1: (I Salute) Sri Gajananam ( Who is having an Elephant Face ), Who is Served by the
Bhuta Ganas (Celestial Attendants or Followers) and Others,
2: Who Eats the Core of Kapittha (Wood Apple) and Jambu (Rose Apple) Fruits,
3: Who is the Son of Devi Uma (Devi Parvati) and the Cause of Destruction of Sorrows,

Alternate Meaning:
O Lord, who is wearing White colored clothes, Who is all pervading, who has four hands
Who has a peaceful, joyous face we meditate on you, remove all the obstacles.

Meaning: I meditate upon the Lord Ganesha who is clad in white garment (dhoti), who is
pervading, who is as bright colored as Moon, who has a smiling face, having four shoulders
(or hands), and who is the remover of obstacles.

Modaka in His Hand,

3: Who is Short in Stature and is the Son of Sri Maheswara (Lord Shiva),
4: Prostrations at the Feet of Sri Vighna Vinayaka, the Remover of the Obstacles of His
Devotees.

Hanuman
This is one of the simplest slokAs you will come across with a very simple meaning.
वववववव (buddhi) - intelligence, वववव (balam) - strength, ववव (yash) - fame,
ववववववव (dhairyam) - courage, ववववववववववव (nirbhayatvam) -
fearlessness, वववववववव (arogatAm) - disease-free health, वववववववव (ajADyam) -
determination, वववव वववववववव व (vAk paTutvam ca) - and articulateness of speech,
will all last forever (ववववव, bhavet) if you meditate (वववववववव , smaraNAt) on Lord
Hanuman (वववववव, hanumat) at all times.
The quality that stands out for me whenever I recite any Hanuman slokAs or read stories
about him is his humility. Despite his immense strength and courage, he embraces the role
of a humble servant at all times. In one of the innumerable stories about him, he was
offered the chance to give up mortal life for good. However, he turned that offer down
since he wanted to live on forever here on Earth all the while meditating on his dear Lord
Rama. He did not want the pleasures of the other worlds to distract him. Such is his faith,
chastity and spirit of bhakti.

1-1. vAk= shabda= sound - what is or may be heard; artha= its meaning, import; iva= like;
sa.mpR^iktau= nitya sambandha= indissolubly cleaved together, ever embodied two-in-
one entity pArvatI-parameshvara; vAk= of speech, idiom; artha= its meaning - import, the
process of forming and relating ideas from listened sound; pratipattaye= samyak j~nAna
artham= to derive pertinent idiom and ideation, language and paralanguage; jagataH= of
universe; pitarau= parents; vande= I adore; pArvatI= pArvati; parama Ishvarau= supreme,
lord - shiva.
To derive the pertinent idiom and its ideation I adore the Parents of Universe, pArvati -
parameshvara, who are indissolubly cleaved together like sound and sense
An epic always bases itself on ideas, idioms, and their ideation. Though Goddess saraswati
is the presiding deity of words, speech etc. the poet is reverently praying Shiva and [Arvati
for more choice for pertinent words and their perfect meaning, as the poet kAlidAsa is a
deemed goddess saraswati in male form pumbhAva saraswati... And according to the
tenets of vAyu purANa, shiva and pArvati are the deities for according exemplary
meanings/words. shabdajAtam asheSantu dhatte sharvasya vallabhA | artha rUpam
yadakhilam dhatte mugdhendndu shekharaH ||; shiva shaktayoH vishiSTa shabda artha
adhi devatAH;
The translation used here for Sanskrit poetics is not precise. If elaborate accounts are
wanted, the works of AcArya Sushil Kumar De and others may please be consulted.
However, only main outlines are given here for a birds eye view of poetics.

The essence of the first part of the Sloka is that the Guru is verily the representative of
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He creates, sustains knowledge and destroys the weeds of
ignorance. I bow before Him (tasmai) and salute such a Guru.
The second part of the Sloka is a bit more loaded. Hey Guru, the teacher of this entire
universe (sarvalokanAm), One who heals (bhishaj) all worldly (bhava) diseases (rogiNAm),
the store-house (nidhaye) of all knowledge (sarva vidhyAnAm), I salute you Lord
Dakshinamurti.
