Preparation,  materials  and  equipment  
 
1.   For  this  activity,  you  will  need  a  short  animation  from  filmmaker  PES  
called  Western  Spaghetti.  To  access  the  video  on  YouTube,  click  on  the

2.   Make  a  copy  of  the  Mystery  Recipe  worksheet  (page  5)  for  each  student.  
 
 
  Decide  how  you  are  going  to  display  the  clip  in  class.  Possibilities  include:  
   
  • Laptop  or  desktop  (good  for  small  groups)  
  • Computer,  projector  +  screen  
  • iPhone  or  other  mobile  device  (good  for  one-­‐to-­‐ones/intimate  
  classes)  
   
  Don’t  forget  the  loudspeakers    
 
 
 
 
 
Lesson  plan  
 
1.   Tell  students  that  you  have  a  recipe  for  them.  Give  out  copies  of  the  
worksheet  (Mystery  recipe).  
 
2.   Ask  your  students  if  they  can  tell  what  is  missing  from  the  recipe  (answer  
=  the  ingredients).  
 
3.   Tell  students  that  you  want  them  to  guess/work  out  what  the  missing  
ingredients  are.  This  could  be  done  in  pairs  or  small  groups.  
 
 
Make  sure  students  understand  that:  
 
• Ingredient  (1)  appears  in  the  recipe  five  times  and  ingredient  (3)  
appears  twice.  
• In  some  cases,  students  will  have  to  write  more  than  a  single  word  
in  the  spaces  provided  on  the  worksheet.
