Cosmocuentos es una iniciativa creada por Fundación
Astromanía para fomentar la creación literaria de cuentos
breves sobre Astronomía y Ciencias Afines.
Chile es un país con cielos privilegiados, capital mundial
de la astronomía. Nuestro concurso nace como una
actividad de encuentro para compartir opiniones, puntos
de vista e inquietudes sobre el conocimiento del cosmos,
invitando tanto a jóvenes como adultos, a descubrir un
universo infinito de inspiración.
COSMIC TALES
Cosmic Tales is an initiative created by Astromanía Founda-
tion to promote creativity through the creation of short stories
concerning astronomy and other related scientific disciplines.
Chile is a country with privileged skies, the world capital of
astronomy. Our contest began as a meeting point to share
opinions, points of view and interests on our knowledge of the
cosmos, inviting both young and old to discover an infinite
universe full of inspiration.

estrellas danzantes

Mención honrosa categoría juvenil.
A través de mi telescopio disfrutaba de la hermosa vista que
Cassiopeia me entregaba. Caph empezó a moverse, dio giros
y vueltas junto a Schedar. Luego cambió su pareja a Achird,
encontrándose aparentemente en un muy complicado vals.
Segin roba la pareja de Caph, moviéndose de manera lenta y
pausada mientras que Ruchbah da vueltas y giros sin control
junto a Schedar, parecido a un tango.
Marfak entra en esta coreografía para unirse a Caph en
una coordinación de movimientos saltarines. Tres bailes
simultáneos, los pasos de los bailes van calzando hasta que
se vuelve un gran baile, de cuadrigas. Las estrellas danzan y
giran hasta que todas se dispersan, vuelven a sus lugares y
descansan con una luminiscencia espectacular.

I was looking through my telescope, enjoying the
beautiful view from Cassiopeia. Caph began to move,
twisting and turning with Schedar. Then it changed
partners to Achird, apparently finding itself in a very
complicated waltz. Segin steals Caph’s partner, moving
slowly and deliberately while Ruchbah twists and turns
out of control with Schedar, in what looks like a tango.
Marfak steps into this choreography to join Caph in a
coordination of jumping movements. Three simultaneous
dances, the dance steps come together until they become
one great big chariot dance. The stars dance and turn
until they all scatter, return home and rest with a
spectacular luminescence.

inmensidad del cosmos

Una tarde de Abril el caos azotó en la casa de Pablito cuando,
mientras jugaba con sus amigos en el computador, se cortó
inexplicablemente toda conexión a internet.
Pablito, en su frustración, miró hacia el cielo, justo cuando
aparecían las primeras estrellas en el firmamento y pensó:
Estos puntos destellantes en el cielo siempre han estado ahí,
y seguirán así. Cada estrella que vemos de noche es como el
sol que vemos de día, y quizá cada una de esas estrellas tiene
planetas como la tierra, donde viven seres que, al igual que
Pablito, miran los puntos destellantes en los cielos.
De pronto, en la inmensidad del cosmos, a Pablito sus
problemas ya no le parecían tan importantes.

immenseness of the cosmos

One April afternoon all chaos broke loose at Pablito’s house.
While he was playing with his friends on the computer, they
unexpectedly lost their Internet connection.
Pablito, in his frustration, looked up to the sky, just as the first stars
began to appear in the firmament, and he thought: These glittery
dots in the sky have always been there, and will always be there.
Each star that we see at night is like the Sun that we see during the
day, and perhaps each of these stars has planets like Earth, where
other beings, just like Pablito, look up at the glittery dots in the sky.
All of a sudden, in the immensity of the Cosmos, Pablito’s problems
didn’t seem so important any more.

