Subject: Science and Art Grade Level: 1st

Time Estimate: 20-25 minutes

Unit: Matter and Energy/Creative Expression Topic: Color

Goal(s): TLW with know the changes that can happen to a state of matter and use
inventive ideas to create a art piece.

Objective(s): TLW identify change in material with melting ice and invent imagines using
colors.

TEKS:
Science
(5) Matter and energy. The student knows that objects have properties and
patterns. The student is expected to:
(B) predict and identify changes in materials caused by heating and
cooling such as ice melting, water freezing, and water evaporating.
Art

(2) Creative expression. The student communicates ideas through original

artworks using a variety of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses
thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging the imagination, fostering
reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem-
solving skills. The student is expected to:

(A) invent images that combine a variety of lines, shapes, colors, textures,
and forms;

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
 Ice cube tray
 Food coloring
 Crayons
 White paper
 plates

Instructional Procedures for Students

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

 In the morning we will mix water with food coloring. Students will be in pairs.
 Ask the students to predict (draw) and write down what they think the ice cube
would like after it melts.
 Let students mix the ingredients.
 Put the ice cube tray in the freezer.
 Explain that water is a liquid matter but can be switch to a different state of matter
it goes through a process.
 Once the ice cubes have been frozen we will remove them and have them melt in
a plate, students will observe how the colors are spreading on the plate.
 Students will then record what they are observing they will draw their
observations and compare it with the first drawing they made.
 Students will be able to get up and walk around to observe their peers work and
drawings.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
Students will have to draw samples of the ice cubes I make and name me other liquid
forms that can be used to complete this project.
