Please support all our sponsors with your patronage because they support us, and without them
NDLAC would not be as successful as we are, our fees would be higher, and we would not be able
to offer such a great awards scheme or other benefits.
Please let our sponsors know that you appreciate their support of your children’s sport.

4 Welcome to NDLAC for 2015-16

Hello and welcome to Little Athletics season 2015/16.

If you are new to Northern Districts Little Athletics Centre (NDLAC) or new to Little Athletics (Little
A’s) I am confident that you will enjoy what we represent. Now in our thirty-fourth season, while we
are not the biggest club around we certainly hold our heads high in regard to the respect we are
shown both on the field and off.
If you are one of our many families that are returning for another season, you already know what a
great little club we have and I welcome you back for another great season. May I encourage you to
make any of our new families welcome and assist them wherever possible.
Being new to anything in life can often be a bit confusing or even a bit confronting and Little A’s is
no different, however all our athletes and their families have all been there and generally we have
all survived with most still limbs intact.
Each Saturday morning (with a few exceptions) we come together as a community to enjoy
watching our children (our Little Athletes) build friendships, have fun and get fit. On a personal level
as a parent I enjoy nothing more than being an instrumental part of my children’s growth and
development in all parts of their life, and Little A’s ticks all those boxes for me.
With an emphasis on self-improvement and achieving new personal bests, Little A’s has many
levels that your children can aspire to reach. At NDLAC we have carefully developed awards to
recognise the achievement of every child, of every level of ability. For those Athletes that excel in
any given area, depending on age, there may be the opportunity of progressing to anywhere from
Zone to National level of competition. In very recent years NDLAC has even seen Athletes compete,
and medal, on an International level.
In comparison to many other kids sports Little A’s requires a greater level of involvement on a
regular basis by the parents or carers of the athletes. The ability to stand with your children, walk
around the competition area between events and be close enough to feel the emotions that come
with success and disappointment is unique to NDLAC, and we encourage you to do so every week.
The success of Little A’s is very dependent on your personal involvement in the running of events.
Everyone involved with our centre is a volunteer, including all Key Officials and committee
members. While it is not expected that all families are involved in the operation to the extent of this
very dedicated team of people it is a requirement that one member every family ‘sign on’ to assist
on every second week of your athlete’s attendance. If you are new to Little A’s, rest assured that
there is a role suitable to everyone regardless of experience or knowledge of an event. With the
opportunity to move between roles from week to week you will gain a greater understanding of all
events that your children will participate in. If you have, or develop an interest in a particular event
you may wish to take on a local Key Official role at a later stage, please let us know if this is the
case and we will start you down that path.
In recent years as a token of appreciation we offer a modest discount of $50 on the season
registration to families where the parents or carers fulfilled roles as a Key Official either on
Saturdays or at Zone and Regional championship carnivals. If you have a personal interest in any
particular specialisation we would be happy to assist you in gaining accreditation to act as an official
at external Little A’s championship events such as Zone and Region. During the 2014/15 season a
number of our parents or carers became accredited and we encourage you do the same.
In the ‘off season’ Little Athletics NSW has implemented changes to javelin and high jump which will
commence this season. Commencing immediately U11 athletes will now be able to do javelin
(previously this event was only available from U12 onwards), as a result we have added this as an
early event for this age group, please check the weekly program for more details.
Also, while U9 has always been the starting age for high jump there has been change to the
jumping style permitted in these age groups. All U9 athletes will now be required to jump using the
scissor technique and as a result of this change a new thinner landing mat is required. With this in
mind NDLAC has purchased new set of high jump mats specifically for the U9 age groups.
To keep abreast of all things athletics I encourage you to regularly visit the Northern Districts Little
Athletics website, take the time to read our Newsletters and sign up to the Northern Districts Little
Athletics Facebook page; these are our most reliable and therefore main methods of
communication. In addition, another valuable website to save to your favourites is the Little Athletics
NSW site.
Above all, have an enjoyable Summer of Athletics, line up for every event each week and may your
personal bests be plentiful.

5 Competition meetings

5.1 Where?
Competition meetings are held at Foxglove Oval, Foxglove Road, Mt Colah.
(UBD map 114, ref A13; Gregory’s map 162, ref F13)

5.2 When?
Commencing on Saturday 12 September 2015, competition meetings will be held from 8.15am to
approximately 11.30am
For the first week of competition we are running a modified program. This includes regular running,
jumping and throwing events. This initial program will provide an orientation for new families and a
refresher for returning families on how NDLAC competition meets work. Early events will be run as
per program 1 (javelin & walks) from 7.45am.
Competition meets will not be held at Foxglove Oval on 28 November 2015, 12 December 2015, or
13 February 2016 due to State Relays, Zone and Regional Championships.
The last meeting before Christmas is 5 December 2015. A full competition meeting will be held as it
will be followed by Zone Championships the following week. However there still might be a
Christmas visit from someone special!
Our first two meetings for 2016 will be held in the twilight under floodlights on Friday nights 8 and 15
January 2016 starting from 5.45 pm. Meetings return to Saturday mornings on 23 January 2016.
5.3 Programs and events
The weekly competition meets follow the six competition programs listed in this booklet at
section 15. The programs will follow the correct order, even if a week is missed as a result of wet
weather. Changes may be made to the programs from time to time to improve the running of
competition meets.

