1. Compare the capillary porosities of OPC and a PPC produced with same OPC 70% and
30% Fly ash at certain age with water to cement ratio 0.5 for both OPC and PPC. Assume
specific gravity of cement as 3.15 and that for Fly ash is 2.2. The OPC has 48% C3S and
25% C2S and also other compounds. Fly ash contains 55% SiO2. At the concerned age the
degree of hydration of OPC is about 40% on an average assuming both C3S and C2S etc.
have reacted similarly. Consider 100 gm of cement and draw schematic diagrams to
illustrate volume conservation and relative mass and volume of the reactant and products.
Assume 100 gm of SiO2 reacts with 185 gm of CH with C-S-H as only product in
pozzolana reaction, and the lime produced and silica can react immediately depending
upon availability? 10
2. Two similar aggregates with size ratio of coarser aggregate to finer aggregate being 16
were mixed together and packed in a standard manner to obtain maximum packing density.
The maximum packing density was obtained at 70% of the coarse aggregate with rest being
fine aggregate. Assume that this optimal proportion is not affected by particle interference.
It was also observed that the void ratio of coarser aggregate reduced by 25% when 10 %
finer aggregates were present in the overall blend with 90 % coarser aggregate. What are
the individual void ratios of coarser and the finer aggregates? 5
3
3. A concrete having 180 kg of water and 360 kg of cement per m of concrete is now to be
produced with 2% SNF admixture, which can reduce the water content by about 10% for
each 1 % addition of HRWRA with the cement retaining same flow characteristics. How
much will be the cement saving in kg, if a raft foundation of size 25×25×1 m3 is to be cast
by using SNF as admixture, so that both flow characteristic and strength remains
unaffected by addition of 2 % SNF? 5

1. State the reactions of C3S and C3A with water. Given that specific Portland pozzolana
cement under consideration contains 75% OPC and 25% Fly ash. The OPC has 49% C3S
and 23% C2S and also other compounds. Fly ash contains 55% SiO2. At certain age about
40% and 15% of C3S and C2S respectively have reacted. How much lime as percentage of
the total cement mass would have liberated at that stage? Assume 100 gm of SiO2 reacts
with 185 gms of CH with C-S-H as only product in pozzolanic reaction, how much
quantity of S by percentage mass of total cement would have been consumed at that time.
What is the percentage of unreacted silica remaining in the system, expressed as percent
by mass of fly ash? 6
2. Calculate Capillary porosity, gel porosity and total porosity for water to cement ratio of
0.4 when it has attained at 80% degree of hydration. 4
3. What are the major difference of PPC and PSC with OPC? 5
4. Define, volume diameter, surface diameter, specific surface diameter and sphericity factor
for aggregate particle. Calculate the angularity factor for sphere and cube. Through a graph
demonstrate the relationship between shape of aggregate and the void content. 5
