Papazian said he compiled all of that data into

one document, which can now be accessed from
VikingWeb.
One of the factors that could impact the task
force’s proposal is the issue of how courses will be
credited. Currently, Berry operates on the credit
hour system, in which courses are assigned credit
hours depending, roughly, on the amount of hours
the class meets per week. Under this system, the cur-
rent general education program requires 53 credit
hours to meet the graduation requirement.
However, Timberlake said the Faculty Assembly
is slated to vote Thursday to create a committee that
would examine the possibility of shifting to a course
unit system, in which every course, regardless of the
amount of class time each week, would be credited
as a single credit unit. Timberlake said although he
thinks this change is unlikely to happen, it would
impact the general education program.
“If we went to a unit system, then we, like most
colleges who use that, would likely require around
32 course units for students to graduate,” he said.
“That would mean we would have to seriously look
at cutting back on our general education require-
ments to account for that.”
But Papazian said the preliminary proposals

credit hour model or the unit model.
“There’s no reason why units should dramati-
cally affect what we’re doing with general educa-
tion,” Papazian said. “Regardless of the outcome
of that decision, our proposal will be able to be

spanning the spectrum of possibilities with regard
to general education curriculum changes. Once the
task force decides on a proposal, it will be sent to the
provost and, pending her approval, will be placed
into effect next academic year.
Reynolds said he feels that the majority of the
campus is happy with the current general educa-
tion program, but some will always have their own
suggestions for improvement.
“There are always going to be people who think
general education courses get in the way,” he said.
“But it basically helps with the kind of educa-