5.4 Early events

Javelin (for U11 to U17s) and race walking (for U9 to U17s) events are held as optional early events
in programs 1, 3 and 5 from 7.45am. The combined U13 to U17 3000m race is also an optional
event that will take place in programs 2, 4 and 6 from 7.45am. Please refer to the competition
programs at section 15.

5.5 Proof of age and age groups

Athletes registering with the Centre for the first time must produce proof-of-age documentation at
the time of registration in the form of a birth certificate or passport. The age group for an athlete is
determined by the age the athlete will be on 30 September in the year of registration.

5.6 Trialling athletes

If families want to give Little Athletics a go before committing, you are invited to participate in a free
one-week trial at any of the NDLAC September competition meets. If you wish to continue to
compete, the participant must become a registered and financial NDLAC athlete. Prior to taking part
in a trial meet, trial athletes must complete a trial athlete form for insurance purposes.

5.7 Rules
Centre meetings are conducted under the Rules of Competition of Little Athletics NSW (LANSW)
together with local Centre rules approved by the NDLAC Committee. Links to these rules can be
found on the NDLAC website.
At NDLAC competition meets a copy of the NDLAC rules are held by each Age Manager and the
Track & Field Officer. A copy of the LANSW Rules of Competition is also be held by the Track &
Field Officer.

5.8 Records
When an athlete breaks a Centre Record, the new record measurement must be checked and
verified by the Key Official concerned and the Track & Field Officer (or approved delegate). Unless
electronic timing has been used, track records will only be recognised if there are two (2) OFFICIAL
stopwatches on the athlete setting the record, with the slower time being the recorded time.
Electronic times will be recognised as ‘equal records’ if they are within 0.3 seconds of superior
hand-timed records as long as no faster electronic times have already been set.
Records will only be ratified if the athlete is wearing the correct NDLAC uniform, including
registration, age and sponsor patches. Records are not to be treated lightly, and these rules will be
adhered to in all circumstances. New records are announced over the PA system as soon as
possible after the event, and record certificates are issued to the athletes as soon as practicable.

5.9 Mixed age groups

To protect the relative integrity of athletes’ track performances during the season, athletes should
compete in their own age group.
Generally Centre Records, Season Bests and Personal Bests will not be recognised where more
than one age group (or both boys and girls) have participated.
The only exceptions to this rule are as follows:
All walking events: U9G, U9B (700m); U10G, U10B, U11G, U11B (1100m); U12G, U12B, U13G,
U13B, U14G, U14B, U15G, U15B, U17G and U17B (1500m).
3000m run: U13G, U13B, U14G, U14B, U15G, U15B, U17G and U17B.
1500m girls-only run: U13G, U14G, U15G and U17G
1500m boys-only run: U13B, U14B, U15B and U17B
800m girls-only run: U14G, U15G and U17G.
800m boys-only run: U14B, U15B and U17B.
U15 girls & U17 girls track events: These events may be combined. However, if there are three or
more U15 girls AND three or more U17 girls competing that day, not necessarily in the same heat,
then separate U15G and U17G races must be held.
U15 boys & U17 boys track events: These events may be combined. However, if there are three
or more U15 boys AND three or more U17 boys competing that day, not necessarily in the same
heat, then separate U15B and U17B races must be held.
Mixed age field events are permitted, so long as each athlete uses the correct throwing implement
weight for their age group.

5.10 Weather
In the event of wet weather or poor ground conditions, the Track & Field Officer will make a physical
inspection of Foxglove Oval with a view to deciding whether to compete or not by 7.30am. So as not
to cancel competitions unnecessarily, a final decision may be deferred until 8.30am or so to allow
for any local showers to dissipate.
The NDLAC website and Facebook page will provide current information about any cancellations of
Saturday competitions or Thursday training sessions.
Alternatively, you can call 1900 95 90 15 and follow the prompts for messages about Saturday
morning competitions (0 then 1) or Thursday afternoon training sessions (0 then 2). All calls cost 77
cents, including GST.

