Arts and Entertainment in Radford
Deaf Jam; Raising awareness towards the deaf community

D
eaf Jam could be best described as an event
where powerful words did not fall on deaf ears.
Deaf Jam took place in front of the Bonnie
on April 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In these four hours,
it was full of 15 performances that encompassed from
interruptive dance to poetry translated into sign-
language to the finale consisting of a group song done
by the members of the American Sign Language Club.
At the beginning of Deaf Jam, a few performances
were of hit songs interrupted into sign-language. This
was an interesting strategy to make sign language
more familiar to the present crowd, and it kept up an
energetic vibe which is crucial for events to keep their
current crowd entertained.
Coming together for Unity Fest

his past Saturday, the second annual Unity Fest
was held in the Dedmon Center.
The event was made to bring Radford
together as one and bring awareness to several on-
campus clubs, including R-Space and Spectrum, and
organizations, including the
Diversity Awareness Program
and the Student Government
Association.
These clubs and organizations
also helped to organize and
promote Unity Fest, alongside
others such as Greek Life, the
Black Student Alliance, and the
Residential Hall Association, with
the SGA being the ‘head’ of the
event’s organization and planning.
The Reserve Officers’ Training
Corps worked as volunteers at the
event.
Other companies, such as Starshine Events, also
attended to give their other forms of entertainment
and fun, like airbrush tattoos and face-painting.
Several blow-up obstacle courses were located
around the event as well.
The event’s main stage, while playing music some
of the time, had a large emphasis on bringing on

between the ASL Club member’s performances. The
club also sold food and t-shirts to raise money.
The ASL Club had a small table that was full of
information on the club and future events. Each
member working Deaf Jam was amiable and made the
event more efficient with their hard work.
Overall, Deaf Jam’s whole atmosphere created
a certain feeling of energy that would attract any
passers-by to it. Even during the breaks, the same
energy that I felt during the past performance did not
leave the crowd.
This effect was most appreciated by the club
members running it since they had done these prior
several times during the spring semester with not
the same results. The vice president of the ASL Club,
speakers and performers with a focus on diversity.
One such speaker, Nia Naomi Johnson, a
sophomore at Radford University and self-published
author, was contacted by the SGA to recite some of her
poetry during the event.
Johnson says that her poetry speaks of “Blackness,
spirituality, culture, and real-life experiences.”
She also hopes that “Whoever’s listening can gain
something from what I’m saying.”
As well, the poem that she recited on stage mainly
focused on activism with the advice of “remind
yourself of yourself before submitting yourself to
activism,” and the beautifully written line of “We don’t
die, we multiply and change the course of history.”

Jordan Bennett, was most pleased to have a much
more massive turn out for Deaf Jam.
After an interview with Bennett, she explained the
importance of the event and how it is the first step
to battling the stigma that may follow those who are
deaf or partial hearing loss. Bennet, herself is partially
deaf which gives her a better understanding of the
sigma that deaf or partially deaf people are of lesser
intelligence or capability to take care of themselves.
With the success of this event, the students of
Radford might now see those that are deaf or partially
deaf in a different light.
Deaf Jam’s success was significant to the club and
introduced people to those that might be overlooked.
This event shined a light on them, and their passionate
voices were heard and will be remembered.

If you would like to perform an act or story related
to the event, it seems that the Unity Fest Twitter (@
RadfordUnityFest) will be open to applicants for next
year similar to how they were this year.
The event seemed particularly energetic due to its
subject matter of inclusiveness and diversity being in
direct contrast to significant changes to law and ethics
caused by the Trump administration.
Though despite these
changes, Radford still aims to be
a progressive campus/university
and this event only highlights this
strive.
Further, it shows just how
diverse the campus of Radford is,
despite the climate of the area
surrounding it.
Unity Fest is aimed to bring
the students of Radford University
together as it can be seen in the
organized photo of students
coming together to spell out
‘UNITY’ outside of Heth Hall, similar to each year’s
picture of students spelling out their graduation year.
Moreover, with the event’s aim, we can only hope
that it succeeded in building a greater community of
Radford students where they can foster love, growth,
diversity, and inclusiveness. Alternatively, at the very
least, let some students make new friends.

his week’s Metal and Jewelry Show is a
testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the
university’s students.
The pieces created by the students ranged from
earrings to necklaces to small sculptures. The detail
and care put in the jewelry are awe-inspiring.  Each
one is lovingly handmade with materials like copper,
silver, and in some cases, geodes and precious stones.
Carol Lawrence’s Owl Comb and Snake Comb are
with snakeskin agate, a type of crystal.
Reilly Gordon’s Phoenix is a masterpiece of bronze,
glass, and crystals. As soon as you walk into the room,
the small, shiny bird catches your attention. Its eyes
are the most attractive feature, made with red crystals
that show off the bird’s mythological origin.
Joan Maldovan’s use of amethyst in her piece, only
named Pendant, complimented the silver metalwork
nicely. The stone in the center of the necklace truly
diversity creates a visually exciting and mesmerizing
collection of work that one must see for themselves.
And, if you would like to see it for yourself, the
show is hosted in Porterfield Gallery 205. The gallery
is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closes
from noon until 1 p.m. The show will be running until
Thursday, April 12th.

