THE GREEN ISSUE

Do you think about the things YOU could do to be greener? I know I have. Why
aren’t we doing more to help our ailing planet? No time, not a lot of money to do
more things, and maybe a feeling of futility that whatever you ARE able to do,
really amounts to nothing on a global scale. I believe that if we all did a bit, every
day or week, it actually WOULD make a difference. There are a lot of us.

other European countries and Canada. Vancouver has banned supermarkets from
throwing out food. They are legally required to donate it. Large steps indeed.
We can all spend 10% of our food budget locally. The difference to the local
economy? Huge. Plus fresher food; less air pollution, and fewer long-haul trucks
on the road mean less road repairs.
Why not plant your own garden or balcony? Or go foraging? 519-432-1352

IN LONDON’S EAST SIDE
Nova Era Bakery g 460 Egerton St. g (519) 453-8300 g novaera.ca

$5
A terrific value lunch is to be found tucked away in back
of the Western Fair Racetrack. Nova Era Bakery has re-
markable, fresh Portuguese sweets, cakes and breads, a
deli counter and delicious savoury pastries. We had the
cheese sandwich for $3.99 and a sliced grilled chicken sandwich for
$5.49. You could also choose between pork or beef. And surprise!
They were BIG! Each came on a choice of rye, crusty or soft roll.
They came custom-made with lots of choices: tomato, lettuce, pickles,
mayo, mustard, etc. They will even split a sandwich for you to share
on two plates.
The place was rockin’ the day we went in. (No wonder!) Lots of work-
ing men, moms with infants in baby carriages, and high school kids. And when I left I loaded up on Broa, my favourite corn
bread and some egg custard tarts.
I thought I would need to change this section to $10 $15 $20 lunches because of the difficulty of finding a good $5 lunch,
until we found this place. Excellent value!

Spare Parts Diner g 63 Clarke Road g (519) 601-2200 g sparepartsdiner.com

$10
We were happy to find The Spare Parts Diner because London East is filled with
mostly chain restaurants. Spare Parts is another family-run restaurant and de-
scribes itself as serving Homestyle Greek Cuisine. They locally source their ingre-
dients, using Canadian beef which is antibiotic and hormone free. This is the way
to MY heart!
They make their own brisket and I enjoyed a skillet ($8.95) of this tender meat. A
sizzling-hot oven dish was loaded up with homefries, well-seasoned sauce, 2 cheeses
and 2 poached eggs, which most kitchens do not appreciate having to make. They
were perfect.
My companion’s Ooey Gooey Grilled Cheese sandwich $6.95 came with a side of
fries. There was lots of melted mozzarella & cheddar on Texas toast. And the plates
were loaded with food. Most dishes were priced between $6.95 and $11.95 and you
can get Burgers, Pizza, Panzerotti and Fish & Chips. This is a good place to head to for
their All Day Breakfast ($4.95).

MexiCactus Bar & Grill g 1392 Trafalgar St. g 519-963-0816 g mexicactus.ca

$15
When we opened the door to MexiCactus, we both stopped in amazement. The place, which we thought would
be a little greasy spoon turned out to be spacious - 100 seats spacious! And
very nicely decorated with a Mexican theme. It is run by Clara and her fam-
ily who are from El Salvador. To complicate things, we had to be out in a
half hour. They killed it!
We were immediately presented with a dish of home-made corn chips and salsa. We
had a Chicken Chimichanga ($15.35) and an order of Chicken Tacos ($13.45). Both
meals had a filling of shredded chicken plus various spices and vegetables. Both en-
trees were wrapped in a flour tortilla and deep fried, including the tacos. They came
with refried beans and Spanish rice. The dishes came with a small tossed salad of ice-
berg, tomatoes and a very nice vinaigrette. They were hot, delicious and impressively
large. We both took home half of our meals!
There were also 11 tequilas on the bar. We must go back in the evening, when there is
no time restraint.

