the sections on the

4. They can tell us what color something is. What word could we use for this cheetah? It
can be a color, a type of pattern? (wait for response) – WRITE ON BUBBLE – ask Have Edna’s partner write down the

5. Adjectives also tell us the size of a noun. What word is best to use for describing this longer to write.
cheetah? WRITE ON BUBBLE
6. They tell us how something feels. Even though we can’t touch the cheetah how do
you think it might feel if you were to pet it? WRITE ON BUBBLE
7. Adjectives can even tell us how many there of something. What adjective would we
use for how many when looking at the picture of the cheetah? WRITE ON BUBBLE
8. Adjectives also tell us how something may sound. How do you think this cheetah
sounds? Especially when it gets angry? WRITE ON BUBBLE
9. We can also use adjectives to describe how something behaves. What words can we
use to describe how cheetahs behave? WRITE ON BUBBLE
10. Now that we know all of the different ways we can use adjectives let’s make our
own Mad Lib! You are going to be work with the person sitting next to you and you
both will be filling in all of the blanks with adjectives.
11. The fun part about Mad Libs is that we do not read the story until after we fill in all Edna’s worksheet will have more
of the blanks. There is no limit to what kind of words we can use. Think of the complex sentences with larger
coolest colors, biggest numbers, and fun word to use. If you need help thinking of a words.
word raise your hand and I will help you. Remember, just think of any word, you do
not read the story first. Think of all the words we used to describe the cheetah.
12. I will do the first couple of sentences with you. (Read each sentence leaving a blank.
Then come up with words for them.)
13. Once you and your partner are finished, read your story out loud to each other.
Remember everyone will be talking so use your Level 2 voice. Once you and your
partner are completely done with reading, turn your Mad Lib face down so I can see
that you are done.
14. Once I can see that everyone is done, I will ask if a group wants to volunteer and read
their story out loud.
15. Now we are going to do a worksheet on our own. The Mad Lib was fun but for the
worksheet I want you to read the sentences carefully so you know can find the
adjective.
16. We will do the first one together. (Read sentence and tell the students where the
adjective is)

Extension/Elaboration: Edna’s worksheet will have larger,

Closure: I really appreciate the way you behaved today in class. Thank you for raising your
hand when you had a question and for working quietly with your partner. That made it easier
for the rest of the class to hear there partner. You all gave me excellent adjectives when
describing the cheetah. Someone tell me what an adjective is. Is there anything you have
questions about? Tomorrow we are going to be using what we learned today and learning
how to make our own sentences using adjectives to describe nouns.
