Timing Activity

9:30am Warmup: Journal (5 minutes)

Before bell:
Journal prompt is projected onto board:
« Quel type de la médicine non-traditionnelle aimerais-tu essayer ? Pourquoi? »

While students enter:

Students get their journal from the bin and sit in their assigned seat to begin writing.

Bell rings/Class begins: 9:30

While students are writing, I take attendance, and then circulate the room. Students
often ask how to say certain words in French when writing, so I make sure I am
available.

Speaking in Pairs: 9:34

I give a warning to students to complete their thoughts in their journal and begin
sharing what they wrote with someone near them.

Bonjour, classe!

Hello class! How are you? You have one minute, so try to complete your thoughts and
speak with someone about your writing.

Sharing with Class: 9:38

I ask if any students would like to share with the class what they wrote about, or what
they found interesting that their partner wrote about. Students volunteer, and I
acknowledge and affirm their responses.

Is there anyone who would like to share with the class? What did you find interesting?

Communication 1.2.A.L.a: Demonstrate understanding of oral classroom

language in the target language on a variety of familiar and unfamiliar topics.
Students demonstrate understanding through speaking with their partners, sharing
with the class, and responding to my questions.
Transition Put away journal and pay attention
(30 seconds) Ok, rangez ça, s’il vous plait, on va discuter l'activité d’aujourd’hui
Ok, put that away, please, we’re going to discuss today’s activity
9:40am Cooperative Learning Activity Instructions and Grouping (5 minutes)

Background:
Students were told to bring all unit materials to class today, and that we would be
using these notes for an in-class activity that would result in a grade.

Instructions:
I display the directions on the board in English, but I explain the directions in French.

You will be divided into assigned groups of 3-4 people. I have created a Google Doc for
each group which I have shared with you. This Google Doc has 3-4 different
categories; decide in your groups who is doing which category. You will research this
subject using class notes and the resources I have provided. You will record your
research on the Google Doc. To help in your research process, I have included
questions for your particular topic, you MUST answer these to receive full
participation points

You will have 20 minutes to research your topic; in this time, you are to become an
‘expert’ in your subject. After the 20 minutes, you will be sharing what you have
learned with your group in FRENCH. You will have 10 minutes for each member to
share with the group. ALL writing and speaking MUST be in FRENCH!

Grouping: (displayed AFTER instructions)

The class of 20 students will be divided into 6 groups: 4 groups of 3 and 2 groups of 4.
I have already assigned students to their groups according to skill levels, to create
balance among ‘teams.’ Students of various levels are grouped together intentionally
with the hope that they will help one another. Also, I was careful to not put students
in groups with friends who distract them. I do not display the groups until AFTER I go
through the instructions

There is one group for each of the following topics:

France: 3 members
USA: 3 members
Quebec: 3 members
Guinea: 3 members
Alternative Medicine: 4 members
Conventional Medicine: 4 members

Transition Students get into assigned groups

9:45am Ok, allez! Trouvez votre groupe.
(2 minutes) Ok, go! Find your group
9:47am Cooperative Learning Activity: Assign roles

Steps are projected on board so students can govern themselves.

Step 1: Assign roles (3 minutes)
Each student is responsible for researching a subject, using both notes from class and
any resources I provide. Students will use a Google Doc, which I have set up according
to their groups, to record notes for their specific topic. The Google Doc also provides
instructions and the format students are to use, including questions and prompts they
must fill out.

For each country, students will assign themselves to one of the following:
(3 members)
 Illness
 Treatment
 Healthcare

For each medicine, students will assign themselves to one of the following: (4
members)

 Alternative medicine:
 Acupuncture
 Naturopathic
 Herbal therapies
 Osteopathic

 Conventional medicine:
 Hospitals/emergency
 Pharmacy
 Anatomy
 Types of specialties

9:50am Cooperative Learning Activity: JIGSAW Part 1 (20 minutes)

Step 2: Research
Students have 20 minutes to research their specific topic and fill in the Google Doc. I
display a timer on the board.

Vous avez vingt minutes ! Commencez à faire des recherches maintenant !

You have twenty minutes! Start your research now!

10:10am Cooperative Learning Activity: JIGSAW Part 2 (10 minutes)

Step 3: Share
Students discuss the specific topic they researched with their group. Students discuss
their topic in detail with the goal of informing all members on the topic so that the
rest of the group also become “experts.”
Communication 1.2.A.L.a: Demonstrate understanding of oral classroom
language in the target language on a variety of familiar and unfamiliar topics.
Students demonstrate understanding through speaking with groups

Connections 3.1.M.a: Acquire new content knowledge about familiar topics

through the target language
While most of this information should be a review, students are learning from one
another in the target language

Cultures 2.1.A.H.b: Compare the governmental system of a country in which the

language is spoken with that of one or more other countries
The Google Doc requires the “doctor” students to compare and contrast the different
types of medicine and health systems between the US, Guinea, and France. Quebec is left
out because it is so similar to the US aside from healthcare.

10:20am Cooperative Learning Activity: JIGSAW Part 3 (6 minutes)

Step 4: “Doctors” join the countries

The students that are in the country groups stay where they are, and the students
from the medicine groups split up. I have the students in each medicine group count
off 1-4, and assign France as 1, Guinea as 2, Quebec as 3, and the US as 4. The
medicine students find their countries, and now each country has one ‘representative’
from conventional, and one from alternative.

The country groups listen as the “doctors” share what they learned both
independently and in their group. Each doctor also has a Google doc that they will
soon be sharing with their new country.

Communication 1.2.A.L.a: Demonstrate understanding of oral classroom

Students demonstrate understanding through speaking with groups

Connections 3.1.M.a: Acquire new content knowledge about familiar topics

through the target language
While most of this information should be a review, students are learning from one
another in the target language
10:26 am Exit Ticket

As I walk around listening to students discuss, I pass out the exit tickets. These are
meant to be worked on as groups or individually, depending on how confident the
student feels about the material from class. The exit tickets cover the 5 key points
from the Jigsaw activity:
1. Treatment
2. Illness
3. Healthcare
4. Conventional medicine
5. Alternative medicine

These are turned in before students leave.

10:30am Bell Rings: Class is dimissed
Au revoir! Bonne journée !
Good bye ! Have a good day!
