Village Knowledge Centres (VKC)

A pioneering initiative of Union Bank of India

Rural India is the backbone of the country's economy and for development of this
sector we have to empower rural people. Agriculture in our country is the vocation
of majority of our population. However, Indian agriculture needs radical changes to
cope up with increasing demand for quality products in domestic as well as world
market. In most pockets of the country, farmers are mainly doing traditional
agriculture. Information technology and communication is developing at a very fast
pace and is out of reach of many sections of the rural population even today.

The advent and fast development of Information Technology and Communication has
narrowed down the distance through faster communication and the world has
become a global village. This has brought a sea change in all walks of life especially
in rural areas wherein majority of India lives. In order to make headway in this
direction, it is of prime importance to sensitize the farmers about various aspects
related to agriculture/market information.

Rural business is increasingly under the cloud of competition from all quarters, and
to combat this, it was felt that our Bank has to step up to make its presence felt
amongst the rural community.

Keeping in view these requirements, a need was felt by our Bank to sensitize the
farmers/to enrich their knowledge to meet the challenges of today. It is in this
background, our Bank has set up Village Knowledge Centres throughout the country
at potential rural/semi urban branches for the benefit of the rural population in
general and farmers in particular. Village Knowledge Centres are the core centres
for rural development activities and serve as a focal point for implementation of
several developmental programmes of social interest.
Farmers mainly use information from other farmers, input dealers, programmes on
radio and television to improve on cultivation practices, inputs etc. Now, Village
Knowledge Centres will provide them with latest know-how on developments.

Village Knowledge Centres serve as information dissemination centre providing

instant access to farmers to latest information/knowledge available in the field of
agriculture, starting from crop production to marketing. In-Charge, Village
Knowledge Centre works as a relationship manager between the Bank and the
farmers.

Our Bank has opened 198 Village Knowledge Centres throughout the country and
following activities are undertaken/services offered free of cost :

Imparting knowledge on new developments in improved methods of

cultivation/technologies, proper use of fertilizers, pesticides, etc. to farmers.
Dissemination of weather data and agro climatic conditions, latest information on
price of inputs and agriculture produce to farmers.
Giving inputs on skill development, micro enterprises and formation of Self Help
Groups to farmers, landless labourers and other artisans and establishment of
Farmers Club.
Guiding farmers about our Bank’s loan products/various schemes and rendering
assistance for completion of loan applications and other formalities to avail loan
from the Bank.
Making efforts for making command area villages as “100% Banking Habit
Villages”.
Subscribing local newspapers at Gram Panchayat Office at Bank's cost for
improving dissemination of information to farmers.
Magazines, periodicals giving useful information to the farmers about modern
ways of cultivation, prices of agriculture produce etc. are made available at the
VKC.
Encouraging villagers to send their children particularly the girl child to school.
Establishing at least 3-5 farmers clubs in every village under their command area.
As an added attraction to the rural people, downloading employment news for
use of farmers and their wards.
Providing financial knowledge and credit counseling not only to the customers of
the Bank but the benefit is ushered equally on all those who seek help under
Union Mitr Scheme.
Educating the rural folk of the benefits of our Debt Swapping products viz. Union
General Credit Card Scheme, Debt Swapping Scheme and Union Sahay Scheme for
SHGs free of cost especially to those who avail loan from local moneylenders at
exorbitant rate of interest.
Extending proper guidance and counseling to all the borrowers especially NPA
borrowers for enabling them to revive their business activities/upgrade their
account.
Bringing about financial inclusion by canvassing products such as Union General
Credit Card, Bhumiheen Green Card, Joint Liability Groups, No Frills Accounts.
Educating the rural masses about the Right to Information Act (RTI) 2005.

As part of commitment to the nation, our Bank has adopted 101 villages across the
country through selected Village Knowledge Centres under "Union Adarsh Gram" for
their all round socio economic development.
