CREATE, LABEL, AND ILLUSTRATE THE BRAIN

PURPOSE OF ACTIVITY: At the end of this activity, the student will be familiar with
the specific lobes of the brain, as well as the brainstem and cerebellum. They will know the
functions or activities that occur or are regulated by the individual lobes of the brain, as well as
the brainstem and cerebellum.

INSTRUCTIONS TO TEACHER:

Each student will need a piece of paper large enough (at least 8-1/2 x 11) to demonstrate the
lobes of the brain, as well as draw the required number of functions listed below in #3.
Students should use different colors to outline the lobes so that it will be obvious where the
lobes begin and end. The student will need at least six different colors of pencils, markers, or
crayons for this activity. For clarity, you may require students to label each picture they draw
in each lobe. Resource 1 is the basic structure of the brain including the brainstem and
cerebellum. Resource 2 is a list of the functions that occur in each lobe of the brain and also
includes the functions of the brainstem and cerebellum.
INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:

1. Draw the outline of the brain including the brain stem and cerebellum.

2. Outline each of the four lobes lightly with different colors and label each of these lobes.
When labeling, make sure your label is small enough to leave room for pictures you will need
to draw in each lobe.

3. Draw a picture that, in your opinion, that best illustrates the functions that occur in the
lobes as follows:

a. Frontal lobe: Draw pictures that represent at least SIX functions that are
performed or regulated by the parietal lobe.
b. Parietal lobe: Draw pictures that represent at least FIVE functions that are
performed or regulated by the parietal lobe.
c. Occipital lobe: Draw pictures that represent at least TWO functions that are
performed or regulated by the occipital lobe.
d. Temporal lobe: Draw pictures that represent at least FIVE functions that are
performed or regulated in the occipital lobe.

4. Draw a picture in the brainstem that represents at least one function that it performs or
regulates.

5. Draw a picture in the cerebellum that represents at least one function that it performs or
regulates.

Brainstem: It also regulates the central nervous system, and is pivotal in maintaining
consciousness and regulating the sleep cycle. The brain stem has many basic functions
including heart rate, breathing, sleeping and eating.

Cerebellum: It is most commonly known for its regulation of coordination and balance;
however, it also known to be involved in cognitive functions such as attention and
language, and in regulating fear and pleasure responses.
