“Needless to say, the students don’t have a uniform response, and I use such comments to foster
discussion. When necessary or appropriate, I also interject questions that might help the students
deepen or reconsider their views. I also try to draw connections between such problems and
conflicts that I witness daily in the class. When a students talks about a killing over a mundane
argument or a piece of clothing, for instance, I ask how these differ from the conflicts in our
school and on our playground, and how we might solve them.

Focusing on problems in writing and discussion acknowledges the seriousness of a child’s


problem; it also fosters community because the students recognize that we share common
concerns. Ultimately, it can help students to re-examine some of their own attitudes that may in
