Lesson 5 Exercises

Section 1, 2
Activity
Describe the advantages of using simulations in SolidWorks. Then discuss Finite Element
Analysis.

Instruction
1. List five reasons why engineers use simulations in SolidWorks when designing
products.
2. Describe the role of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in simulations.

Section 3

Activity
Determine the maximum force that an Alloy Steel L-Bracket can handle, while still maintaining a
minimum safety factor of two. Add fixtures to the bottom two holes. Apply force from the rear.

Instruction
1. Open the L-Bracket and start SolidWorks SimulationXpress.
2. Set up the fixtures, loads and material.
3. Run the simulation.
4. To calculate the maximum force that the L-Bracket can handle while maintaining a
minimum safety factor of two, use the lowest factor of safety found in the L-Bracket.
