Simple connection using fin plate - beam web to column web
Member details
Column Beam
Overall depth Dc = 457 mm Db = 457 mm
Breadth of flange Bfc = 190 mm Bfb = 190 mm
Bolt details
Diameter of bolt = 20 mm
Number of bolts no = 4
Number of vertical bolt rows nol = 1
Vertical spacing of bolts pitch = 70 mm
Grade of bolt Grbo = 8.8
Weld details
Weld size size = 8 mm
Design strength pw = 215 N/mm2
Detailing parameters
Top edge distance edge = 50 mm
Top end distance end = 40 mm
Beam end clearance clr = 20 mm
Fin plate first back mark cen = 50 mm
Bolt capacity
Bearing capacity of the beam web is less than the capacity of the bolt. Hence as per cl.6.3.3.3
(iii)bearing capacity per bolt in beam web
pb_bw = twb*ef*pbs_beam*0.5/1000
= 9*30*550*0.5/1000
= 74.25 kN
This resultant capacity is at the outer bolt location. As the load is transferred at the end of the beam an eccentricity factor
should be calculated to get the effective bolt capacity at the end of the beam.
Beam capacity
For short fin plates background studies have demonstrated that the resistance of the web does not need to be checked.
The resultant beam capacity is lesser of Pvbo, Pv1, P and P

Net moment of inertia is calculated by subtracting the bolt holes moment of inertia from the gross
moment of inertia of fin plate.

Note : Structural integrity checks 8 to 11 in SCI guide are not done. They should be carried out manually as and when
required.