5.11 First Aid

On-site First Aid will be provided at each meeting. A number of parents are qualified First Aiders.
If a child is injured enough to warrant on the spot medical attention or treatment, then she/he should
not compete in any further events that morning. All injuries should be immediately reported to the
First Aid assistants, including injuries sustained at training.
Athletes who suffer from asthma should carry inhalers with them at all times. The athlete’s parents
must ensure the Age Manager concerned is aware of the athlete’s condition and knows where the
athlete’s inhaler is kept. Inhalers should be used by these athletes prior to events or if asthma
occurs during competition.

6 Training

6.1 Where and when?

Training and coaching will be available to all registered Centre athletes on Thursday nights at
Foxglove Oval, 5.30pm to 7.30pm from 8 October (after daylight saving commences – to be
confirmed).
Please check the website for more details closer to the date.
6.2 Training program
The emphasis at training will be on fun, activity and physical and technical skill development, with
differing amounts of time dependent upon the age of the athlete. It is very important that athletes
give themselves the best opportunity to develop and achieve their potential by preparing for
competition.
Training is not just for the elite or gifted, it is open for all registered athletes. While attendance is not
compulsory, you are strongly encouraged to participate as part of your Little Athletics schedule.
All events are covered on a rotating basis from week to week. Athletes are encouraged to develop
skills in all events. There will be minimal opportunities for athletes to get technical advice on
Saturdays due to the tight time constraints at each event.

6.3 Coaching courses

LANSW regularly organises courses to train athletes from older age groups, age managers and
parents or who wish to coach. NDLAC may pay the cost of this course if the participant makes an
undertaking to assist with coaching for the Centre on a semi-regular basis.
Participation in a training program is a great way to learn to be involved in your child’s athletics and
to build your knowledge and confidence in a variety of parental assistance roles.
Watch our website and Facebook pages for current information, or contact the Training Co-ordinator
if you have any specific questions or requirements.

6.4 Borrowing equipment

We understand that equipment can be expensive and we encourage keen athletes to borrow
equipment for practice.
If you want to borrow equipment, please request from the Track & Field Officer, Equipment Officer,
Coaching Coordinator or Chairperson, and not from Age Managers, Key Officials or other
Committee members.
Equipment can only be borrowed on Saturdays between 11.30am and 12pm and must be returned
between 8am and 8.30am on the next competition Saturday.
For the benefit of all athletes, it is important that we keep track of NDLAC equipment. You will be
asked to pay a small deposit (typically $5) on each item borrowed. The deposit will be returned if the
equipment is returned on time to one of the approved committee members listed above, otherwise
the deposit will be forfeited to the Centre.
You will be responsible for repair of any damage to equipment that you borrow, and the
replacement of any equipment that is lost or irreparably broken.

7 Uniforms

7.1 Clothing
Our uniform is a royal blue singlet with white trim worn with white shorts (no logos or stripes
allowed) for boys and a royal blue/white singlet worn with royal blue/white short pants for girls. It
must be worn by all athletes when competing.
Tights or compression pants (if worn under the shorts) must be black and not extend below the
knee. A plain white t-shirt may be worn under the singlet to provide extra sun protection or warmth.
Socks, if worn, must be white.

CENTRE NUMBER 157

The 157 Centre Number (not shown in the photo) must be attached to the rear of the
singlet in a central, easy to read location. It is compulsory for Under 7 to 17 athletes to
have the Centre Number attached when competing in all external events and
championships. Centre Numbers will be provided to athletes attending external
championships prior to those events.

7.2 Shoes and spikes

All athletes must wear appropriate footwear at all times.
Athletes in the U13 to U17 age groups may wear spikes in all track events except for walks. Spikes
for U11 to U12 age groups are restricted to track events run entirely in lanes (i.e. up to 400m, but
excludes local 400m heats using a ‘pack’ start formation).
All U11 to U17 athletes may also use spikes when competing in long, triple and high jumps and for
javelin.
To protect the vinyl covers of our high jump mats, only ‘pin’ (needle-shaped) or ‘compression tier’
(also known as ‘Christmas tree’) spikes are permitted for high jump. This means the common
‘pyramid’ (cone-shaped) are banned from high jump events at Foxglove, but may be used for other
events.

Athletes in U10 and younger age groups may not wear spikes under any circumstances. Athletes
must not wear spiked shoes with the spikes removed in any event.
For the safety of everybody within and outside the oval, all athletes must remove their spikes
immediately upon completion of each event and only put them on again when they have arrived at
their next event.
The maximum spike length at Foxglove is 9mm for long and triple jump and 12mm for all other
events. However, most athletes will find 7mm spikes suitable for all events which can also be used
on synthetic tracks at Narrabeen and Homebush.

8 Little Athletics Association championships

8.1 Selection
Athletes’ performances on Saturday morning competitions will be used to select NDLAC
representative teams for State Relays (U8 to U17) and Zone Championships (U7 to U12).
Parental assistance is required for all of the following championships. Rosters will be arranged.
The following details are provisional and should be confirmed closer to the date.