When I lived in Wortley Village, the main street

Westland Gallery was packed with cool shops: from junk to junque,
from collectibles to gently-used items. And I used to
prowl the rooms feeling like a modern archeologist.
There was always great stuff to find, some of which
I could afford.
Jonathon Bancroft-Snell had a shop here before
moving downtown. All the old ”Shoppes” are gone
now, repurposed into pet boutiques, restaurants, ho-
listic health centres etc. And one of the real An- John Huggins
tique stores became The Westland Gallery, a place
for viewing fine art.

Bijan Ghalehpardaz

Al & Karen Stewart, the owners, started in the Vil-

lage fifteen years ago with The Art Exchange. It is
still running and is focused on framing, but they also
show the work of around 50 artists.
With the dedicated gallery space of the Westland
Gallery, the Stewarts can accommodate bigger
shows. Some could be called smaller shows, such Brian Dirks
as the Square Foot Show, with the small size of the
pieces being the criteria for entry.
They launch a new art show every three weeks. The
public is welcome, of course and the pieces are for
sale.
The gallery is also available to rent for parties, com-
munity events, creative workshops, even luncheons.
It is a very beautiful space and I am glad that the
windows were retained, with their gothic ginger-
bread detailing. Eric Styler

by Jennifer Roberts
This book is ten years old review by Joan Brennan
but, hey, I got excited. Here’s
a Do It Yourself Book that
features excellent designs for living spaces that are beautiful, re-
sourceful, doable and revel in the Three R’s of a Green World!
Why bother to tear apart and reimagine pre-loved building material?
This is what the author says:
Individuality - if you want your home to be as individual as you
are.
Quality - “If something has lasted long enough to make it worth
reusing, it was likely well-made or of superior quality in the first
place.” Especially antique wood.
Beauty - you find beauty in a found

object and remake it your own.
Visibility - a house of salvaged items has more bragging-rights
than store-bought-available-everywhere. So do it and brag
away! I think people will be interested.
Romance of the Past - they contain stories, give us a sense of
place, of time, of culture past.
And of course it is Green to reduce the pressure on the earth
for its non-renewable resources.
Be brave! Reuse.

Local Beer Flowing
There is a Whirlwind happening in the Beer World.
A return to some of the older ways of doing things is radical thinking, indeed!

Craft BEER is the ONLY segment of BEER sales that is growing!

And Craft BEER production has come to The Forest City big time, with a HUGE EXPLOSION OF BREWERIES in
the past year or two. Glatt Brothers had the first craft brewery which despite extraordinary products, closed after several
years. Home Town Brewery had a run of a year or two while located in the Small Business Centre’s Business Incubator.

FORKED RIVER has done so well in its 2 years that it’s already expanding. In 2014 two of their beers won awards:
a gold in the blond category at the Canadian Brewery Awards for their Capital Blond and a bronze at the US Beer Open
Championships for the Belgian Triple.

THE LONDON BREWING COMPANY has opened in conjunction with The Root Cellar Cafe. The brewery
so far supplies beer only to The Root Cellar and proudly uses local and organic ingredients, including London-grown hops. And
the employees can buy shares in the co-op, The London Brewing Co-operative. They plan to hold periodic pop-up beer stores at
The Root Cellar where you can buy your favourite beers, also branded glasses and t-shirts.

TOBOGGAN BREW PUB joins THE CEEPS as Richmond Row’s second Brew Pub. Toboggan is owned by
Mike Smith of Joe Kool’s fame.

MILOS’ CRAFT BEER EMPORIUM, the best craft beer bar in town has recently acquired their own beer,
compliments of the amazing Adil Ahmad and Nick Baird whose enterprise is perhaps the micro-est brewery around.

SAY “I DO”
...to GREEN
There are ways to be green and still have a fabulous wedding recep-
tion. In a lot of ways, going green is about supporting local and sustain-
able businesses as well as following the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle slogan.
Minimizing our carbon footprint is quite doable. We already use a local
photographer, caterer, hall, designer, planner and DJ, so that’s a good start.
Use real tableware and cutlery.
Forget about the 100 bottles of water, and instead opt for pitchers of water
infused with sliced fruit and mint, for flavour and beauty.
Go with raw food, vegan, vegetarian menus or use grass-fed beef or free-
run chickens, local cheeses and breads from a local bakery. Or buy food
grown within a 100 mile radius. Check out local Farmer’s Markets for sea-
sonal produce and buy fair trade coffee and tea.
If there is leftover food, donate it to a local shelter.
Lengths of natural fabrics can be used on the tables and cleaned and re-
used later.

