Standards: 4. NF.3a understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring

II. INSTRUCTION
A. Opening
Prior Students will use their prior knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions, problem-solving
knowledge investigation, along with adding mixed numbers skills to help them develop their knowledge base of
connection: how to subtract mixed numbers.

Closure: Discuss the lesson with students checking for understanding. Ask “How do you subtract mixed
numbers?” The answer would be “You can subtract them by writing them as an equivalent improper
fraction.”
