Professional nursing meeting experience (4 hours)

Guide for Reflection Using Tanner’s (2006) Clinical Judgment Model
Introduction

What professional nursing meeting(s) did you attend and where was it located?
On February 15, 2018 I attended Critical Care update which was held in the St. Mary’s auditorium.
Background

Describe the purpose of this professional nursing meeting? Describe the agendas of the group and subgroup. What
type of issues did they address?

The purpose of the meeting entail education update regarding antibiotic stewardship, management of drains,
necrotizing fasciitis and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Management of drains consisted of educating nurses on
closed and open drains, protocol of drain removal and concerning drainage consistency. Antibiotic stewardship was
led by a pharmacist, who highlighted the overuse of antibiotics reinforce the protocol of culture collection and
establishment of superinfections due to not deescalating antibiotic management. Necrotizing fasciitis lecture
highlighted the presentation and misdiagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis and key elements untie to treat individuals such
as surgery and wound management. The ARDS presentation emphasized the importance of decreasing sedation of
critical care patients and highlighted the long-term effects and benefits of sedation medication.

Noticing

What did you notice about the professional nursing meeting initially? Describe what you saw, heard and did during
the meeting?

I notice the professional meeting was presented by power points and were led in lecture from and closed with
question and answer period. I heard profound information that highlighted medical interventions impacting the
outcome of patients. During the meeting many nurses had questions regarding patient specific interventions and
ways to enforce progression regarding patient outcome.

Interpreting

Describe what you thought about the information being discussed. Have you been involved in similar discussion
during your previous student nurse experiences? Describe the similarities and/or differences to those encounters.

The information delivered during the presentation consist of building on foundational knowledge learned with our
medical surgical lectures. This conversation was new to me and opened a door to learning and developing new
theories on specific ailments. As a student this conversation was in depth but displayed key elements incorporated
within the critical care setting.

Responding

Describe stresses (both positive & negative) you experienced as you responded to the new learning or the challenge.

There were no negatives noted within the critical care meeting, the opportunity was great to sit in to learn and be
exposed to new stuff.

There were positives such as the new information regarding antibiotic stewardship, drain management and
necrotizing fasciitis.

Reflection-in-Action

What role would you take being assigned to represent your unit in this group? What subcommittee would you like to
participate with and why?

My role in the meeting was a student and observer. The meeting allowed for continue education credits for nursing
and health care staff. If I was to choose what subcommittee, I would be interested in nursing educational council.
They create several opportunities to learn new content imperative for career growth.

Reflection-on-Action and Clinical Learning

What written evidence is available to support professional nursing groups and their impact on the development of
evidence-based practice and improved patient outcomes. Cite/reference all journal articles that contributed to the
evidence.
The American Nurse Association highly supports the patient outcomes, and this is highlighted within the standard of
practice act. Within the standard practice acts the organization emphasis the collaboration of healthcare professional,
educational expertise and the analyzation of research data furthermore benefits long term goal for our patients
(ANA, 2016).
What is the value of professional nursing meetings both as a part of a healthcare system and within a professional
organization?
Professional meetings are essential in development in the health care professionals that make up the healthcare
systems. Within professional meetings members of the health care system can collaborate and coordinate on changes
for future development. Professional meetings within organizations create a huge value for all active members
within the organizations, creates the opportunity for feedback, expansion and clarification for future goals or
