any of the companies in this year’s Top 100 listing have held leadership positions for several years. Interstingly
enough, despite current economic conditions, the leaders are still leading, strong players are still maintaining
position, and smaller processors are moving up in the ranks. Sales have either soared, increased slightly or stayed the
same. Not one company seemed to slip drastically this year — proof positive that the meat- and poultry-processing industry can
weather any storm and still come up fighting.
Not surprisingly, Tyson remains the heavy hitter, followed by Cargill, Smithfield Foods and Kraft.
Although the U.S. beef industry is trying to fight recession-related woes by promoting new, less expensive cuts from less
popular parts of the animal and pushing beef harder overseas, it seems to remain strong in its mission to pump out new and
exciting products.
The poultry sector also remains strong with Tyson at the helm answering consumers’call for innovation, frugality and healthful
alternatives.
Of course, rising costs, labor and immigration issues, biofuel mandates, internationalism and export matters all impact the
production and sale of today’s meat and poultry products. But, that said, the industry’s players — as seen in this year’s listing —
are fighting hard and are definitely here to stay.
