Scenario:

The learner will be given the opportunity to research and write a report that gives fundamental
information, data and knowledge on key live sound areas. The student should be able to increase their
understanding of live sound equipment and the choices behind gear selection.

Tasks
Specify a list of live sound equipment appropriate to resource a small venue.
Under the following topics discus various set-ups & specifications of your selected equipment:

 Loudspeakers & Amplifiers: specification, e.g. power rating, impedance, sensitivity,

directivity; placement, e.g. coverage, main system, fills, monitors. (C2.1)

 Mixing & processing equipment: front of house and monitor mixing console, e.g. metering,
gain staging, panning, routing, auxiliary channels, pre-fade listen (PFL); dynamic processors,
e.g. effects units, equalisers, feedback eliminators; playback equipment; crossovers. (C2.2)

 Microphones & DI Boxes: types; frequency response; sensitivity; placement. (C2.3)

 Cables & connectors: e.g. balanced versus unbalanced cables, mains cables and connectors,
speaker cables, multi-core cables, stage-box; safe cabling and installation. (C2.4)

The completed report must be:

• Word-processed
• Clearly labeled with student name, unit and course title
• Contain an index sheet (with relevant document pagination)
• Printed one-side per page only • Spiral bound
• Use Harvard referencing

D. While length is not set, probably c.2000 words would be sufficient to cover the topics properly.
Clearly label each section 1.1, 1.2 etc

In this assignment I will devise a list of live sound equipment that would be
appropriate to resource a small venue. What the venue intents to be used for can
make a massive difference to what equipment needs to go into the venue.
Theoretically, the venue will be a small drinks venue, with a set up for
background music, and live small music. The live music will be small acoustic
bands, solo acoustic and vocal performances or open mic nights. The room I will
be using for this will be the recital room within the college. I will lay out the
loudspeakers and amplifiers that will be needed, any mixing or processing
equipment, important cables and connectors and microphones that may be
required in the venue.

The front of house system in this venue will not need to be a very large system.
For this I will be going with 2 Logic Systems Pro Audio IS12 350W loudspeaker
cabinets. These will be placed either side of the small stage in the venue, facing
out towards where the people would be within the venue.