8.2 State Relay Championships.

This Team event will be held on 28 and 29 November 2015 at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre,
Homebush. U8s to U11s usually compete on the Saturday and U12s to U17s on the Sunday. This
meet is open to all Centres in NSW and is claimed to be the biggest athletic event in the Southern
Hemisphere.

Athletes compete in Track or Field Relays, in NDLAC Teams selected from each Age Group, with
results based on the combined team performance. NDLAC team selections will be announced
on Saturday 31 October 2015.

Families must advise the Championships Team if athletes are available for selection (i.e. opt-in for
selection consideration) prior to Saturday 24 October via email on champs@ndlac.org.au. Families
will be notified of selection by email on Saturday 31 October 2015.

8.3 Zone Championships

Zone Championships will be held on 12 and 13 December 2015 at Narrabeen. Other Centres
competing within the North-East Metropolitan Zone are Manly-Warringah, Ku-ring-gai, Mosman and
Hornsby.
Athletes U7 to U12 compete in a maximum of 4 events each. Athletes in the U13 to U17 are
permitted to compete in a maximum of 6 events of their choosing. Selections will be announced on
Saturday 7 November 2015.
The first three placegetters in U7 events receive medals. The first six placegetters in U8 to U17
events automatically qualify for the Regional Championships as will the next four best performances
in finals from our Zone and from the North Metropolitan Zone.

8.4 Regional Championships

This event will be held on 13 and 14 February 2016 at Narrabeen (Region ‘5’). The program has
mostly the same running order as Zone Championships but is subject to change.
Athletes U8 to U17 compete in events for which they qualified at Zone Championships. The first
three placegetters in all events receive medals. The first two placegetters in U9 to U17 events
automatically qualify for the State Championships as will the next eight best performances in finals
across the eight Regional Championships.
8.5 State Championships
This event will be held 18 to 20 March 2016 at Homebush.
The program of events will be listed on the LANSW website and any athlete progressing to State
Championships will need to check the program which will be different to the Zone and Regional
Championships. Some events will be contested on the Friday night.
Athletes U9 to U17 compete in the events for which they qualified at Regional Championships. The
first three placegetters in all events receive medals.
U13s may be selected for the NSW Team for the Australian Teams Championships, to be held in
April 2016 (location to be confirmed).

8.6 Trans-Tasman Challenge

This event is open to all U11 and U12 athletes. Selection trials will likely be held in November 2015,
with a closing date for entry to the trials in October 2015.
This season the Challenge will be held in New Zealand in January 2016. Further information will be
made available to eligible athletes as it becomes available.

8.7 State Multi-Event

This event will be held on 5 and 6 of March 2016 in Dubbo. It is open to all registered athletes from
U7 to U17. Entries are expected to close in early February via the LANSW website, but check closer
to the date.
This is a multiple-event competition, like the Pentathlon, where points are awarded for
performances and the total point score determines the final rankings. The events offered depend on
the age group. Under 15s may be selected for the NSW Team for the Australian Multi-Event
Championships, to be held in Perth in April 2016, venue to be confirmed.

8.8 State Cross-Country & Road Walking Championships

This event will be held on Sunday 3 July 2016 at a regional location, to be confirmed.
NDLAC athletes traditionally perform well at these championships in both individual and team
events. As this event is held in the ‘off season’ we leave it up to families to submit entries and
organise optional teams of three for specific age groups. Entries close in June 2016 via the LANSW
website.
Athletes intending to compete at these championships are encouraged to attend some of our cross-
country warm-up races on Sundays during May and June. These also provide a meeting point for
parents putting together age group based teams.

8.9 Gala Days of other Little Athletics Centres

Many other Little Athletics Centres run Gala Days for which an athlete pays an entry fee and can
compete in events of his or her choice with the chance to win a medal.
NDLAC athletes often attend Gala Days in our area such as Blacktown and Baulkham Hills. More
details will be made available during throughout the season.

8.10 NDLAC winter cross-country season

The NDLAC Winter Cross-Country Season will continue in 2016 after three successful seasons.
Registered Tiny Tots through to open athletes compete over distances ranging from 500m to 3km
on Sunday afternoons at Foxglove Oval.
The season runs on Sunday afternoons, commencing on 8 May 2016 and concludes with a
handicap race on 26 June 2016. These events are excellent warm-ups for both the school cross-
country season and LANSW championships in early July.

