ASSESSMENTS (How I will know students have achieved the objective(s))
 Are each of the students dressed appropriately for class, with a proper change of clothes and runners? (Formative)
 Are students engaged from the moment they step into the gym?
 Do students understand the instruction? Do they look confused throughout the lesson, if so ask them to put thumb up if
understanding, to the side if needing further explanation and thumb down if not understanding.
 As students are engaged in the activity, I will be walking around to see who is participating with their greatest efforts and
who may need more explanation or motivation.
Prior to the Lesson MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Students will have a basic knowledge of badminton, and will  Badminton nets
already know the fundamental skills  Badminton poles
 Students may not have had very much experience, but basic  Shuttles
skills can be improved during this class period.  Rackets
 Change of Clothes
 Whistle
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Location: Students will enter the gym, and put their backpacks, bags etc. in the changeroom. Depending on
which group goes before this lesson, the badminton nets may or may not be set up.
**Accommodation: If time allows, we will have students set up the nets, and if time does not allow we will
use the badminton net lines and the centerline as the net.
**Variations: Instead of blowing the whistle between each game, when time is up during the round robin
tournament, music can be played throughout the lesson and when the music stops, students move courts
Teacher will: Have students come into the gym and sit in their squads for attendence and explain what is
happening in class today, and have students sit quietly until it is time to start.
Teacher will: Announce that students will begin the lesson by rallying with a partner back and forth over the
net (line) working on forehand and backhand
Warm up- in partners, rally back and fourth for 5 minutes to get warmed up, and then we will move into
specific types of shots, and proceed into game play for the rest of the period.

Schedule:
 Partner rally
 Rules and Regulations
 Clears
 Drives
 Drop shots
 Game play
Badminton Scoring System – 3 (games) x 21 (points)
The 3 (game sets) x 21 (points) scoring system was first introduced in December 2005 and is now the official
scoring system used at professional tournaments. Despite the official updates to the rules, some recreational
players (particularly those who have been playing badminton for many years) still follow the traditional
scoring system.
 A badminton match consists of three games.
 The first player/team to score 21 points wins a game.
 A point is awarded to the player/team that wins the rally.
 In the event that a game reaches a 20-20 score, players can only win the set by getting a 2 point lead
over the opposing party e.g. 22-20, 23-21, 24-22 etc.
 In the event that the game reaches a 29-29 score, the first team to reach 30 points will win the set
and take the service for the next game.
Service
 A serve is delivered diagonally across the courts. During service, both the server and receiver must
stand at diagonally opposite sides without touching the boundary lines of the badminton courts.
During a serve, the point at which the racquet is allowed to come into contact with the shuttlecock
must happen below the server’s waist.
 Coin toss- throw up the birdie into the air and whichever way the head of the birdie is facing, is the
team who serves first.

Body Time
Teacher will: Have students stay at their respective net with their partner and make every student pause
where they are.
Teacher will: Explain we are first going to practice clears, nice high hits to the back of the court, do not put
too much exertion into the clear. Not working on speed, we are working on trajectory- (high and long)
Students will: Focus on clears
(5 mins)
Teacher will: Explain the next skill we are going to focus on are drives- hitting back and fourth, over the net,
standing close on the service line, and the birdie should be at a low trajectory. We are working on exertion
and trajectory with this shot (low across the net, and high exertion and force)
Students will: Focus on drives
(5 mins)
Demonstration: Drop shots- back and fourth continuous- catching and throwing or continuous. (low over the
net, light contact of the birdie.
Students will: Focus on drop shots
(5 mins)
Teacher will: Pause students
Teacher will: Explain we are going to combine the 3 moves now, in a sequence.
-Drive, drop, clear
Students will: Demonstrate combining the 3 moves just taught and practiced.

(5 mins)
GAME PLAY:
- Students will now be given time to play. 2 on 2, the students who are off can wait and will be given
time every 5 minutes to switch.
- Accommodation: Students who are off on the side- if we only have 4 nets, can rally with themselves
focusing on consistency or against the wall.
Closure Time
Teacher will: Announce that there is about 8-10 minutes left of class, it is now time to clean up. I will need
someone to collect the birdies in the bin, hang up your badminton racket, and the nets need to come down
also! Everyone must help, and I will not open the change rooms until everything is put away!
Students will: Help to clean up all equipment and head to change rooms to change out.
Teacher will: Stand by the gym door, to ensure students stay in the gym and to also check to see if anyone
missed on the attendance is accounted for.
