Moorings Turnaround at Port Lincoln

Recovery

Monday 15th May 2006

Departed from Port Lincoln on the vessel Discovery Bay at approx 8:00 am. Wind 10-
15kts from NE with sloppy seas.

Arrived at Mooring 5 at approx 09:30 am, mooring would not release initially several
attempts were required. Mooring on board at 10:15 am.
There was significant fouling on the instruments and release mechanism.

Mooring 4 was found to be approx 1.3 kms from the nominated position. The mooring
position for the last 3 months was 34 38.137S 136 05.890E.

The sensors were covered in slime.

External Battery = 12.3 volts..

Maintenance Work

The poison plugs were replaced on the SBE37’s for moorings 1&2.

Moorings were dismantled and initially cleaned with a water blaster.

Seabirds were dismantled, tubing and sensors cleaned and re-assembled.
Sacrificial anodes were replaced and all surfaces re coated with antifouling paint.

Mooring 4 SBE#4537 had damaged cables replaced. Batteries were replaced light and
fluorometer sensors were checked.
Release #30448 was tested.

Mooring 5 SBE#4533, found faulty Fluorometer cable connector. This was unable to be
repaired and the sensor was removed.
Release #30446 was tested.

Mooring1 was recovered, serviced and deployed from the Discovery Bay.
Mooring deployed approx 17:40 18/5/2006.

The seabird SM37 was given back to SARDI for re-deployment on the eastern side of the
gulf.
