JOB ENLARGEMENT

Job Enlargement is an increase in the aspect of responsibilities and tasks to make a position more
challenging. The tasks are added at the same level as those in the current position, since it is a
horizontal expansion. The purpose of this is to make a position more interesting by adding new
challenges in employees work scheme. After doing the same thing for period of time, employees
can get bored. By doing more tasks from the same field can generate more ideas and making jobs
even more interesting. Furthermore, no skills training are required since it is a horizontal
expansion where the tasks are of the same level. There is an addition to the number of tasks an
individual performs. There is thus an increased scope of carrying out tasks that are versatile and
yet very similar in certain aspects. This can increase work flexibility where the employees can do
multiple jobs within the same dimension.

JOB ENRICHMENT

Job Enrichment is a management concept that involves redesigning jobs so that they are more
challenging to the employee so they only have less repetitive works to do. Unlike job
enlargement, job enrichment use vertical job loading as its principle in order to give more
challenging works towards the employees on different levels. To enrich a position, brainstorming
the list of potential changes to the position is a must. The changes can be done by using
H’rzberg's seven principles to review to options. The advantage of job enrichment is that the
employees will have higher job satisfaction. The turnover rates can be reduced, while the
absenteeism level can be lowered down. Besides that, employees can also utilize their skills
better and as a result, the company can get high-quality works from the same employees.
