ECV4603 – TRAFFIC SAFETY & MANAGEMENT

Group Assignment (10%) Second Semester Year 2017/2018 3 Weeks

Requirements:

Student tasks include a team work in conducting desk diagnosis of accident blackspots, proposing
appropriate road engineering countermeasures for the identified accident problems, preparing
conceptual design of countermeasures, and presenting the final work.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Background:

The Government of Malaysia has appointed your company to carry out the Accident Blackspot
Investigation. This project entails detailed Accident Investigation and Countermeasures of 150
identified Blackspot (of 1 km section) along major Federal Roads in the country.

The Blackspot to be investigated lies along the Federal Route FR0023, Section No. 3 & 4 in the
vicinity of Muar, Johor Darul Takzim. This location (Section 3 & 4) has been identified as one of
the worst Blackspot in Malaysia under the Blackspot Treatment Program, Ministry of Works,
Malaysia.

The location passes through a medium built up area with development on both sides of the road
particularly in the vicinity of Bandar Muar. The flow at this location is quite heavy, counted to be
50,550 vehicles per day and traffic growth is estimated at 2% a year. The traffic compositions are
about 45% motorcycles and 10% heavy vehicles (HPU Traffic Section). The existing road is a
two lane single carriageway road without a physical divider. Road width is about 12 metres all
along Section No. 3 & 4.

Instructions:

a) Students will be divided into 6 Groups (6-7 member per group). Each group will be given
18 Accident Forms (POL.27) and an AutoCAD drawing (not-to-scale) of the Accident
Blackspot Sections. Each group is expected to:

i) Produce collision diagrams of the accident based on the accident forms provided.
ii) Identify the blackspots and conduct desk accident diagnosis for each identified
black-spots.
iii) Prepare conceptual design of proposed engineering countermeasures.
iv) Present the proposed countermeasures on powerpoint.

b) The three (3) major questions encompassing this assignment include:

i) How many accident blackspots are identified in this package?

ii) Are the dominant accident patterns clearly identified?
ii) Are the proposed countermeasures reasonable, practicable and justifiable?

c) Each group is required to give a 30-minute powerpoint presentation on their respective

accident diagnosis and proposed countermeasure. The emphasis should be on clarity and
simplicity of presentation together with justification of their proposals.

d) Ensure that the names and matric number of group members are listed on the first slide of
the powerpoint presentation.
