Beidleman CTP 2

Introduction

I’m currently not in the classroom. The classroom I will analyze is my alma mater and

one I work closely with today. James Madison Middle School (Madison), a product of Prince

George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) in Maryland. PGCPS is the 3rd largest public school

system in Maryland, servicing predominantly African American students. The English language

arts classroom possesses a SMART board and 10 desktop computers. Students’ rarely use the

desktops, but the SMART boards are always used to provide instruction. There are 25 students

in the classroom, ages ranging from 11-12. The population is mixed, and there are no reported

special needs.

Student Achievement Data

Based on the classroom participation, students seem to be disinterested in the learning

process. Students are not active throughout the lesson. Students do not complete homework

assignments. In class, students write incomplete sentences and are not aware of basic structure.

Students also struggle with proper spelling in their assignments. When assigned time on the
Beidleman CTP 3

desktops, students are often confused of the objective and sometime found on non-instructional

websites. Students need a plan to focus their learning. Students also need the opportunity to

maximize their potential and by operating the technology already provided.

Academic Need

During this stage, students should be aware of basic levels of the parts of speech and how

to appropriately structure sentences. Technology will help engage students in activities and keep

them focused when completing assignments. Students should be exposed to tools that will ignite

their interest and leave a long-lasting impression of technology in classroom. Utilizing

technology regularly will help mold students into becoming technology literate. They will use

technology as an open resource to help bridge learning gaps. Students need more exposure with

the computers to overcome idleness. If students are provided with set targets and activities,

students will be successful when operating the computers. Student should also explore

collaborative learning with SMART board, the features alone will compel students’ to remain

focus and engage in the activity. With not enough equipment to assist all students’ with the same

technology tool, I will request for funding to add to the classroom. In the meantime, I will create

learning stations so that all students are utilizing some piece of technology throughout the class.

Vision

I believe technology should be in every area of students learning. The amount of free

resources available should be taken advantage of when trying to enhance the lives of the next

generation’s leaders. In my classroom, students will be exposed to technology from every aspect.

I will attempt to discover 3-4 targets per assignment to maximize students’ potential. As

mentioned, creating the learning stations will keep students actively engaged on topics and will
Beidleman CTP 4

reveal gaps of improvement. This is beneficial for both student and teacher. The time spent at the

learning stations will be timed, thus the students needing additional time will immediately

indicate a gap where the teacher can provide assistance or modify the assignment. At this time,

students will also have the opportunity to indicate what tools work for them better than the other.

This will assist in assessment preparation; teachers are able to create individual duties based on

students’ feedback and skills. Learning station will include, desktop computers, SMART board,

and Kahoot activates.

Current Technology and Uses:

As mentioned, the classroom contains a SMART board and 10 desktops computers.

Teachers also can request Chromebook carts to supplement their instruction. Currently, the

SMART board is used to project the day’s content, such as the goals and objectives. Every so

often the teacher may send a few students to the desktops to “fill time” and locate mundane

articles related to the class. However, the article is never revisited or examined while in the

classroom. The teacher does not spend time analyzing the functions of the SMART board along

with the SMART pens to utilize it for instruction. Since the school is based on the International

Baccalaureate (IB) standards, most time is spent on rigorous academics and “book work”.

The goal of the IB program is to make students 21st learners and to prepare them to

compete in a global society. I want students to have structured time to use technology to increase

their technical skills and writing ability. Students should have the opportunity to maximize the

resources provided in addition to the teacher. The teacher should create lesson plans that

coincide with the SMART board functions. The SMART board allows teachers to convert their

writing to text. This one features opens up a multitude of practice and individualized learning.

From this one feature, I want the teacher to expand this opportunity to saving and sharing it to

class drive and for students with special needs, to their individual drive so they can refer to for

practice and enhancement.

Additional Technology:

I am recommending the teacher takes advantage of the Chromebook cart already

provided to increase instruction and spark creativity. Upon completing the SMART board

activities, students can use the Chromebooks to personally access the content that was saved and

sent to them. Student can create their own google accounts to further increase technology skills.
Beidleman CTP 6

In the google account, student will be able to create their own documents, share and edit to use as

a resource. Student will also be able to work collaboratively using the google docs feature. They

will be able to incorporate their perspectives on content and learn how to conceptualize a plan

with this feature. These skills will benefit the implementation of the Chromebooks on a regularly

scheduled basis.

Professional Development

Professional development must be taken more seriously as the influx of technology

continues to rise. I want the teacher to focus on the basis of the classroom resource to then spark

interest in implementing technology on a consistent basis. The goal of PD will always be to

impact the lives of students, in doing so I recommend the following:

1. Joining a professional organization which purpose is driven on enhancing the lives of

students with technology. Such organization may include “Powering up with

Technology” this organization welcomes all teachers and educators from all stages.

This organization conducts workshops that maximizes technology and for those who

do not have access technology. They supply material on how to gain technology and

help with beneficial free opportunities to utilize. They also use the SMART boards in

their presentations, thus teachers will be able to learn the basics to develop skills in

the classroom.

2. Taking classes at the University of Maryland University College. There is a program

for teachers and educators there that will befit classroom instruction. The program

introduces innovative technologies and creates virtual and blended learning

environments to empower educators so students can impact society. The program is

Beidleman CTP 7

cost friendly and most employers in the educational realm provide tuition assistance

for coverage. The teacher will complete the certificate portion of the program.

3. Create social media accounts to follow trends in the instructional education industry.

I want the teacher to build their own personal learning community. This PD will

enhance the teacher’s skill with using some of the applications that may be

implemented in instruction. The learning community can be extend globally the

teacher may have the opportunity to glean from global educators in their same content

area. The teacher can potentially use the connection to introduce other cultures in the

classroom virtually. With the technology learned from the community, the teacher

will invite different perspectives from an array of cultures to provide instruction for

their students.

Timeline:

The timeline will take place from the beginning of the summer of the new school year until the
end of the school year. Each PD opportunity will take up to 12 weeks to complete.

Budget and Implementation

The budget is seamless because the majority of the recourses have already been provided

due to the IB program funding. Therefore, this presentation will take advantage of its resources

by cutting cost.

Evaluation

The success of the plan will be solely based on the students’ first mentality. Once the

experienced teachers recognize the ultimate goal is about the ones we service, the plan will work.

The evaluation plan will include:

 Administration taking a role in conducting bi-monthly observations to ensure

technology is being implemented.

Beidleman CTP 10

 Refresher trainings will be conducted quarterly to maintain teacher’s confidence.

The training will be held in-house to cut cost and to remain accountable to

administration if additional PD is needed.

 Online professional webinars to keep teachers involved with technology. Teachers

will be responsible for downloading WebEx and joining the 1hour long

presentation. Upon completion, the teacher will have to presents their findings to

administration.
