Department of Design
Aalto University School of Arts,
Design and Architecture The year 2017 Product Architecture Design master
module was done in collaboration with the program

Engineering and with Meyer Yards Turku.

As shipbuilding is once again booming in Finland and

Aalto University School of Arts, to as far in to the future as possible. The negative and
Design and Architecture positive sides of growing seafare and related tourism
were highlighted through lectures and excursions,
pekka.murto@aalto.fi while a visit to Meyer Yards in Turku well showed the
scale of the business and the vessels of today.

Still, the students’ surprised the tutors and

collaborators with broad and socially and
environmentally responsible concepts. Product
architecture design was effectively applied to the
concepts, making them also feasible to realise in
business. Serious discussions were held around issues
like can refugee rescue vessels be included into the
realm of cruises as the volumes seem to be growing
year by year, or can retired cruise ships be utilised for
permanent floating suburbs, or can ships once again
be build out of wood.

We hope we have managed to open new directions of

thinking with our concept work and naturally hope to
continue the collaboration.

Thank you Jani Romanoff from the Naval Architecture

program, designers Sami Mäkinen, Hesamedin
Pakbeen and Anton Annala from Meyer Yards Turku
for your guidance and support, and thank you students
for interesting moments and great work!

CONTEXT
In a world where cruising is
trivialized, adventurous people
are looking for more spectacular
experiences. Our planet has a
world of unexplored oceans.
Requisite technologies have been
there for decades, but underwater
experiences are yet to be
commercialised succesfully.