9 Parental assistance

9.1 General requirements

Parents are the backbone of Little Athletics. Without parents there would be no Little Athletics. For
athletics to be as enjoyable as possible, it is important that it is well run. This can only happen if
enough parents are present each Saturday morning to assist at the different events, enabling the
children to compete and have their performances measured and recorded.
Different Centres have different systems, depending upon the size of their membership base and
the structure of any clubs within the Centre. We require that one parent from each family be
available to assist at least every second Saturday that their children attend. Please don't wait to be
asked to offer your assistance. The success of the Centre depends on you.
No previous experience is needed. All training is on-the-job under the oversight of our Key Officials,
who are also parents of athletes like you.
The athletes like to see their parents participating and parents get a better appreciation of their
children's accomplishments by being involved themselves. It is also an opportunity to meet other
parents and enjoy the inclusive, friendly and team atmosphere at our Centre.
You are encouraged to ask questions and discuss any aspect of the policy that you do not
understand with a committee member.

9.2 Failure to contribute

As part of the registration process you, as parents, will have signed a form, committing to assisting
the Centre with running events at all competitions in which your children are involved. This includes
Centre and LANSW championship meets.
Unfortunately, every season there are a small group of families which consistently fail or refuse to
volunteer to assist on Saturdays. This makes it very difficult to run the program efficiently. Further, it
is unfair to the parents that do assist.
If an athlete’s parents fail to fulfil their assistance commitment the following penalties will be
considered by the committee:
• If a family does not sign on and assist on at least two (2) Saturdays by 17 October 2015,
children may not be eligible for selection in the State Relay championships
(28-29 November).
• If a family does not sign on and assist on at least three (3) Saturdays by 31 October 2015,
children may not be eligible for selection in the Zone championships (12-13 December).
• If a family does not sign on and assist on at least half (50 per cent) of the weeks that their
children attend competitions at Foxglove Oval, then the Centre’s committee may withhold
any trophies or awards gained by all registered members of the family.
We understand that there are some situations where a parent can genuinely not assist, for whatever
reason. In these exceptional circumstances we will attempt to make alternative arrangements to
help you fulfil your parental assistance requirement. Please speak with the Officer for Assistants
Saturdays if this circumstance applies to you. Any arrangements from last season must be
renegotiated if circumstances are unchanged.
9.3 Centre events
At each Saturday meeting we require assistance from approximately 80 people to undertake a
range of tasks. Helpers from each age group are needed to ensure the smooth running of events. If
there are insufficient helpers events may have to be removed from the program.
Some of the positions to be filled each week include:
• equipment set up and put-away;
• Age Managers;
• timekeepers, measurers, judges and assistants for track and field events;
• data entry in the computer room (out of the sun!);
• canteen operations, BBQ chefs, raffle ticket sellers;
• Key Officials and starters (if you have an interest or experience in a particular area or would
like to learn more speak to a Committee member).
Key Officials and Age Managers should wear the Centre polo shirt.

9.4 Other championships

Parents of athletes attending LANSW events must accept some responsibility to enable their
children to compete. Parents whose children qualify or are selected for the State Relays, Zone,
Region and State Championships will be expected to contribute to the Centre’s assistance
obligations at that event. Duties are generally light and require no specific skill sets.
For State Relays this generally involves ensuring the athletes attend training and competition days,
it also includes supporting the athlete and coach for the benefit of, and commitment to, the team.
Parents are in a unique position. Of all the people their children know, they are the most influential
on their child’s attitude and behaviour towards this team event. In addition parental assistance will
also be required on both competition days. However unless you have athletes competing on both
days you will only be required once.
At Zone, Region and State Championships we have responsibilities as a registered Centre at these
Championships. This is a requirement of LANSW. Our Centre policy states that entries will only be
accepted if a parent/carer agrees to help at the event.
A roster will be emailed and posted on the notice board on the weeks leading up to Zone for parents
to nominate their preferred duty and time slot. A failure to nominate will result in a duty and time
being allocated by the Officer for Representative Assistants. Your refusal to assist may result in your
child being withdrawn.

9.5 Saturday set up

Each week one age group will be assigned to assist setting up the equipment.
Parents who have children in the designated age group need to be at Foxglove Oval at 7.30am on
their assigned week. Parents must sign on, then assist with setting up the high jump bags and
stands, the hurdles, long jump equipment and erecting shade shelters.
The Equipment Officer or their representative will be present to give guidance. This set up
requirement is in addition to the general parental assistance requirement.
Each age group is generally rostered twice during the season to assist in the setup of the
equipment.
9.6 Signing on
All Key Officials, Age Managers and assistants must report to the sign on table upon arrival. Parents
must sign on due to a requirement of our insurance cover and for our own records. If you don’t sign
on, we don’t know you’ve helped out!
Parents who have signed on to assist at an event should ensure they are present at the event and
introduce themselves to the event’s Key Official prior to the athletes arriving to allow the event to
start on time.

