Instrumental Music: Strings

Violin
Beginner Level
11/9/17

Objectives:

A. Students will learn how to play a section of “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 in the key
of A major.
a. Learn the note G#
b. Playing short notes versus long notes
c. Playing leaps and jumps
d. How to position the bow for tricky rhythms

Warmup:

A. Time Limit (2 Minutes)

B. Working with the notes in A Major, I will conduct a “my turn, your turn” warmup.
C. I will tell the class what I am doing so that they are prepared for what they are about to
do. I will tell them that I am going to play “Mississippi Hot Dog” on the A string and
then G sharp. I will remind the class what an A and G sharp is. Then I will continue with
the same idea using all of the pitches in the song that I will be teaching. This includes
changing from A to C, A to E, and E to D sharp, etc. We will basically be playing the
song, but just with “Mississippi Hot Dog.”
D. I will tell the class that they learned all the notes for “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5
and then we have to put it together in rhythm.

Procedure

A. Time Limit (2 ½ minutes)

B. I will teach the song by putting the sheet music up on the board.
C. Next I will have the class put their bows in rest position so that we can sing the song.
This will help them get the song into their ears. As singers, this is how we learn music
best.
D. The class will then sight read the song on their violins. If there is time, I will go back and
fix any sections that need to be fixed.
E. The first couple of measures will be the easy part. I sense that there will be a bit of
trouble in the second half of the song. I will spend more of my time on this section. The
trouble will come from switching from note to note. If there is trouble, I will go back and
work on changing the finger position for each note.
F. On the high E, it is held out for 3 beats, I will remind the class where to place the bow so
that it can be held out for as long as it should.
Conclusion

A. To end the lesson, I will have the whole class play the song from the beginning.
