Key Materials: Paper, block printing ink, spoons or palette knives, Plexiglas plates, brayer
rollers, printing press, felts, scrap sheets, trays, foliage/nature, spray bottle with water

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks


 Welcome the students into the classroom. As they come in, pass out the reflection handout.
When the bell rings, introduce the lesson using the power point presentation about types of
nature printing. Show them the press and explain to them what a monoprint is. Tell them
that you will be using items from nature as resists in their prints. Ask them for examples of
what would be appropriate foliage to run through the press. (10 minutes)
 Collect the students and go outside for a nature walk. Let them know they will have about
10 minutes to explore. Monitor them as they roam any wooded area around campus that is

available for you to use. Answer any questions they may have about what is appropriate to
use etc.(10 minutes)
 Bring everyone back to class and instruct them to put their foliage at their desk. Have
students gather around the printing press and do a demo of how to ink and print a
monoprint block. Be sure to go over the proper amount of ink to roll out. Show them that
they shouldn’t ink to the edge of the plate and ask them why that would be an issue. (10
minutes)
o Choose your ink colors (up to two) and place a VERY small amount in the ink trays.
Tell them they should use their ‘artist’s intuition’ throughout this process, and ask
them if anyone has any ideas as to what that could mean (break it down to its parts
if they are having trouble).
o Roll your ink out in the tray to blend. Place your plexiglass plate on a scrap sheet and
ink it.
o Place foliage intuitively. Explain to them that this needs to be a quick process so they
should listen to their gut for the composition.
o Instruct them to have all of their sheets of printing paper ready. Using scrap sheets
to protect the felts, roll the plate through to get the initial print. Remove the foliage
for a second print. For the third print, have them lightly saturate a sheet of paper
with a spray bottle of water and press.
o At this point, show them the exemplar you have created. Explain to them that you
want them to choose their favorite mediums to work back into the prints and make
a mixed media piece. Tell them to work intuitively and spontaneously when they
work on these pieces and that you would like to see documentation of the final
product (email is on the reflection handout).
 Tell students you will call them up by rows/tables/numbers to use the printing station.
While waiting for their turn they should be working on whatever assignment they are
working on currently. Divide the remaining time up by the amount of groups you will have.
When the first group is through, have them clean their plates, ink trays, and rollers while
the next group comes to start. As they finish, give the students an evaluation form to fill out
for the lesson (55 minutes)
 Use the last five minutes of class for daily cleanup. Remind them if they are not done with
the evaluations, they can hand them in next time. Also remind them that you would like to
see the final product. Thank them for working well if they did so, and send them off with
the bell. (5 minutes)

Accommodations
 Representation: I will use a power point presentation to instruct and have physical
exemplars. I will give the students a demonstration of how to use the printing press
correctly.
 Engagement: Other than creating prints with foliage and using the tools provided properly,
students will be working intuitively and be given creative autonomy throughout the course
of this project.
 Expression: Individuals will be able to express themselves through foliage choice, ink color
choice, and choice of media to work back into their print.
