TASK 5: ACADEMIC WRITING

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Among the initiatives implemented by Ministry of Education to ensure quality of
teachers is Professional Learning Community (PLC). Implementation of PLC can improve
teacher professionalism through practice of collaborative to improve pupil’s achievement
and improve teachers’ skill. According to Rosenholtz, 1989; Little & McLaughlin, 1993;
DuFour, Eaker, & Many, 2006 , PLC stands for Professional Learning Community which
refers to a group of educators who are committed and works collaboratively as well as
ongoing in an inquiry or effort to accomplish better achievement for their pupils. Lesson
Study is a Japanese model of teaching improvement process in which a group of teachers
work together to focus on an identified area for development in their pupils' learning. Using
existing evidence, participants collaboratively research, plan, teach and observe a series
of lessons, using an ongoing discussion, input and reflection to track and refine their
interventions.

2.0 STRATEGIES OF LESSON STUDY

Lesson study can be a form of school based teacher professional development

program where teachers could carry out researches, develop and practice lesson that can
develop the pupils’ achievement. There are four strategies in carrying out effective Lesson
study which are :

Reflect Set goal

Collaborative
Observe
Planning

Research on
pupils

2.1 SET GOALS

First of all, teacher who involved in lesson study need to form a group and set
their goals. The teachers need to be sure of their objective and what is to be
achieve at the end of the lesson. The teachers should set a long term goals for
their pupils learning and curriculum in order to achieve an effective teaching
process. Besides, teachers should revise the curriculum standard and syllabus
beforehand to help them set their goals in order to achieve their teaching and
learning objective. In this case, we formed a group of three members to carry out
lesson study. Together with my peers, Movina and Buvanectvary we discussed
and set our goals and learning objective to produce an effective teaching.

2.2 PLANNING A LESSON

Planning a lesson is very important to produce an effective teaching where it

helps the teachers to follow the correct flow and be systematic in their teaching
process. It also helps to create confidence in teacher by assuring them the content
of the lesson. Thus, planning a lesson collaboratively can be more effective than
planning it individually as it involves ideas from different minds. The lesson plan
created collaboratively can be an effective and the individual suggestions for
improvement could bring a greater result when the lesson is carried out. As per
planning the lesson, together with my peers, I have discussed to determine
appropriate steps or activities or think of the maximum impact on the teaching and
learning process as well as on pupil’s achievement. The appropriate method is also
included as a result of the discussion.

2.3 RESEARCH ON PUPILS

Different pupils have different learning styles and abilities. It is important to

research the lesson plan created in the classroom to identify the weaknesses or
strength in one’s teaching. This could help the teacher to take necessary action in
improving the lesson plan for the future teaching. To fulfill this stage, we chose
Movina’s lesson plan to be carry out in the classroom. Individually, we carried
different stages in her lesson plan.

2
2.4 OBSERVE

In this stage, knowledgeable others is invited as an observer, commenter and

suggestions for improvement measures. This knowledgeable others will be briefed
by the Head of the group about the scope of teaching to be delivered. Then, the
teachers will carry out their lesson. While carrying out the lesson, the teachers
should collect data for major reflections or discussions which is mainly focused on
pupils’ response, behavior and learning. To fulfill this stage, we chose Movina’s
lesson plan to be carry out in the classroom. Individually, we carried different
stages in her lesson plan. While one is conducting the lesson, the rest were
observing the teaching.

2.5 REFLECT

This stage is leaded by the head of the group by looking back at the objectives
set before the lesson followed by the teaching teacher to comment, views and
reflection on teaching and the lesson plan. Meanwhile, the other teachers who
become the observers need to share information and need to emphasize aspects
on positive pupils’ learning based on the evidences. Furthermore, teachers should
discuss deeply into the strength,
weaknesses and think on how to improve in terms of results pupil learning, content
and lesson plan. Therefore, a discussion session between us was done for
evaluating or reflecting on our teaching. The key focused was the effectiveness of
planned activities and methods. If the lesson plan is not suitable and does not meet
the objectives, then the lesson plans need to be modified to be used by other
teachers or used in the future.

3.0 CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, lesson study is a good thing to improve the professionalism of

teachers towards a better achievement. Such collaboration of teachers can increase
teacher knowledge to a better level. This could help the teachers to share the best ways
to give you better results towards an effective learning and teaching.