DJs with modern, computerized equipment will consume much less

power than a live band. However, an acoustic band trumps all – there
is no power required. Or create your own playlist and employ DJ iPod.
Dance on the green amidst artificial, reusable candles or use solar-pow-
ered lights. If you want candles on the tables for lighting and ambience,
choose soy based candles instead of the cheaper paraffin. You can even
have the guests take them home as favours.
Make your own favours. Preserves and pickles, bags of homemade cook-
ies and squares, little tree saplings, or seeds for the guests’ gardens say
more than a tchotchka with your names engraved on it.

single-family households discard
about 275 kilos of food waste each year. That means one in
four food purchases still
ends up in the garbage.
(Toronto taxpayers spend
nearly $10 million a year
getting rid of food waste
that's not composted.)
The percentages are like-
ly similar here in London.

CELEBRITIES
AMONG US
Maybe you’ve run into this London character? He
appears in the bars at night, his face masked, his
body wrapped in a black cape.

Maybe you were one of the people who were in-

timidated or maybe, like me, just very happy to
have a Luchador in our midst. London does not
host a lot of costumed characters. Roy McDonald,
street poet and busker; Steve Stunning, multi-
pierced rock musician; um… a legion of tattooed
and pierced people, but that’s pretty mainstream.
From time to time the streets fill with cos-players
and superheroes. And that’s about it, I think.

Eltoro Venus is an experimental electronic musi-

cian who performs alone, using tape loops and a
drum machine but also plays guitars, drums, bass
and piano to build his (all-original) loops.

We sat down together on the patio at The APK,

in the daytime. We were both mask-less. And we
spoke of identity and costume. With the mask,
gloves, cape concealing his identity, nobody
knows his identity, his age or his race, no one can
pigeonhole him.

Eltoro Venus builds his brand by showing up in

costume; it’s theatre, building a brand in a non-
traditional way. People take selfies with him and
he’s everywhere on twitter and fb. In this age,
when postering is beside the point, maybe he has
created a new marketing method for musicians.

*lu·cha·dor (looCHǝdôr/) noun

speaking countries

10 Rules of Saving Money:
Make your Money Greener
SAVE YOUR "GREEN"
SO YOU CAN ENJOY ALL THE
COLOURS OF LONDON
Money is finite for most of us, but somehow we need to get enough
squirrelled away to survive our retirement in style. And by style I do
not mean eating the gourmet cat food.
Ten rules and they are all easy. What is hard is sticking to the plan
when money is tight or when our imagination is captured by mate-
rial things.

Rule 1: Spend less than you earn: the golden rule is spend 90%
or less.
Rule 2: Start saving early. Look up compound interest online sometime if
you need inspiration. It is your money making you more money.
Rule 3: If you start late, make up for lost time. Add any windfalls, such as inheritances, to your
retirement fund.
Rule 4: Don’t leave free money on the table. Use every money matching addition to your pension
fund that your employer offers.
Rule 5: Minimize your taxes. Use RRSPs, RESPs etc. Get a tax free savings account.
Rule 6: Take a little risk. Do not cash out on the stock market when it crashes, or you will miss the
rebound.
Rule 7: Stay informed about your investments. Do your research. Consider your own risk level and
what you are comfortable with. Sometimes your advisor needs to be kept on YOUR side.
How much does your financial advisor cost? And is that the best you can do?
Rule 8: Don’t follow the lemmings. Be creative, use your inventive mind to maximize your retire-
ment fund.
Rule 9: Work longer. Do not retire early, but late. Or semi-retire. Get a second income - do you
love crafts, woodworking, raising organic lettuce or repurposing items? Make it pay. Consider real
estate, but beware the big, bad bubble!
Rule 10: Maximize your income potential. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities. Don’t settle
for a dead end job. Life-long education pays dividends, but avoid the student loan trap. Take as little
as you can in loans and pay them off as soon as possible.