10 Other information

10.1 NDLAC website

The NDLAC website is www.ndlac.org.au.
Please add it to you favourites or bookmarks now and remember to check it frequently throughout
the season.
Parents and athletes are encouraged to refer to the website for general reference information,
contact details for Committee members, updates to the season’s calendar, copies of our newsletter,
links to other athletics sites, photos, and other topical items and late breaking news.
Athletes' results data is available for viewing online at our website after each meeting. We
encourage athletes to track their results online once the season begins.
You can also find useful information on the LANSW website at www.lansw.com.au.

10.2 Facebook
The NDLAC Facebook page can be found by searching for ‘Northern Districts Little Athletics Centre’
or by following the link on the NDLAC website.
Following NDLAC on Facebook will give you access to regular updates, links and breaking news.

10.3 On Track weekly newsletter

The NDLAC weekly newsletter On Track is an invaluable source of information during the season. A
copy of On Track will be sent each week to all athletes/families who provided an email address at
time of registration.
Please take a few moments of your time to read the newsletter each week as it may contain
important information for athletes. A copy of the previous week’s On Track will also be posted on the
noticeboard.
If you would like to contribute an article of news or photos, please send an email to the Publicity
Officer at news@ndlac.org.au or place it in the Age Manager’s Reports red box at the sign-on desk
on Saturday mornings. All contributions are welcome.

10.4 Wet weather cancellations

The main source of information about wet weather cancellations will be the NDLAC website and
Facebook page.
Alternatively, you can call 1900 95 90 15 and follow the prompts for messages about Saturday
morning competitions (0 then 1) or Thursday afternoon training sessions (0 then 2). All calls cost 77
cents, including GST. Generally, decisions to cancel Saturday competitions will not be made until
7.30am, after weather and ground conditions have been reviewed.
10.5 Disputes and concerns
If you have any concerns over any aspect of the Centre, please refer to the information contained in
the sections titled Parental Role and Code of Behaviour.
NDLAC Committee Member contact details are also provided at the back of this booklet. You are
encouraged to communicate any concerns and ask any questions.

10.6 Sun sense

On many competition days, athletes will encounter hot, sunny conditions. They should be protected
by application of a suitable sunscreen, and by wearing a hat and possibly loose, cool clothing in
addition to their athletics uniform. They should drink plenty of water, to avoid dehydration. On some
days, they may need up to one cup of water every 30 minutes.

10.7 Smoke-free zone

Foxglove Oval and clubhouse is a smoke-free zone in accordance with Hornsby Council’s Smoke-
Free Environment policy. Smoking is banned anywhere on the oval and within 10 metres of the
playground and clubhouse/toilets.

10.8 Dogs
It is a condition of our ground hire agreement with Hornsby Council that no dogs be allowed on the
oval or near the clubhouse while NDLAC events are being conducted. Please leave your beloved
pet at home on Saturday mornings.
This advice is important because some of our younger children get frightened near unfamiliar
animals and many dogs can become distressed by the thunder-like sounds from our starting pistols.
Your assistance in this matter is appreciated.

10.9 Parental supervision

Each athlete attending any NDLAC or LANSW event must have a parent or carer at the venue from
the time they arrive until the time they leave the event.
Athletes whose parents leave them unattended at events may be removed from competition and, for
continued breaches of this policy, may be asked to leave the Centre.
If for some reason a parent absolutely must leave the venue, a contact number and estimated time
of return must be given to the Age Manager as well as the details of another adult who is
designated as a temporary guardian. This guardian would assume the responsibility to look after the
athlete if the competition finishes earlier than expected and to seek medical/hospital attention for the
athlete in the event of illness or injury. Age Managers are not expected to accept the duties of
temporary guardian if asked.