Estrellas… planetas… colores, formas, todo… y nada.
Nada de lo que veía parecía real. Sólo eran imágenes.
En aquel observatorio prometieron enseñarme la in-
mensidad del cosmos. Lograron que me sintiera lejano,
solo… insignificante. Pero a pesar de todo eso, el univer-
so seguía sin ser real para mí. Seguía vacío en mi mente.
Vacío y oscuro.
Sentí temor.
Me ofrecieron mirar a través de uno de sus telescopios, y
junto a una extraña mezcla de miedo, pánico y ansiedad,
termine acercándome.
Era Saturno.
Con su extraño color amarillento.
Con sus anillos.
Y con una pequeña macha sobre él, Es la sombra de
Titán; me explicaron.
Y, por alguna razón, cuando lo vi… dejé de tener miedo.
Era real.
Stars, planets, colors, shapes, everything and nothing. None
of what I saw seemed real. They were just images.
In that observatory, they promised to show me the immensity
of the cosmos. They succeeded in making me feel far away,
alone, insignificant. But despite all that, the universe still
seemed unreal to me. It was empty in my mind.
Empty and dark.
I felt fear.
They offered to let me look through one of the telescopes, and
with a strange combination of fear, panic and anxiety, I
moved closer.
It was Saturn.
With its strange yellowish color.
With its rings.
And with a small spot above it. It is Titan’s shadow, they told
me.
And for some reason, after I saw it, I was no longer afraid.
It was real.

somos efímeros y seremos eternos…

En alguna parte de nuestro universo, un pequeño contemplaba
las estrellas cada noche y se preguntaba cuantas eran. Si
realmente eran de ese tamaño, si tenían madre, si tenían padre.
Como él, muchas veces se preguntó si sus padres eran separados
como los suyos, dedujo que el padre de las estrellas era el sol y
su madre la luna… por ende decía que la madre las acompañaba
en la noche y que el padre en el día salía a iluminar la vida de
los demás. Se propuso juntarlos, creó su nave de cristal y solía
imaginar una hermosa irrealidad... construyó un hogar galáctico,
surcando el universo práctico… en otro planeta de la vía láctea,
donde se vivía de eclipses efímeros.

we are ephemeral and we will be eternal...

In some part of our universe, a little boy contemplated the stars every
night and wondered how many there were. If they were really that size,
if they had a mother, if they had a father. Like him, he often wondered
if their parents were separated like his. He deduced that the father of the
stars was the Sun and the mother the Moon. He said that the mother
kept them company at night, and during the day the father came out to
light up the lives of others. He decided to bring them together, he created
his crystal ship and imagined a beautiful fantasy. He built a galactic
home, plowing through the practical universe on another planet in the
Milky Way, where life was full of ephemeral eclipses.

Cierto día, los hombres despertaron y todo había terminado.
Recorrieron los lugares donde alguna vez estuvieron sus
ciudades y no hallaron nada de lo que pretendían encontrar.
El día en que todo había terminado, nadie hizo preguntas.
No hubo emociones encontradas ni llantos nerviosos.
Aquel día, desaparecieron los secretos y las mentiras.
También las esperanzas y las reglas que romper.
El día en que todo había terminado pasó lento y silencioso,
sin siquiera la más mínima amenaza de que algo
lo pudiera hacer cambiar.
Cuando el día en que todo había terminado acabó,
los hombres se reunieron en el vacío y sin miedo,
miraron el cielo nocturno.
Las estrellas aún estaban ahí.

they were still there

The day finally came when the men awoke and it was all over.
They went to the places where their cities once stood to find
nothing of what was once there.
The day it all ended, nobody asked questions.
There were no mixed feelings or nervous tears.
That day, the secrets and lies disappeared.
So did the hope and the rules to be broken.
The day it all ended had been slow and silent, showing no
signs that anything would make it all change.
When the day that it all ended drew to a close, the men
gathered together in the emptiness and, without fear, they
turned to look at the night sky.
The stars were still there.

Dicen que en el Valle del Elqui está despejado 360 días
al año. La Viole lo sabía mejor que nadie.
Cuando era niña miraba la Luna despuntar entre los
cerros y cada noche intentaba ver algo diferente en las
manchas de su superficie. La salida de la Luna siempre
fue su amanecer favorito.
No se lo perdió en su noche de bodas, ni cuando
nacieron sus hijos, ni cuando fallecieron sus padres.
No se lo perdió nunca, aunque sus ojos se volvieron
turbios y cansados.
Cuando la Viole nos dejó, se llevó a la Luna en sus ojos,
trabajó toda su vida en tal ambiciosa empresa.

