Unit: French Revolution and the Rise & Fall of the Napoleonic Empire

Standards: MWH-6: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the creation of nation
states in Europe and the struggle by non-European nations to gain and/or maintain sovereignty.
 MWH-6.2 Analyze the reasons for independence movements as exemplified by the
French Revolution.

Learning Targets (Student Objectives):


1. I can explain the significance of why the French Monarch failed at the end of the 16th
century and how it led to major changes to arise within the French Government?

2. I can explain the reasons that occurred during the French Revolution led Napoleon
Bonaparte to rise to power by declaring himself Emperor of France?

3. I can explain the reasons why Napoleon wanted to conquer most of Europe?

4. I can the significance that led to Napoleon’s downfall and his two captures before being
exceled to an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?

5. I am able to understand how changes in government policies are still in place in France
today?

Level of Mastery: Throughout the Unit on the French Revolution and Napoleon, the students
will develop a better understanding of how the French Monarch lost it popularity with the French
people. They will also determine the different reasons why the French people protested against
their country’s monarch known as the French Revolution. During the second half of the Unit,
the students will discover how Napoleon rose to power after the French Revolution and why he
wanted to conquer many of the countries throughout Europe, which eventually lead to his down
fall as he was eventually exceled on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. To determine
how the students have developed their mastery skills throughout the Unit, I will offer the
students a pre-test on the French Revolution and a pre-test on rise of Napoleon. After the
students have mastered the different skills that they have learned throughout the entire Unit, I
will test their learning skills with a post-test on the French Revolution and Napoleon.

Teaching Strategies: For students who are having trouble mastering the different aspects that
they will learn from this Unit on the French Revolution and Napoleon, I will have the students
complete several different types of activities to that they will have a better understanding of the
material. By having the students work together in these group activities, it will give the students
who have mastered their learning of the material the opportunity to teach other students. In
return this will help the struggling students master the necessary skills needed to successfully
complete the post-tests and pre-test for this Unit.

 Have the students work in several groups to complete a Jigsaw Activity based on a Close
Reading from a primary source documents that has been translated from the French
Revolution.
 Have the students work together a group in a Fish Bowl Activity as they discuss about
different aspects that they have learned about a particular event that occurred during the
French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon.
 After the students do a Close Reading on a primary source document from the
Napoleonic era and they will Turn and Talk with a fellow student about what they have
learned.

Enrichment Opportunities:
 Type I Enrichment – I will invite a historian from the University of South Carolina or
from a local community college as a guest speaker and have them talk to the students
about they have discovered from their research on the topic on the French Revolution
and/or Napoleon. The day before the guest speaker comes into the classroom I will have
the students work together to create a list of different questions that they want to ask the
historian when he or she arrives.
 Type I Enrichment – I will take the students on a virtual tour throughout France and many
of the other kingdoms in Europe by having the students look at Story Maps on the French
Revolution and Napoleon using the website https://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/. In these
Story Maps, this will give the students the opportunity to explore on their own so that
they can discover what they want to learn more about through additional research.
 Type II Enrichment – When the guest speaker comes in from the local college/university,
I will have the students work with historian to help them solve a problem that they are
having trouble figuring out while doing research on for a project in this Unit. By having
the students work together with the historian, they will learn to master the skills they need
to complete their project.
 Type III Enrichment – I will have the students design their own project for this Unit on
the French Revolution and Napoleon. For the project I will let the students’ choice their
own historical event or person from this Unit and allow them to get creative to complete
the project. They can create a diorama, write a poem, create a play, etc. . . .
Pre-Test: French Revolution- For each question we will have a class discussion explaining the
different events that occurred prior and during the French Revolution so that they can have a
better understanding as the master the information needed to pass the post-test. The correct