11 Parental role

Your child is in a sport that provides an opportunity for many immediate and long-term benefits. The
benefits include high levels of fitness, better health, a pleasurable social environment and the
satisfaction derived from skilled performance. Little Athletics can provide a launching pad for a life-
long involvement in sport, be it elite or purely recreational.
Just as important as any of the above benefits is that Little Athletics provides children with the
chance to have fun — to play. Please do not ever lose sight of this. Unfortunately, all of the
potential benefits of involving a child in a sport can be quickly lost due to one very important factor
— adults.
Do not underestimate the effect that you can have on your child’s long term participation in and
enjoyment of sport. By taking a considered, understanding approach, a parent can be their child’s
most valuable asset. On the other hand, parents who bribe, threaten punishment, push their child or
hang over the fence screaming, have totally lost a true understanding of Little Athletics. Fortunately,
as Denis Baker terms them in his book Winning is Kids Stuff, these ‘clowns’ are few and far
between. You must realise however, that you don’t have to be a ‘screamer’ to have a subtle
negative effect on your child in sport.
All too often, adults attempt to impose their own values on children's sport. Do not assume that
children play sport for the same reason that adults do. For example, when surveyed, a large number
of children list ‘beating opponents’ and ‘receiving medals and trophies’ as their last ranking of ten
enjoyment factors in sport. Children are not little adults and their sport should be free from adult
pressures and demands.
All parents should remember that Little Athletics is run by volunteers and should show respect to all
officials, as well as other parents. In the event that you as a parent or your child have an issue with
a Key Official you have no right under any circumstances to approach that official. As a responsible
parent you are to speak with your child’s Age Manager. The Age Manager may speak with the Key
Official on your behalf in an attempt to answer any query. If this is not satisfactory, you are to speak
with the Track & Field Officer. In the event that the issue you are experiencing relates to your child’s
Age Manager you should speak with the Officer for Assistants.
If an Age Manager has an issue with a Key Official, which cannot be resolved they should speak to
the Track & Field Officer. If Key Officials experience issues with Age Managers and/or
parents/children at their events, they should request the Track & Field Officer or Chairperson to
attend the event.
Remember the Key Official is the person running the event, not the Age Manager or assisting
parents.
Our Centre is governed by the policies of LANSW, which will be enforced if necessary. All parents
and athletes are expected to conform to the Code of Behaviour. Breaches of the Code may result in
you or your children being asked to leave the Centre.

12 Code of behaviour

12.1 Parents
A child’s basic training in good sportsmanship comes from home.
1. If children are interested, encourage them to participate. However, if your child is not willing,
do not force him or her.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event.
This assists your child in setting realistic goals related to his/her ability by reducing the
emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each
competition is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child to always participate according to the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember children are involved in organised sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember that children learn best by example, applauding good performance by all
athletes.
8. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than
question the officials’ judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their
time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and
resources to provide recreational activities for your child.

12.2 Athletes
It isn’t whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.
1. Compete and train for the ‘fun of it’, not just to please your parents or coach.
2. Play by the rules.
3. Never argue with the official’s decision. Let your Centre manager or coach ask any
necessary questions.
4. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’, breaking equipment, throwing implements or other
equipment.
5. Work equally for yourself and your team in relay and team events. Your team’s performance
will benefit and so will your own.
6. Be a good sport. Cheer all good performances, whether you’re club mates or you’re
opponents.
7. Treat all athletes as you would like to be treated. Don’t interfere with, bully or take unfair
advantage of any athlete.
8. Remember that the goal of training or competition is to have fun, improve your skills and feel
good. Don’t be a show-off or brag about your own performance.
9. Co-operate with your coach, club mates and opponents, for without them you don’t have a
competition.

13 Awards

13.1 Aims
NDLAC has a comprehensive awards system designed to:
• encourage and reward improvements in one's own performances
• encourage regular participation in Little Athletics from year to year
• provide awards for achieving standards in a number of events of the athlete's choice
• recognise Centre Records and Season Best performances
No awards are made for 1st-2nd-3rd in events. What is important is improving your own Personal
Bests throughout the season.

13.2 The Results Book – How do I complete it?

Each Athlete receives a Results Book during the first weeks of competition. When you receive a
Result Ticket for each event completed, you should:
Step 1: Tickets
Paste all your tickets from your first week into your result’s book on the first page. Start a new,
single page every week, even if you only did 2 or 3 events that week.

Step 2: Record of Results

You can find the Record of Results towards the back of the book. You need to complete this section
every week so the Awards Officer can determine when ribbons should be awarded.
Fill in every result you get in date order on the results pages. Do not leave any blank spaces even
if you don’t have a particular event one week or you are away.
Please do not use any highlighter on your results pages. The Awards Officer will use highlighter
when marking your books. You can write PB above your result in pencil but it is no longer necessary
for you to do this as it will be done when your book is being marked.
Example:
100 METRES
Dates 16/9 23/9 14/10 21/10 11/11 18/11 2/12
Times 17.1 17.5 16.8 17.5 16.8 16.9 16.8

Step 3: Achievement award certificates

The Achievement Award sheet is stapled to the inside of the back cover. You need to complete this
sheet every time the athlete achieves a new colour standard.
Each result may be used once only. Lower levels must be achieved before a higher level can be
awarded.
For the sprint track (50m, 70m, 100m & straight hurdles) there are now two times shown. The first is
the electronic gate time. The other (in brackets) is the hand-held time. Hand times will be issued if
there are problems with the electronic timing or the gates are unavailable. You can only use one of
these two times for a particular colour award level.

Step 4: Hand your book for marking regularly

Your book needs to be handed in approximately every 6 weeks to receive your ribbons and
certificates.
To hand your book in, place the book into the blue box near the canteen on Saturday. Your book
will be marked and returned to you the following Saturday with your ribbons and certificates inside
the envelope at the front of your book. The books can be collected from the red box also outside the
canteen.