Radford’s Got Talent!

inging, dancing, and musical prowess headlined
Radford’s talent show this week.
Fourteen acts ranging from popular song
performances to original music to bombastic dance
routines all went head to head in a competition to
discover which Radford students have the skills and
creativity to come out on top.
N’Taezha Davis, president of R-Space, played the
role of master of ceremonies, and her intermediary
commentary riled up the audience for each performer.
It was her job to make sure every student was
confident enough to come out on stage and to be met
with a warm and wild welcome.
A good chunk of the acts was made up of one or
two people who could either sing, play an instrument,
or both, and wanted to display that talent.
Every act was put on stage in front of three faculty
judges from various departments. Then they doled out
the first, second, and third place trophies at the end of
the show.
With an acoustic guitar and a flannel shirt, Bruce
Landis walked out on stage, plugged into an amplifier,
and sang a song he wrote himself. He sang about
the nostalgia of simpler times and love with a girl that
wore just as much flannel as he did.
In a very different genre, Maya Baldwin sang a slow,
emotional song dedicated to her mother. “Honeybee”
by Zee Avi reminds her of her mother, she said. She
would always sing it for her.
The feeling behind the song clearly passed on
to the audience. Not every act garnered this much
reverence, but she made the entire audience fall silent.
Baldwin won third place for her performance.

Be careful with me
I think that it is pretty apparent that the song is
about her fiancé Offset (of the rapper trio, Migos) who
has been caught cheating on her. I do however think
that it is good that Cardi B revealed this side of her
and showed her fans that she can be softer and that
she does have feelings.
Overall, I enjoyed listening to Cardi B’s new
album. It is extremely explicit, but I think that she is
developing as a rapper and that she can only continue
to get better.
My favorite song is “I Like It” which features Bad
Bunny and J Balvin. It is a fun song, with a good beat.
I cannot wait to see what else Cardi B does with her
career, and how/if her lyrics will change once she has
a baby.

The Weeknd is one of my favorite music artists, and
he released his EP, My Dear Melancholy, on March 30.
Many fans felt like his EP was reminiscent of
the way his old music used to be like on Kissland or
Trilogy. Some criticize his new music, like the tracks
on Starboy as not being his best work because of the
vibe of the songs.
On Kissland and Trilogy, his songs are raw and
uncut. He does not hide his emotions or feelings.
Starboy is kind of like a pop album, which I did not
have a problem with because I still felt like it was a
good album.
I do have to admit though My Dear Melancholy,
has an entirely different feeling from Starboy. It is sad
and really raw. He did not hold anything back about
how his break up with Selena Gomez (and I think parts
were about his other ex Bella Hadid too).
One lyric that stands out to many others is when
he said, “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life,”
in his song “Call Out My Name.” It is well known that
Selena Gomez needed a kidney transplant sometime
last year, so I think that is what The Weeknd was
referring to when he said those lyrics.
The Weeknd opened himself up on My Dear
Melancholy, and even as a celebrity I feel like it takes
a lot as a person to be that open about yourself to the
world, especially something so personal. As a dancer
though, I relate to using your art form as a way to cope
with certain situations.
I cannot wait to see what other music will drop in
the coming days, weeks, and months.

ummer is almost approaching,
and there’ll be those days of just
wanting to lay down on your couch
with a bowl of popcorn, and do nothing
but to watch a good movie.
I have got you covered with some
of the best animation movies to enjoy
watching on Netflix with friends, family
or even by yourself but for this first one,
you may want to keep the lights on.
Coraline is a fantasy/thriller which
follows the character Coraline Jones
(Dakota Fanning) who is an 11-year-
old girl who just moved from Michigan
to Oregon with her mom and dad. Her
parents are very busy writers; they do
not pay that much attention to Coraline,
so she feels alone and neglected.
After many desperate attempts to
get their attention, Coraline decides
to explore her surroundings until she
finds a mysterious door inside her house
that leads her to a world parallel to
hers which has everything she needs
and wants out of friends and family but
maybe more than you expected.
Next up, if you have not watched
the Netflix original movie of The
Little Prince, I can guarantee you the
satisfaction of excitement and joy after
you watch this masterpiece.
The Little Prince is about a Little
Girl (Mackenzie Foy) who does not live
the life that she supposed to be living
as a girl her age. She does everything
in time, her day is organized to a T,
and her life is completely and utterly
planned all thanks to her Mother
(Rachel McAdams); Like mother, like
daughter.
will be the reason she rebels against the
rules that her mother set for her. The