They say that in Elqui Valley, the skies are
clear 360 days a year. Viole knew this better than anyone.
When she was a child, she watched the Moon emerge from
behind the hills and every night she tried to find something
different in the spots on its surface.
The moonrise was always her favorite time of day.
She didn’t miss it on her wedding night, nor when her
children were born, nor when her parents died. She didn’t
miss it for anything, even when her eyes were bleary and tired.
When Viole left us, she left with the Moon in her eyes, she had
worked all her life on such an ambitious undertaking.

Todos nos mirábamos a la cara. Notamos cientos de rostros,
cada uno con una mirada singular. Reconocimos a más
de un viejo amigo, conversamos e hicimos planes. Padres
prestaban atención a sus hijos y viceversa. Anocheció
y curiosos levantamos la mirada: Miles de millones
de estrellas. Nos sentimos increíblemente pequeños
recordando nuestro lugar en el cosmos —la más grande
lección de humildad— Al mismo tiempo el universo nos
hablaba sobre nuestros orígenes, decía que somos polvo
de estrellas contemplando las estrellas. Hambrientos de
conocimiento nuestra atención apuntaba hacia los cielos.
Había vida, estábamos vivos… Hasta que las compañías
telefónicas anunciaron el regreso de sus servicios y la
ciudad volvió a ser habitada por un montón de zombis.

We all looked each other in the face. We saw hundreds of
faces, each with a unique expression. We recognized more
than one old friend, we talked and we made plans. Parents
paid attention to their children and vice versa. Night fell and
we looked up, curious: Billions of stars. We felt so small as
we remembered our place in the cosmos -the biggest lesson in
humility. At the same time, the universe spoke to us of our
origins, it told us that we are merely stardust contemplating
stars. Hungry for knowledge, we turned our attention to
the skies. There was life, we were alive. Until the phone
companies announced that their services were back on line
and the city once again was filled with a bunch of zombies.

Laika se despertaba todos las días a la misma
hora, 6 de la mañana. Corriendo subía el primer
montículo ubicado frente a la base Lunar y se
sentada a observar el amanecer en dirección
a su hogar en la Tierra. Luego, una sensación
de libertad la invadía y corría sin parar hasta
darle 28 vueltas a la Luna, quedaba extenuada,
entonces viendo la gran danza planetaria solía
componer canciones, que aullaba, despertando
un coro repentino de perros en la Tierra.

Laika awoke every day at the same time, 6 in the morning.
She ran to climb the first hillock across from the Lunar Base,
where she sat to watch the sun rise in the direction of her
home on Earth. Then, a wave of liberation came over her and
she ran without stopping until she had run 28 times around
the Moon, and she was exhausted. When she saw the great
planetary dance, she would compose songs, which she would
howl out, arousing a sudden chorus of dogs on Earth.

Cuando Selene se fue al cielo de los gatitos, la
niña pasó toda la noche pensando dónde quedaría,
porque quería enviarle su ratón favorito.
Al abrir los ojos fue lo primero que preguntó, pero
sus papás sólo respondieron que estaba lejos.
Igual estaba decidida a encontrarla, así que un mapa
del cielo debía servir. En su colegio había uno y
cuando estuvo frente a él leyó: Nube de Magallanes,
Andrómeda, Vía Lac… - y suspiró diciendo: ¡Ay
Selene!, ¿en qué cielo te has metido?
Una profesora al verla afligida se acercó y le dijo:
-Si Selene es selenita, debiese estar en la Luna.
Esa noche durmió feliz. Es cierto que la luna
quedaba lejos, pero había gente que sabía llegar.

When Selene went to kitty heaven in the sky, the girl
spent all night thinking about where she had gone,
because she wanted to send Selene her favorite mouse.
When she opened her eyes in the morning, it was the
first thing she asked, but her parents only responded that
she had gone far away.
She was still determined to find her, so she looked for a
map of the sky. She found one in her school and when
she had it in front of her, she read: Magellanic Cloud,
Andromeda, Milky Way... - she sighed and said: Oh
Selene! Which one have you gone to?
A teacher nearby saw her suffering and she approached
and said: -If Selene is selenite, she must be on the moon.
That night the girl went to sleep happy. It is true that
the Moon was far away, but there were people who knew
how to get there.
