Part A:

Name of Article: Teacher Talk in General and Special Education Elementary Classrooms
Author: Alexandra Hollo and Joseph H. Wehby
Journal Name: The Elementary School Journal
Date of Article: 05/01/2017

This journal article focuses on the impact classroom discourse has on student response. Teacher
talk, according to the authors, has been grouped into the four constructs of quantity, complexity,
content, and clarity. They provide a handful of information from recent studies and research
from multiple different professionals; It even goes so far as to show the research method for
their own experiment. For their experiment, they assessed teachers’ language samples based on
the four constructs and related them to student measures. The results showed that teacher talk
has a definite effect on the comprehension rate of students in an academic setting. Overall,
communication from teachers to students must be clear to produce successful results in the
classroom.
Part B:

Title of Article: Does goal setting with elementary students impact reading growth
Author: Ronnie A. Dotson
Year: 2016

Administrators and teachers have been searching for ways to raise student academic
achievements. Dotson analyzes the two types of goals used by teachers, which are general and
measurable. The difference between the two is that the latter has much more potential to
increase student performance by creating a tangible goal. Although students are responsible for
creating the goal, the teachers’ role in providing feedback and monitoring is necessary. Goal
setting is essentially deemed as continuous self-evaluation; It is a very individualistic process
that needs to be frequently assessed. The research from Dotson and many other sources shows
that goal setting provides the tools to produce the academic achievements sought after by
schools.

Name of Article: The business of ‘the bachelor’; how the franchise has become more relevant
to viewers and advertisers as it nears its 20th season
Author: Jeanine Poggi
Format type: Journal Article
Year: 2015

Surprising to many, the Bachelor franchise is still in full swing even after more than a decade.
During the 2014-15 season, it was able to bring ABC $187.3 million from advertising and has
been fluctuating ever since. According to Poggi, most people do not watch the show as it airs on
television, rather when it replays or is shown online. The Bachelor has many criticisms,
including lack of racial diversity and the legitimate reality of the show, but that has not kept
viewers from watching. The show takes pointers from the audience as to who should go on the
dates or who the main girls should be. A lot of this is found from social media and the show
simply listens to how they respond. ABC has full intentions of keeping the show running for an
indefinite amount of time.