Prince has kind of a kid imagination
which he uses in an effort to show the

The movie has special moments that
will emotionally move you while the
story profoundly tries to convey that
adults usually tend to forget about their
special moments and forget to live a
beautiful life.
Next, some people have enjoyed
watching the 2017 movie, The Baby
Boss and other not so much.
Personally, I loved this animation.
I would call it the perfect fantasy and
comedy to enjoy with your family.
The Baby Boss is about a kid named
Tim, played by Tobey Maguire and
Miles Christopher Bakshi, who lives a
beautiful and peaceful life with his Mom
(Lisa Kudrow) and Dad (Jimmy Kimmel)
until they hit him with news of having a
new baby, a Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin).
The voice performance of every
character was perfectly convincing
regarding the movie’s depiction of the
war over their parents’ love.
Lastly, Finding Dory will last forever
as a classic that people will never get
tired of watching. The lost blue fish
starring Ellen DeGeneres suffers from
a short-term memory loss and tries
desperately to find her family with the
help of her friends.
I’m calling Finding Dory one of
my favorite animated movies of all time.

The Highlanders kept up their trend
of slow starts, giving up two runs from
two hits in the top of the 1st after a

found his way to third base before
another freshman in Kendall McGowan
launched a ball over the fence for a
two-run home run off of starting pitcher
Brandon Donovan.
Donovan did not appear to let the
rough first inning in his first start as
a Highlander get to him. The redshirt
sophomore pitched three full innings
of work and only surrendered one walk
and hit one batter while also adding a
strikeout to his stat line for the night.
The Highlanders were able to get
some offense going by getting two men
on base in the bottom of the second
inning. Andrew Szamski knocked a
single into the gap. Matt Roth came up
to bat after a strikeout from freshman
catcher Garrett Matheny. Roth took a
pitch, and Szamski got his legs churning
towards second base but was thrown
out by the catcher. Roth was eventually
walked in the at-bat.
Donovan eventually got the hook
after the third and redshirt freshman
right-hander Grayson Lamb entered the
game in relief and got out to a mixed
start walking the first batter he faced
in Riley Smith before striking out C.J.
Brown. App. St. senior Conner Leonard
stepped into the batter’s box, and Smith
was given the sign to steal second and
fly to score another run before Alex
Leshock hit a single to score another
run before the inning finally came to an
end.
The Highlanders would get a
glimmer of hope in the bottom of the
4th inning. The Highlanders were
making contact with many pitches
to start the inning with sophomore
Richard De La Cruz grounding out to the
shortstop and Garett Matheny hitting a
long fly out. Matt Roth stepped up and
hit a bomb over the fence in left-center
to bring the Highlanders back into the
game.
The Highlanders brought in their
second pitcher in the evening from
the bullpen in an attempt to limit any
further damage from the Mountaineer
bats, this time it being freshman Cody
Boone. Boone pitched two solid innings,
only allowing one hit and no runs while
also notching up two strikeouts.
The Highlanders would continue
to battle to get back into the game but
were held in check by excellent pitching
performances from the Appalachian
State pitching staff. Mountaineers
starter Brandon Boone put in a
significant shift, only allowing one run
and pitching six full innings on the
afternoon.
The Highlanders registered one more
hit than the Mountaineers with eight
for the game but just couldn’t translate
that into runs that afternoon. The
Highlanders next game is on April 11 in
Charlottesville where they will take on
the University of Virginia.

Radford’s Comeback Falls Short
Against Out of Conference Foe

A
fter losing to Appalachian State
University the day before, Radford’s
baseball team came into this game
losing five in a row at home. Desperate for
a win, Eastern Tennessee State came into
the game with a 14-10 record after losing
three games in a row to Mercer University.
After fouling out the first batter and
walking the second, freshman pitcher
Ryan Bywaters made his first mistake.
Redshirt junior shortstop Chris Cook
cracked a curveball out the park to score
himself and freshman Ben Jackson.
With a 2-0 lead in the first inning,
ETSU sent out redshirt junior Daniel
Sweeney to start the game. He faced
redshirt junior Kyle Butler. He threw two
strikes back to back, and his third pitch
left Butler looking.