13.3 Performance awards

Coloured Ribbons are awarded for when an athlete achieves Personal Bests.
The first time you do an event that result becomes your first standard. A Yellow Ribbon is awarded
when you achieve 5 x Personal Bests (PB) past your initial standard across all events, a Green
Ribbon is awarded for 10 PBs past your initial standard across all events, a Red Ribbon is awarded
for 20 PBs past your initial standard across all events and a Blue Ribbon is awarded for 30 PBs past
your initial standard across all events. A Purple Ribbon is awarded for 3 x PBs in a row. Other
colours are awarded for further improvements and special achievements, such as - 2 PB’s in 5
separate events during the season (Yellow), 4 PBs in a single event (Green), 6 PBs in a single
event (Red) & 2 PBs in all events offered during the season (Blue).
Ribbons are also awarded for 5 (Red) and 6 (Blue) PBs achieved in one day.
13.4 Achievement awards
Four levels of achievement are recognised by the presentation of Yellow, Green, Red and Blue
Certificates.
To receive the certificates, athletes must achieve and record certain standards in a minimum
number of events:
Under 6 any 4 events out of 11 events held
Under 7 & 8 any 5 events out of 11 events held
Under 9 any 6 events out of 13 events held
Under 10 & 11 any 6 events out of 14 events held
Under 12 any 6 events out of 15 events held
Under 13, 14, 15 & 17 any 6 events out of 17 events held
The standards are set out and can be recorded on a coloured sheet attached to the inside back
cover of the Results Book.
You will receive your Awards in the correct order, i.e. first Yellow, then Green — Red — Blue. So
you will receive your Yellow Award before you can receive your Green Award, and so on. You can
however, write a higher level result in to a higher level standard when you achieve it, but you must
go back and complete the lesser levels one by one in order before the award is granted.
A Pennant shall be awarded at Presentation Night in the colour of the highest level Achievement
Award achieved throughout the season.

13.5 Tiny Tots

The Awards system for Tiny Tots is different. Details will be provided to parents of Tiny Tots
separately in their Results Book.

13.6 Merit Awards

For each Result Ticket you receive and stick in your book, you get one point towards the Merit
Awards. The points accumulate from season to season, and Awards are made at the Annual
Presentation Night.

13.7 Season Bests

A Season Best is the best performance in the current season in an event by an age group. At the
end of the season, the Athletes holding the Season Bests receive awards.

13.8 Centre Records

Athletes who set new Centre Records will receive a certificate at the end of the season. The final
holders of records at the end of the season receive another certificate at the Annual Presentation
Night.

13.9 Champion awards

At the Annual Presentation Night, awards are made to:
• Champion Boy and Girl (and Runners-up) of each age group (see criteria below)
• Champion Boy and Girl of the Centre (see criteria below)
• Personal Best Champion Boy and Girl of each age group
• Personal Best Champion Boy and Girl of the Centre
• Garde Family Throwing Award — champion Boy and Girl thrower of the Centre
• Wayne Bingham Jumping Award — champion jumper of the Centre

• Winners of the Middle Distance Handicap Cup and the ‘Cool Runnings’ Invitational Sprint
Challenge
• Athlete Service Award Medals for completion of ten or more consecutive years at NDLAC
• Attendance awards for athletes with 100 per cent attendance for the season.
Awards for the age group champions, overall Centre champions and PB champions are determined
by a points score throughout the season.

13.10 Centre, Age and Runner-up Champion criteria

Athletes will receive one point for every event that they compete in on Saturdays at Foxglove, up to
a maximum of 100 points. The 100-point maximum will be reduced by 5 points if competition days
are cancelled for any reason.
Athletes will receive bonus points if they are the holders of any new Centre Records or Season
Bests at the end of the season.
Athletes will receive points for top-8 placings at Zone and Region Championships and for top-16
placings at the State Championships in up to four nominated events. Bonus points will be awarded
for any Zone, Region and State records set.
No points will be awarded for performances in any relays, Trans-Tasman or State Multi events.
The specific points scale for Bests, Records and Zone/Region/State performances will remain
confidential to maintain some suspense leading to our end-of-season awards.
Athletes must also meet minimum attendance criteria set out in the next section.

13.11 End of season trophies

At the end of the season, trophies will be presented to all athletes who have met the Centre criteria
for attendance and parental assistance throughout the season. As a guide, to be eligible for awards
athletes will need to have attended at least half the competition days held, including some meetings
after the mid-season break. Parental assistance requirements are detailed at Section 9 of this
handbook.

13.12 Enquiries concerning awards

If you have any questions, please contact the Awards Officer, who will be pleased to explain any
aspect of the awards system.
