Passage
“Needless to say, the students don’t have a uniform response, and I use such comments to foster
discussion. When necessary or appropriate, I also interject questions that might help the students
deepen or reconsider their views. I also try to draw connections between such problems and
conflicts that I witness daily in the class. When a students talks about a killing over a mundane
argument or a piece of clothing, for instance, I ask how these differ from the conflicts in our
school and on our playground, and how we might solve them.
