Teaching children phonics in early childhood which is knowing the sounds of

the letters will engage and enhance their abilities in reading and spelling the words.

Using phonics to teach children is the useful way which can attach their

understanding of the letters, and it improves their abilities in learning letters. Also,

there are two approaches used for teaching phonics are Synthetic phonic instructions

and Analytic phonics instruction.

Synthetic phonics instruction is a technique to teach children phonemes which is

about teaching children when they must break up the words into smallest units of

sounds or individual sounds and then mix all the way through the word. For example,

the word "Cat" the child will break it up into "c/a/at" and when he blends them the

word will be "Cat."

Analytic phonics instruction is a method to teach children to look first at the whole

word and then break it down to compare parts of the word to letter-sound relationships

between them and the words that they know. In this technique, children are taught to

resolve the words to discover the spelling patterns and then and divide them. For

example, the child knows ‘goat,' ‘boat' and ‘float,' then the word ‘moat' will be easy to

read, even if it is the first time he sees it.

In my opinion, I prefer to use the Synthetic phonics instruction which I found it easiest

than the Analytic phonics instruction, and it helps the children to learn the letters and

the sounds step by step rather than the whole word. Moreover, it enhances their

abilities, and they will improve their skills in spelling the words by breaking up the
words into small letters. This method will help the students who have problems and

spelling the words or letters, and it is helpful to gain the knowledge of the letters and

the sounds. The emergent literacy is defended as the essential step to learn the skills

of reading and writing in the early years, and it usually begins when they attend the

school. Moreover, emergent literacy includes aspects such as oral language which is

speaking and listening, understanding the basic alphabet knowledge and early

phonological awareness.

- Multiliteracy: Is the way language is constructed and how meanings change across

different cultural or social contexts. Moreover, commonly to gain the understanding

and multimodal knowledge representations. The written forms join with auditory,

spatial, visual, oral and tactile representations to produce meaning. There are four

competencies which are: visual literacy, textual literacy, digital literacy and

technological literacy.

- Visual literacy: Using the images to understand the knowledge.

- Textual literacy: Using the text to read and understand through using multi of

sources such as; articles and documents. It helps in reflecting the knowledge through

the written means.

- Digital literacy: Collecting and gathering the information from digital mediums such

as the online sources.Or another defention which is; Improving reading and writing

skills through using websites, programs to improve and develop their learning.

- Technological literacy: Use the technology to create, communicate and learn.

(prometheanworld, 2017)
The benefit and importance of multiple literacies:

Most of the children need to develop their multiple literacies to be able and more flexible

to learn through diversifying learning resources which will affect positively on their

skills, and that will improve their knowledge

Using the digital literacy in teaching children in early childhood can be useful for a

particular aspect which can improve, develop the children skills and allowed them to be

creative and give the opportunities to discover and gain the knowledge through using the

digital literacy. According to the researchers, they believe that:" Digital literacy should be

the fourth pillar of a child's education alongside reading, writing, and mathematics and be

resourced and taught accordingly" (House of Lords Report, 2017). Children by using the

digital literacy to learn the reading and writing skills will

Children usually like to pretend or act. They also pretend or act writing and reading then

they start reading and writing in real, and they use the books to read the text which is

called emergent literacy knowledge. Emergent literacy is the essential and the

developmental step to teach children reading and writing. Moreover, the children who

have achieved the emergent literacy has, phonological awareness, oral language skills,

print awareness and letter awareness.

Emergent literacy:

There are multi skills and knowledge for emergent literacy that will let the children to

rich the emergent literacy which is: Print Motivation, Vocabulary, Print awareness,

Narrative skills, Letter awareness, Phonological awareness.

- Print motivation: In this step, children enjoy and fell interest with the print materials

such as the books, and they start pretending reading and writing before they start reading

and writing in real.

- Vocabulary: Vocabulary development is identified as a child ability to know the names

of the things, and it is an essential sign of a child's overall academic achievement.

- Print awareness: During this step, children will know the critical stages or points in

reading a book such as, how to handle the book, realize the differences between letters

and words, understand who the text organized and realizing that reading is completed

from the top of the page to the bottom of the page and left to right.

- Narrative skills: narrative skill is essential, and it is the literacy step when children can

improve their abilities to tell a story and describe a sequence of events according to the

story that they read.

- Letter awareness: In letter awareness, the child will start understanding the difference

between the letters and he will begin to recognize the sound of each letter.

- Phonological awareness: In this step, the child will understand the words are made up

of many different sounds and by stringing these sounds we will make words that have

meaning.

(Blake, 2017)
Children learn faster when they are with adults who can advise and show them other

sources to learn and the most important persons are the parents and the teachers. The

parents can use many ways and methods to teach their children in the home and support

their children's development and well-being. Such as, using website and online teaching

games that will enhance their learning abilities through using the digital literacy. Besides,

they can encourage them to read their favorite books and link what they love with

learning. For example, if a child like animals the parents can give him a story about the

animals or open to them an online game that teaches the animals names and the first

letters in their names.

ADEC Curriculum:

The Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) have

affirmed that uniting the educational system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It focuses on

developing the student's skills by providing lessons and events and encourage the parents

to participate and be involved with their children and follow up their developments.

Digital literacy programs:

(First program):

- The title of the program: https://www.kizphonics.com/

- Age-targeted: From 3 to 6 years.

- Links to ADEC curriculum: Recognize that spoken words are represented in written

language by specific sequences of letters.

- The usefulness of the program: This website teaches phonics, sight words, reading,

the alphabet, letters and provided with multi of lessons plans that are useful for the

children and teacher. Besides, parents can access the website online and teach their kids

the phonics through the games.

(Second program):
- The title of the program: https://www.kizphonics.com

- Age-targeted: From 3 to 6 years.

- Links to ADEC curriculum: With guidance and support from adults, respond to

questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.

- The usefulness of the program: This website teaches phonics, writing and it is

provided with lessons that support learning phonics reading and writing. Also, it is easy

to access, and parents can use it for their children to practice.

Applying the digital literacy in schools will enhance the children knowledge, and that

will engorge them to learn and to diversify learning resources which helps to rich the

emergent literacy. However, the teacher and parents must be careful not over to use the

digital literacy to avoid the negative results such as; spending all the time on the internet.
