Lesson Goal Studetns will learn about the Mexican holiday of “Dia de los Muertos”.
Students will create a “Papel Picado”, just like people do in Mexico to
celebrate Dia de los Muertos
Lesson Objective Students will be able to describe Dia de los Muertos. Students will create a
Papel Picado
Essential Question(s) What is Dia de los Muertos? How is the holiday celebrated?
Assessment and Criteria Students will answer questions posed on the Dia de los Muertos EdPuzzle.
Students will create a Papel Picado by following technical instruction.
Resources (books, articles, video Teacher-created EdPuzzle, Papel Picado technical instruction print-out
links, etc.) papers
Beginning 5 minutes Teacher will introduce the topic of Dia de los Muertos. Teacher will ask,
“Does anyone know what Dia de los Muertos is?” Students may raise their
hand to answer. Teacher will instruct students to view the teacher-created
EdPuzzle on their student devices.
Middle 45 minutes Students will complete the EdPuzzle assessment on their devices. Teacher
will instruct students to grab a piece of colored tissue paper when they are
finished and return to their seat. When students are finished with the
EdPuzzle, teacher will pass out Papel Picado instruction sheets. Students
will follow the technical instructions to fold and cut their Papel Picado.
When students are finished with their first Papel Picado, they may make
more.
End 10 minutes Students will attach their Papel Picado(s) to a string at the front of the
classroom. This will create a banner of everyones’ Papel Picados. The
teacher will remind students that Papel Picado banners are a traditional
decoration for Dia de los Muertos.
