Requests
There are several different ways to ask for something in Turkish, but one particular pattern is extremely common in
making requests. It makes use of the simple present tense - for now, you just need to know that's the one with an r
that is used to express habitual things like I swim at the beach and I usually eat at 8:00pm. Here are some verbs in
the simple present tense so that you can get used to recognizing them:
Gider.
He/she/it goes.
Gelirim.
I come.
Kullanırsın.
You use.
Uyuruz.
We sleep.
To ask somebody to do something, you can put this simple present tense into its question form. It's a polite and
extremely common way to hear requests made in Turkish. If you're speaking to a stranger or your superior, you
should use misiniz instead of misin.
Gelir misin?
Will you come?
Verir misin?
Will you give?
Çeker misiniz?
Will you take (a photo)?
Basar mısınız?
Will you press?
Sound Chill
You can always say rica ederim to express you're welcome in Turkish. That's boring, though. Mix it up a little.
Problem değil.
No problem.
Ne demek.
It's nothing.
Önemli değil.
It's nothing. (It's not important.)
You may have seen two versions of thank you: teşekkür ederim and teşekkür ederiz. What's the difference?
Simple: teşekkür ederiz is used to say thank you on behalf of two or more people (that -iz at the end is the we
suffix). Teşekkür ederim should only be used to say thank you on behalf of yourself (that -im is the I suffix).
Teşekkür ederim.
I am thankful.
Teşekkür ederiz.
We are thankful.
